Review: Breach

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2365 days, 18 hours, 55 minutes ago
Friday, January 28, 2011 7:39:57 AM GMT
Atomic Games has had a rough time leading up to the release of Breach. Originally developing the controversial Six Days in Fallujah, which had publisher Konami famously pull support, Atomic went on to salvage what it could to produce this multiplayer-only downloadable first-person modern military shooter. Review: CSI: Fatal Conspiracy

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2382 days, 18 hours, 39 minutes ago
Tuesday, January 11, 2011 7:56:00 AM GMT
Last year’s CSI: Deadly Intent was a bit of an ugly duckling, and something many of us would easily scoff at if we saw it in a store. Yet even though it was just a CSI version of Ace Attorney with a crime lab -- without a courtroom or anything in-game to object to -- there was something special about finding the killer’s DNA on a pair of undies. Not to mention some of the ridiculous cases you had to solve. (more)

Review: Back to the Future: The Game, Episode 1

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2395 days, 17 hours, 31 minutes ago
Wednesday, December 29, 2010 9:04:27 AM GMT
If I were the owner of a beloved franchise of films and wanted to expand that franchise into videogames, there are very few companies whom I would trust to do a license justice. And if comedy is a major component of the formula that makes fans of my properties, the list narrows to just one: Telltale Games. That's because Telltale seems to care about the licenses for which they publish games beyond the scope of their own titles and, for my money, there's nobody funnier in the industry right now. (more)

Review: RAGE

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2431 days, 18 hours, 43 minutes ago
Tuesday, November 23, 2010 7:52:29 AM GMT
id's upcoming post-apocalyptic shooter RAGE is still almost a year away, but why should we wait that long before getting to blast some of the ugliest mutants this side of Total Recall? In order to keep the hype going for the full game, id has released RAGE on the iPhone as an on-rails shooter. Now that's good advertising! (more)

NVIDIA launches sub-$80 GeForce GT 430 for single-slot cooler enthusiasts

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2473 days, 18 hours, 44 minutes ago
Tuesday, October 12, 2010 7:51:26 AM GMT
The graphics card that doesn't require a fridge-sized cooler is turning into something of a rarity nowadays, but we doubt the market for quiet, efficient, and halfway-decent GPUs is ever going to disappear completely. NVIDIA is fleshing out its Fermi family today with a creature that aspires to such epithets, the 96 CUDA core-equipped GT 430. ... (more)

Review: Shoot to Kill

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2495 days, 19 hours, 7 minutes ago

I look forward to playing iPhone shooters about as much as I look forward to my first prostate exam, because I imagine they’re quite similar. There’s an awkwardly painful use of touch immediately followed by feelings of helplessness and frustration, and you’re paying to have the experience, to boot. Whether FPS, TPS, or twin-stick, non-shmup shooters on this platform always seem to suffer from the same issues. (more)

And Yet It Moves

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2501 days, 23 hours, 26 minutes ago
Tuesday, September 14, 2010 3:09:44 AM GMT
If you're into indie games, then you already know of And Yet It Moves. It's been all over the indie scene winning awards and winning people over with its world rotating platform gameplay. However, just a few weeks ago it landed on WiiWare with new motion controls built in, and theoretically that should make the game even better since rotating the game's worlds should be even easier when all you have to do is twist your wrist. Review: Ys Seven

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2520 days, 19 hours ago

'm trying to remember the last time I played an action RPG. I...can't. Maybe that's why playing through Falcom's newly released Ys Seven was so refreshing. It's not amazing or groundbreaking by any measure, but it is lighthearted, polished and fun. When was the last time you said that about any game? (more)

Review: Monday Night Combat

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2529 days, 17 hours, 51 minutes ago
Tuesday, August 17, 2010 8:44:42 AM GMT
Two teams of cartoon-like class-based combatants compete in multiplayer arenas with a range of quirky skills and ludicrous weapons. Sound familiar? Of course it does! Monday Night Combat looks and sounds as derivative as they come, with an art style and general premise that appears shamelessly ripped from Valve's Team Fortress 2. However, under its aesthetic surface, Monday Night Combat boasts a deceptively inventive core, with a unique blending of genres that works surprisingly well. (more)

