Review: Naruto Shippuden Ultimate Ninja Storm Generations

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1848 days, 4 hours, 47 minutes ago
Friday, May 04, 2012 8:05:41 AM GMT
The Naruto series of games is another in a long line of fighting titles based on a popular anime series. What seems to set this series apart from the others, however, is its focus on a pick-up-and-play attitude. While many games will focus on a series' storied history (or just its story) Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Generations aims to streamline everything so the focus is on the gameplay itself. Review: Botanicula

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1852 days, 4 hours, 48 minutes ago
Monday, April 30, 2012 8:05:21 AM GMT
Amanita Design showed that there was definitely still legs in the point 'n click adventure genre when they released the charming Machinarium in 2009. The tale of a small robot seeking his true love both looked and sounded great and the game was a really solid old school adventure title. However, Amanita's new game Botanicula owes more to the slightly more abstract Samorost games, the last of which came out in 2005. Does Botanicula still fit into the point and click mold or is it more unique type of game? (more)

Games are growing up. There is a very real movement to mine greater emotional depth from interactive entertainment, to produce clever narratives and explore engaging themes. We're seeing games that strive for a level of maturity above simple guts and sexual gratuity, and while there's an incredibly long way to go, it's encouraging to see games that do speak to something more meaningful than what we're used to. Review: Risen 2: Dark Waters

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1859 days, 5 hours, 32 minutes ago
Monday, April 23, 2012 7:20:44 AM GMT
The original Risen was a curious little beast. In a genre so used to empowering the player, letting one live out heroic fantasies in a world full of treasure, choice, and magnificent deeds, Risen was quite prepared to strip you of your dignity, kick you around a bit, and spit you out a more humble, more shameful, individual. You know that when the main characters of the game you're about to play are adorable animals like cats and penguins, you're possibly playing a game aimed at children. A few months ago, I played Shaun The Sheep: Home Sheep Home 2 and found that despite the game being made for children, there was still a lot of fun to be had. (more)

Review: Blacklight: Retribution

When I first heard that Blacklight: Tango Down was getting a sequel, I was stunned. While the original game looked pretty, this particular reviewer found it incredibly tiresome and miserable to play. I was reluctant to tackle its free-to-play successor, but decided to give it a try anyway (more)

Review: FEZ

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1866 days, 5 hours, 18 minutes ago
Monday, April 16, 2012 7:34:36 AM GMT
FEZ is an indie platformer with a retro look and a central premise that is as unique as it is simple. Sound familiar? Such games are a dime a dozen these days, with new ones cropping up every week, but back when FEZ was first revealed, it truly stood out from the crowd. (more)

Review: FIFA Street

Saturday, April 14, 2012 7:22:00 AM GMT
The somewhat mythologized sub-genre called street soccer -- as presented by FIFA Street -- is hedonistic and excessive, with a strong tilt toward showboating and theatrics. It’s puzzling, then, that EA Sports decided to use Lionel Messi for the game’s cover art. (more)

Review: Hegemony Gold: Wars of Ancient Greece

Ancient Greece is one of the most fascinating time-place combinations. It brought us the beginnings of calculus, philosophy, democracy, and an incredibly rich and vibrant culture that has managed to survive in one form or another until the modern era. (more)

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1875 days, 5 hours, 37 minutes ago

11 bit Studios' Anomaly Warzone Earth was a creative little "tower offense" title, and a big hit on PC and mobile last year. Now it has finally been released on Xbox Live Arcade. Mouse and keyboard controls are out, full gamepad controls are in, and a set of "Tactical Trials" have been thrown in the mix for good measure. (more)

Review: Kinect Star Wars

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1876 days, 5 hours, 43 minutes ago
Friday, April 06, 2012 7:09:46 AM GMT
Following a few ramshackle E3 presentations, expectations for Kinect Star Wars were tempered at best. After footage of the game's Galactic Dance Off mode, featuring a dancing Han Solo at the carbonite pit, hit YouTube, these expectations turned from "low" to "the deathblow for the entire Star Wars franchise." If you want to get in on the mad craze of people uploading gameplay videos from their consoles to the YouTubes, there are only a few ways to go about it. You could get a video camera, point it at your television and press record, but people these days demand that their definitions be high. That means you'll need a way to capture the footage directly from your console. (more)

Call it a cliché, but it’d be in bad critical taste not to bring up that indie heavyweight when evaluating puzzle platformers. It’s the benchmark of the genre, one that games like Limbo and P.B. Winterbottom have come close to meeting but can never quite stand shoulder-to-shoulder with. (more)

Review: Ridge Racer Unbounded

Ridge Racer is a series best known for slick arcade racing rather than over-the-top crashes, making Bugbear seem like an odd developer choice. Can the Finnish studio help Ridge Racer move into a new direction, or is Ridge Racer Unbounded heading up a dead alley at dangerously fast speeds? (more)

Review: Warriors Orochi 3

Warriors Orochi 3 is Tecmo Koei's Super Smash Bros. Considering Nintendo's pedigree as compared to Tecmo Koei's, that statement can be seen as quite laughable, but nevertheless, Warriors Orochi 3 dabbles in the kind of crossover content usually reserved for the most prestigious companies in this industry. Perhaps these two issues are tied closer together than some may think. It’s a matter of innovation, I believe. With new concepts made possible through improved network and graphical ability, the once tired mech genre stands a chance to fight again with games like Hawken, MechWarrior Online, and Armored Core V. Review: Silent Hill HD Collection

It's been tough as a Silent Hill fan, watching Konami poison what once was the reigning champion of the survival horror genre. Even if you enjoy some of the sequels and spin-offs that have been produced over the years, there's no denying that the credibility and prestige of the series is all but dried up. (more)

Review: Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1893 days, 4 hours, 48 minutes ago

I love Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. I love playing the game, hanging out with other people while they're playing the game, reading about the game, and watching videos of the game; you name it, I love it. It would have been really hard for Konami to make it so I don't enjoy playing one of my favorite games ever on my current favorite videogame console (the 3DS), but heavens to Murgatroyd, they came pretty close. Review: Jagged Alliance: Back in Action

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1896 days, 4 hours, 56 minutes ago
Saturday, March 17, 2012 7:57:00 AM GMT
Ask any old-school PC gamer about his favorite tactical games, and more often than not you'll find a Jagged Alliance title near the top of the list. It's a name held in nearly as high regard as X-COM or Syndicate, and for good reason. Sir-Tech's classic series combined impressive depth with character and personality, cementing its place in the pantheon of all-time PC greats. (more)

Sony San Diego has consistently produced well-regarded MLB The Show titles that easily outclassed other simulation baseball games. The studio has for years been fighting the stagnation that typically results from a lack of strong competition, and has predominantly met with success. (more)
