One of the most bitter battles of the current console war, the multiplatform success of Final Fantasy XIII, has ended with a clear winner. The PS3 version of Final Fantasy XIII has sold almost twice as many copies as the 360 version according to the latest NPD numbers. That's pretty conclusive. Final Fantasy XIII, heralded as the very first Final Fantasy game to enjoy a simultaneous launch on home consoles, sold 828,000 PS3 copies compared to 493,000 on the Xbox 360. As you can see, the numbers weren't ... (more)

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2652 days, 15 hours, 37 minutes ago
Saturday, April 17, 2010 7:07:33 PM GMT
A team of Australian researchers recently conducted a study to determine what effect -- if any -- late-night violent gaming sessions have on a young person's sleep cycle. Two groups of teenage boys were either made to play 50 minutes of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare or watch March of the Penguins while lying in bed. The results showed that the group who played Modern Warfare took only a few minutes longer to fall asleep than those watching the movie, causing the researchers to think presleep gaming's ne... Based on NPD figures (via Kotaku), Ubisoft's sequel, Red Steel 2, managed to sell 50,000 copies in its debut month of March -- up until the end of the NPD's catalog period, April 3. Admittedly the game was released at the tail-end of the month on March 23, but we'd still classify the sales as "decent." (more)

Yes, Assassin's Creed 2 has been awarded with a Guinness World Record. You might be surprised, however, to learn that it has nothing to do with how good the game is. No, Assassin's Creed 2 has been awarded the world record for "being the most cover-featured video game." In other words, it appeared on more magazine covers between April 2009 and April 2010 than any other game. (more)

LGJ: Does PS3 Firmware 3.21 come with a refund?

By now you've installed the PS3 Firmware 3.21 update that removes the "Other OS" option (more or less) from your console. (You've at least read about it.) Besides angering the PS3 users who had been enjoying the Other OS feature, this incident has had some unintended consequences in the realm of consumer protection and warranty laws, both in the US and abroad. It's certainly a bit of an unusual situation, but hopefully this column will provide you a bit of an explanation on a global scale, and answer the... (more)

The graphics-intensive Crysis sequel is squeezing a bit more power from Sony's machine, and while it's doubtful that the naked eye will recognize much of a difference, you can be sure that PS3 fans are rejoicing in the streets over this victory. For those savvy to the ways of tech, connecting a game console to the internet is simple, but for others, it can be tricky (or a total nightmare). To help you through these early stages of console ownership, we've prepared a basic rundown of how to get your system online. If you just want to get internet via an ethernet cable, then your setup is going to be pretty painless. Both the PS3 and 360 have ethernet ports, but the Wii does not. Just run the cable from your router to your console and you're set. ... (more)

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time hits theaters next month, and it carries with it the hopes of gamers that it'll finally be the great (or at least kind of OK) videogame film adaptation we've been waiting for. And speaking to Gamasutra, prolific producer Jerry Bruckheimer talked about the poor track record for movies based on games, and how their approach in adapting The Sands of Time didn't differ from how they make any other movie. But it's here, just above, and Volatile Games project director Imre Jele is back again to lay out how the game was put together over the past few years. Jele describes the development as akin to a kid in a candy shop, unable to pick just one item and instead choosing everything.
