Da New Guys: Day of the Jackass

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1925 days, 3 hours, 20 minutes ago
Friday, March 16, 2012 6:57:16 AM GMT
"Great," I thought, "is this going to be some low brow, cash-in?" Actually, Da New Guys is almost entirely a one-man show developed by Chris Burton (aka Icebox Games). Is his vision enough to make the game stand out among more notable point-and-click adventures? (more)

Review: Vessel

Puzzle platformers are a bit of a staple of independent games. Since Braid saw critical and commercial success in 2008, the genre has almost become saturated, and while each game may explore its own new ideas in various ways, it has become increasingly difficult to care about them on the level they deserve. Review: Yakuza: Dead Souls

What a great idea: take the gangsters you know and love from the Yakuza series and put them up against zombies, quarantining them in Tokyo's red-light district. Oh, and give them guns. Lots of guns with unlimited ammo. (more)

Review: Silent Hill: Downpour

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1929 days, 1 hour, 29 minutes ago
Monday, March 12, 2012 8:48:02 AM GMT
Silent Hill 2 is my favorite videogame of all time, and it is possibly due to this that I have had a somewhat tempestuous relationship with the series ever since. My desperation to see Konami's classic horror series reach the narrative and atmospheric heights of its first sequel has led to great frustration with the games that have appeared since. (more)

Review: Wargame: European Escalation

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1939 days, 1 hour, 8 minutes ago

Growing up during the dawn of PC strategy games, playing everything from Dune II and Command & Conquer to Panzer General, took its toll on my teenage years. History classes only became worth paying attention to when it concerned old battles and famous generals, and I even had a period where I was convinced I was destined to become a battlefield commander when I grew up. Over the past couple years, film directors such as Mike Cahill and Duncan Jones have offered a much softer take on the sci-fi genre, one where science, man's relationship with nature, and personal tragedy trump gun fights and epic alien warfare. (more)

Review: Journey

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1939 days, 1 hour, 9 minutes ago
Friday, March 02, 2012 9:08:10 AM GMT
How does one describe Journey, exactly? It's a videogame unlike any other, to the point where calling it a videogame doesn't quite feel right. One could call it an art game, but that would draw comparisons with infinitely less distinguished pieces of software. Whatever label you want to affix to thatgamecompany's latest creation, there's one description that absolutely everybody should be able to agree on. (more)

Review: Alan Wake's American Nightmare

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1942 days, 1 hour, 5 minutes ago
Tuesday, February 28, 2012 9:11:55 AM GMT
Ask any fan why they like Alan Wake, and you'll hear different stories. Some will talk about how they enjoyed the Stephen King, Twin Peaks, and Lost inspired storyline and setting. Others will laud the tense experience on the Hard and Nightmare difficulties, or the use of music. None of them will try to convince you that Alan Wake was by any means a perfect game but, more than anything, they will all tell you how much they want another title. (more)

Review: Tales From Space: Mutant Blobs Attack

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1945 days, 23 minutes ago
Saturday, February 25, 2012 9:54:41 AM GMT
While early adopters of the PlayStation Vita have whipped themselves into an excited frenzy over the likes of Uncharted and Marvel vs. Capcom 3, one humble little indie game sits patiently among the high profile offerings, just waiting to be discovered. It arrived with little fanfare, but those who have discovered it are trumpeting its qualities quite loudly. (more)

Review: Asphalt Injection

Just as I was settling in to start typing this review, I had to reach for the case while muttering, "What is this one even called?" Such is the existence of the Asphalt series, a racing game so indistinct that you could play five different ones in a day and struggle to tell them apart. (more)

Review: Dynasty Warriors NEXT

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1947 days, 1 hour, 9 minutes ago

If you build it, a Dynasty Warriors spin-off will come. This has been true of any game system released in the past few years, and Tecmo Koei has no intention of breaking tradition with the PlayStation Vita. Dynasty Warriors NEXT can't wait to get out of the door, releasing as a launch title for Sony's handheld system. (more)

Review: Army Corps of Hell

Imagine Pikmin with demons and death metal -- that's kind of like what Army Corps of Hell is. Instead of commanding cute little plant-like creatures in an oxygen-heavy forest, you'll command nasty goblins in the bowels of flaming Hell, playing as the former King of the land. (more)

If Lumines was your drug on the PSP, know that it's been refined and made stronger. This is the hard sh*t, folks. You're in danger of totally crashing and burning with Lumines: Electronic Symphony on the Vita. This is the worst for those who barely managed to shake their addiction, as you're never getting off this stuff. (more)

Review: Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1963 days, 1 hour, 53 minutes ago
Tuesday, February 07, 2012 8:24:01 AM GMT
Sometimes, the best way to become a blockbuster videogame is to act like you already are one. That seems to be Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning's modus operandi, and the gambit is paying off. Despite the big names attached to the project, very few people paid attention to the game until recently, when it started confidently presenting itself as a game that everybody wants. (more)

In recent years, the platform game has been coming back into style with releases such as Rayman Origins and Donkey Kong Country Returns catching the attention of gamers across the globe. But there have always been those certain platformers that test your reflexes and timing more than your standard Mario or Sonic fare. During the NES generation, titles like Ghosts’N Goblins or Castlevania demanded that you use all of your skills in order to succeed. Now it seems that the most challenging platformers have ... (more)
