The US PlayStation blog has announced that Sparkworkz' Super Stacker is coming to the PSN tomorrow. For $9.99, you can experience Super Stacker's over 100 levels of animated shape-stacking mayhem, putting little grunting pieces with faces together in sturdy (and not-so sturdy) constructions. Or, you could, y'know, play it online for free. (more)

ModNation Racers was pitched as a kind of kart-racer meets LittleBigPlanet, so half the fun is in the character customizations. These homages to Spider-Man, David Hasselhoff and The Bride from Kill Bill show how deep the creation engine runs. (more)

Sony offering PSP developers code to 'slow down' piracy

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2564 days, 16 hours, 58 minutes ago
Saturday, May 22, 2010 8:30:05 AM GMT
Sony's senior vice president of publisher relations, Rob Dyer, has always been vocal about the "biggest problem" that plagues the PSP: Piracy. However, a new endeavor by the platform holder may offer renewed hope in the continued battle against illegal downloads. Dyer told Gamasutra that Sony has been helping developers implement some kind of protective code, potentially offering "a 60-day shelf life" before a game inevitably "gets hacked." (more)

Yesterday Google announced it was teaming up with Intel, Sony and Logitech for a little venture called Google TV. Though Sony is to supply the televisions (and Intel the chips for those tellies), Logitech is supplying not only the remotes and keyboards but standalone companion boxes for those of us who don't feel like investing in a new TV just for Google. Kevin Butler hypes ModNation Racers, gets schooled by Tretton

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2569 days, 5 hours, 32 minutes ago

The latest video from Sony's fictional Vice President of a whole bunch of things has everything you could ever ask for: Tons of Kevin Butler bon mots, some clips of gameplay footage from ModNation Racers, and an appearance by real-life Sony president and CEO Jack Tretton. Unless, of course -- what if Tretton's actually just a highly paid actor as well? Come to think of it, we've never seen him in any context except for ... on the stage! (more)

A trailer embedded in a post on the U.S. PlayStation.Blog has revealed that Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep, which had previously been promised to hit North American store shelves this summer, has received a firm release date of September 7. If you're extra enthusiastic about vanquishing the Heartless, the post explains that you'll also be able to pick up a hardware bundle that includes the game, an unannounced movie, a 4GB memory stick and a "Mystic Silver" (that's fancy-speak for "plain ol' silver") PSP... The inner workings of the PlayStation Move - Destructoid

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2570 days, 17 hours, 43 minutes ago
Sunday, May 16, 2010 7:44:43 AM GMT
Our good friends over at the PlayStation blog have quietly been publishing neat developer diaries featuring Sony's small magical black wand, the PlayStation Move. It goes without saying, Sony's new marketing approach and branding of the PlayStation 3 has radically changed, gone is the creepy crying baby in the white room -- replaced with the hilarious Kevin Butler. Sony's classic practices of keeping things tight lipped and tucked away in their secret room of tricks, seems to be absent and shunned away b... (more)

No one knows when Gran Turismo 5 is actually coming out, but we do know this: the famous Nürburgring racing complex will be playable in the game. All three of Nürburgring's tracks -- the Grand Prix, the Nordschliefe, and the Nürburgring 24 Hours course -- are being included as part of the 70+ courses in the game. The Nordschliefe track appeared in Gran Turismo 4 and Gran Turismo PSP, but this is the first time either of the other two tracks will show up in the series. Check out eight screenshots in the g... Ahh, surveys. They're fascinating glimpses into the ideas that a company is considering. Joystiq reports that Sony has been floating one around asking about potential additions to Zipper Interactive's hugongous FPS, MAG. What additions might those be? First off is a game mode referred to as "Interdiction," in which 128 players on two teams fight for control of three neutral points on the map as opposed to one team attacking and the other defending. If you have any interest in Sony's upcoming ModNation Racers, you've probably already read our review (and entered our giveaway). You're familiar, then, with our biggest grief with the early review code: obnoxiously long load times. Apparently we weren't the only ones to notice. According to Chuck Lacson, associate marketing manager at SCEA, developer United Front Games is "looking into further optimizing the game via a post-launch patch." (more)

Take home the real-life, solar-powered ModNation Racers golf cart

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2573 days, 6 hours, 1 minute ago
Thursday, May 13, 2010 7:27:01 PM GMT
Alright, stick with us, here: Last month, Sony collaborated with graphic artist Jeremiah Garcia to create a ModNation Racers-branded golf cart. It was supposed to be designed to look like it was created by the indie rock troupe Passion Pit (of LittleBigPlanet 2 trailer fame) -- whatever that means. The cart, which runs on solar power, was then displayed at the Coachella Festival to help promote the green energy movement in collaboration with the non-profit group Global Inheritance. But never mind all of ... (more)

PS3 proved profitable in last Sony fiscal year

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2573 days, 6 hours, 6 minutes ago
Thursday, May 13, 2010 7:21:53 PM GMT
The PS3 was a bright spot for Sony in its fiscal year 2009 (ending March 31, 2010). Thanks to a strong yen and a rise in PS3 hardware sales (you go Slim!), the console finally became profitable for Sony at the tail end of the fiscal year, according to Reuters (via adriasang); despite the Network Products & Services division, which includes games, seeing a decline in overall product sales. The division operated at a loss of ¥8.3 billion ($89.38 million), a marginal improvement over the previous year's... (more)

Air Force feels afterburned as Sony clips the PS3's Linux wings

When we learned that the Air Force was buying 300 PS3s we knew it could mean only one thing: all-night HAWX LAN party. But, when the order came through for 2,200 more, it seemed something more serious was afoot, and sure enough the armed force that aims higher was aiming to use them as a cluster for high-def video processing. Sony turns VAIO P into world's most expensive PS3 keyboard

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2575 days, 6 hours, 43 minutes ago

Yesterday we told you what we thought about the new VAIO P, an $800 conversation piece of a netbook, and now Sony is giving potential owners something else to talk about. The little laptop has been granted "Remote Keyboard" functionality, turning it into a sort of giant economy sized version of the PlayStation 3 Wireless Keypad, a device we weren't particularly fond of when we first played with it way back in 2008. Sony announces faster Memory Stick Pro-HG Duo HX, children's eyes light up with glee

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2575 days, 6 hours, 47 minutes ago

Can you handle an even faster Memory Stick? It's the Memory Stick Pro-HG Duo HX series, which Sony is speeding up but, curiously, isn't tacking any more random letters to the already ridiculous name. The cards offer maximum capacity of 32GB and transfer rates of 30MB/s, and while Sony doesn't indicate whether that's a read or a write speed (we're guessing read) they should handily out-class even high-class SD-based storage options. Following information about Game Informer's feature article on LittleBigPlanet 2, Media Molecule Tweeted that the game is, in fact, real, and that we can expect "full mega details on Monday." (more)