Arc Rise Fantasia

As the Wii library expands and amasses progressively more "hardcore" game experiences, it begins to resemble a PlayStation 2 more with each passing day. That image is helped with the number of traditional Japanese roleplaying games that have been popping into the pipeline lately. (more)

Review: Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2556 days, 19 hours, 4 minutes ago
Wednesday, July 21, 2010 7:31:34 AM GMT
Tiger Woods’ extramarital affairs made headlines last year, but in spite of his off-the-golf-course troubles, EA Sports forged ahead with the 2010 release of their annual golf franchise. However, Tiger shares the cover spotlight this year with the young North Irish phenom Rory McIlroy, a telling decision. (more)

Review: Toribash

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2556 days, 19 hours, 14 minutes ago
Wednesday, July 21, 2010 7:20:59 AM GMT
Toribash is a turn-based strategy/fighting game hybrid that does a lot of interesting things. It's been around for a while as a free Mac/PC game, but it was only recently that the game hit consoles. The big difference is, the game costs $10 on WiiWare. If you're like me, you expect that $10 to go towards something. With Cave Story (another free PC game gone for-profit on WiiWare), we got redrawn graphics, re-worked music, two new difficulty modes, and a load of other bonus features. (more)

Review: Backbreaker

“You come at the king, you best not miss,” says stick-up man Omar Little in The Wire, when he retaliates against the Barksdale organization after they put a bounty on his head and tried to take him out. Madden is the king when it comes to football videogames -- if by default -- and threats to its throne so far, such as 2K Sports’ All-Pro Football 2K8, have failed to capture an audience. (more)

Peripherally Speaking: VD-W3 Upscaler for Wii

Some time ago, we told you about a new accessory which would allow you to connect your Wii to a display using HDMI or DV-I. In addition, it can upscale video from the system's native 480i resolution up as far as 1080p. The VD-31 from VDGI Electronics is that product. (more)

Review: 2010 FIFA World Cup

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2639 days, 20 hours, 45 minutes ago
Thursday, April 29, 2010 5:49:52 AM GMT
After receiving a quick pass at the top of the box in a qualifying match against Denmark, Albanian striker Hamdi Salihi fired a neat ball across keeper Thomas Sørensen into the bottom corner of the goal. In the midst of his celebrations, I held down the left bumper on my controller and toggled the right stick back and forth, prompting Salihi into a series of -- for lack of a better word -- jump kicks, the last of which hit defender Daniel Agger in the face. Review: Super Street Fighter IV

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2641 days, 18 hours, 46 minutes ago
Tuesday, April 27, 2010 7:49:06 AM GMT
There's no denying that the release of Street Fighter IV revitalized the fighting scene. While dedicated fighter fans were still playing their favorite (and mostly older) games, the fighting genre really wasn't getting much attention from the overall gaming public. Since Street Fighter IV, there's been a huge uptick in both the number of companies making fighting games, and the number of gamers interested in fighters. (more)

Review: Trauma Team

Ah, the world of Trauma Team. It's a pretty unique place with pretty unique people. Everyone seems to have either huge boobs or huge noses. Everyone's relatively attractive, yet strangely familiar looking at the same time. Everyone lives their lives set to a porno-ish soundtrack and everyone yells "dammit" whenever possible. (more)

DSiWare Capsule Reviews: Week of April 12, 2010

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2654 days, 16 hours, 58 minutes ago
Wednesday, April 14, 2010 9:37:40 AM GMT
The Nintendo DSi is quickly becoming a platform of its own. The system, released in April 2009, isn't much more than upgraded Nintendo DS technology, but its built-in cameras and its incorporated data storage give developers more to work with. And the DSi Shop can be a virtual sandbox for game creators to incorporate the DSi capabilities into downloadable titles. Or it's just an easy way to get simple DS ideas into gamers' hands without going the much more expensive retail route. (more)
