November NPD: Best month ever for retail, Xbox

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2561 days, 1 hour, 28 minutes ago
Friday, December 10, 2010 8:44:36 AM GMT
November is traditionally a big, big month for games, thanks to the impending holidays and the temporary financial insanity bestowed upon Americans by the Black Friday Effect. This November may have been the biggest. The NPD reports that last month was the "best November on record in terms of new physical retail sales," ahead of November 2008 by around $30 million. Call of Duty: Black Ops had the biggest first month of any game ever, with 8.4 million copies. (more)

PlayStation Phone prototype video reveals 3D benchmark results

Given that the PlayStation Phone has yet to be officially announced -- though, ya know, come on -- you probably shouldn't look disappointed that Qualcomm's Neocore benchmark app only showed the phone averaging 24.4 frames per second. As Engadget points out, the hardware is likely not final and neither is that software. (more)

Rumor: PlanetSide Next launching in March

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2561 days, 1 hour, 32 minutes ago
Friday, December 10, 2010 8:40:56 AM GMT
A PlanetSide sequel is sort of like the long-in-development third Ghostbusters movie. We've been hearing it's on the way for so long that we're starting to suspect the whole thing's a long con, a grift, if you will, designed to bilk us out of ... something. First Sony hinted it was in development in September of '09, then SOE's John Smedley called it "PlanetSide Next" a month later. (more)

Gaming PS3 update v3.55 adds 'a security patch,' nothing else

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2562 days, 2 hours ago

Another day, another annoying distraction when you turn on your PlayStation 3. Prepare to be prompted to update your machine, version 3.55 hitting the internets and offering a single thing: "a security patch." No word on exactly which holes are being spackled over or how long it'll take for modders to drill them back out again, but be sure to pledge your allegiance and update today, so that you can be better prepared to update again tomorrow. Well, lookie what our amigos at Engadget have stumbled upon: a purported video of the Sony Ericsson ZEUS-Z1 "PlayStation Phone" being handled by a YouTube user by the alias of "xxmajstor." Whoever they are, they show the very PSP Go-esque phone off for upwards of two minutes, sliding it open to reveal the previously reported on game controls, including the "touch strip" that evidently sits in for dual analog sticks. Sony Bravia KDL-22PX300 LCD makes room for a PS2, your classic game collection

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2565 days, 22 hours, 48 minutes ago
Sunday, December 05, 2010 11:24:39 AM GMT
Sure, the PS3 is what's hip and happening for Sony game fans, but unless you picked up one of the first generation (chubby) units you have questionable support for the greatest generation of games: those that released for the PS2. But, don't fret noble gamer, and don't lament about trading that console in for $15 store credit a few years back. Just buy a new TV! Sony's KDL-22PX300 LCD has a rather hunky base that conceals a fully working PlayStation 2. (more)

Sony representative says no 3D support for LittleBigPlanet 2

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2565 days, 22 hours, 50 minutes ago

Sony and Media Molecule have remained relatively tight-lipped on whether their even-more-customizable platformer, LittleBigPlanet 2, would feature the kind of 3D support that's quickly becoming a mainstay for major PS3 releases. Though we've heard a few reports to the contrary from Sony in the past, SCEA marketing manager Mark Valledor recently responded to a PlayStation.Blog commenter who asked whether LBP 2 would feature the eye-popping tech, explaining, "Sorry, no 3D this time around." Sony announced this week that BBC America programming is heading to PlayStation 3's across the United States. To kick off the new partnership, BBC America has made the first episode of the American version of "Top Gear" available at no charge (normally $1.99 for SD, $2.99 for HD), at least for the first two weeks. "Doctor Who" and "Being Human" will join "Top Gear" on the network's launch list at some point in December, and BBC America promises to "rapidly add BBC programming each week, including the bes... We've had like, one dream our entire lives, and that dream is to drive a real-life light cycle. Is that too much to ask? Tron: Evolution says "No, of course not," as the game's latest dev diary reveals that the PlayStation Move controller pretty much allows you to simulate that experience as well as you can in this, the year of our lord 2010. Canadian thieves steal $1 million in Sony PlayStation goods, couldn't wait any longer for GT5

Crime doesn't pay, folks, but sometimes you have to be at least somewhat amused by the shenanigans of those who operate beneath the law. Workers at a shipping facility in Brampton, Ontario discovered on Monday that a trailer containing $500,000 worth of Sony goods was stolen. Apparently whatever measures they took to prevent a recurrence were insufficient, because the very next day a second trailer went missing containing even more PS3 and PSP games and hardware. (more)
