Pachter expects 360 price cut at E3, PS3 and Wii to follow suit

posted by adminadmin 2471 days, 23 hours, 34 minutes ago
Tuesday, March 08, 2011 9:50:26 AM GMT
Gaming industry analyst Michael Pachter has updated his predictions about the console price cuts he anticipates will occur this year. A Wedbush Securities update distributed this morning said, "We expect Microsoft to announce a price cut at this year's E3 Expo in June, and expect Sony and Nintendo to rapidly follow suit." Until then, Pachter expects that consoles sales will steadily decline, with the 3DS providing enough juice to bring things back into the positives in April. (more)

When Sony hacked $50 from the PSP Go's price earlier this week, it didn't exactly trumpet the news, and now it's looking like a permanent $150 MSRP for the UMD-less handheld was too good to be true. (more)

Saturday, February 26, 2011 10:11:43 AM GMT
Guerrilla has revealed the second downloadable map pack for Killzone 3, Steel Rain. The pack contains two new multiplayer maps, Junkyard and Stahl Arms. Junkyard is designed for 16-player Guerrilla Warfare, while Stahl Arms is a large map dedicated to 24-player Warzone matches. Both levels were featured heavily in the single-player, so expect the maps to be repurposed versions of those, as is Guerrilla's MO. (more)

Sony PSP dips down to $130, wants to be your cheap thrill until the NGP gets here

Sony is treating its portable gaming fans well these days by giving them the one-two punch of having both a world-beating device to look forward to in the future and an affordable one to pass the time with until then. Starting this Sunday, the venerable PSP-3000 will be yours to own for just $130, taking it dangerously close to impulse buy territory, while Sony is also adding a few more titles to its $20 PSP Greatest Hits collection, including Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker ... PSN classics archive numbers over 600 games ... in Japan

posted by adminadmin 2484 days, 12 minutes ago

Sony recently celebrated the considerable size of its "Game Archives" on the Japanese PlayStation Store, which now warehouses more than 600 titles of yesteryear. Siliconera took note of the achievement (er, Trophy?), pointing out that the collection spans a modest assortment of TurboGrafx-16 and Neo Geo games, but for the most part it's made up of PS1 titles. Review: Killzone 3

Halo and Call of Duty are often held up as the twin peaks of online first-person-shooters. Meanwhile Killzone is regularly overlooked or outright disregarded, and that's a remarkable shame, since Guerrilla's efforts with Killzone 2 led to perhaps one of the most vivid and powerful shooters on the market. PlayStation hackers reportedly able to unban selves, ban others, turn tables

posted by adminadmin 2485 days, 3 hours, 7 minutes ago
Wednesday, February 23, 2011 6:18:21 AM GMT
Just last week Sony said that those found to have hacked their PlayStation 3 consoles would have their PlayStation Network access "terminated permanently." Harsh words that, unsurprisingly, weren't too warmly received by the hacking community. Destructoid is now reporting that not only have those tinkerers found a way to unban themselves, but that they can in turn ban any other console they want. (more)

Next PS3 update rumored to add 'Online Saving' for PlayStation Plus users

Say it with us, finally a PS3 firmware update that actually does something useful! We've grown so accustomed to Sony refreshing the software on its console just to spite jailbreakers that we almost started to believe that's all the word "update" entailed. But, here comes Kotaku with word that v3.6 of the PS3's firmware will come with a neat little addition: saving games to the cloud. (more)

PS3 firmware 3.56 hacked in less than a day, Sony's lawyers look confused (update)

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2509 days ago
Sunday, January 30, 2011 9:24:51 AM GMT
Sony's taken some strong steps against PS3 cracking in the past week -- not only has it taken to the courts and won a temporary restraining order against Geohot and fail0verflow for cracking the console, but it also released firmware 3.56, which locked things down again. Unfortunately, that restraining order doesn't mean anyone else has to stop a-crackin', and wouldn't you know it: 3.56 was cracked open in less than a day by KaKaRoToKS, who was behind one of the first 3.55 custom firmwares. Now that the ... (more)

MLB 11 The Show has one-button controls for the disabled

Thanks to its ongoing relationship with a disabled gamer, Sony San Diego has added a special difficulty level to this year's iteration of its annual baseball series, MLB 11 The Show. Hans Smith, a 25-year-old St. Louis Cardinals fan with cerebral palsy, wrote a letter to the developer a few years ago, and the studio was so struck by his words that they put him in last year's game, reports ESPN. Not all NGP models will support 3G

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2511 days, 1 hour, 44 minutes ago
Friday, January 28, 2011 7:41:09 AM GMT
Sony has clarified that its upcoming portable, codenamed "Next Generation Portable," will come in more than one flavor. That 3G support it mentioned won't be featured in every NGP model. According to Sony Europe's Andrew House, only one model will feature the 3G capability, and the service will (obviously) cost extra. All units, however, will ship with Wi-Fi support, explains House. Sony's PlayStation Portable successor, the NGP, is already looking to be supported by a slew of popular franchises. Among them are Insomniac's Resistance and Naughty Dog's Uncharted; the impressive portable versions of both games were demonstrated at Sony's Tokyo NGP event this week. But neither studio will be working directly on the titles, its been confirmed. (more)

EEDAR's Jesse Divnich estimates NGP will cost $300 to $350

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2511 days, 1 hour, 49 minutes ago

Electronic Entertainment Design and Research analyst Jesse Divnich has a few ideas about what Sony meant by "an affordable price that's appropriate for the handheld gaming space" when talking about the NGP's launch price. Speaking with GamesIndustry, Divnich predicted that the device would retail for between $299 and $349 at launch, which ... um, seems a little high when compared to other contenders in the "handheld gaming space." It looked for a moment like Geohot and fail0verflow might beat Sony's DMCA lawsuit over the PS3 jailbreak on a jurisdictional technicality, but things didn't go their way: the US District Court for the Northern District of California granted Sony's request for a temporary restraining order forbidding Mr. Hotz and his merry men from distributing or linking to the jailbreak... Sony's next PSP (codename NGP): a closer look

Following the unveil of its bodacious next generation portable (NGP) PlayStation device, Sony let a swarm of journalists (including us) on stage to get a closer look at the PSP's dual-stick, quad-core successor. No touching, but we were able to direct our lens mighty close and compare the NXP with a PSP and PSP Go before the on-hand staff shooed us away. Enjoy the pictures (more)

Mock it up, talk it up and leak it out all you want, only Sony has the power to actually bring the so-called "PSP2" into the world -- and that moment has come. The "sequel" to the PlayStation Portable was made official today (like, just now!) during a press event in Japan, looking every bit as -- well, that thing looks like the PSP, doesn't it? (more)
