Sony: 'No definitive plans' for Resistance series, no games currently in the works

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1914 days, 14 hours, 23 minutes ago
Wednesday, June 27, 2012 8:59:38 AM GMT
The folks who created the Resistance series, Insomniac Games, are no longer working on it. This much we know. But what of Sony? The Japanese publishing giant owns the intellectual property rights to the Resistance series – as evidenced by the recent release of Resistance: Burning Skies on Vita, developed by Nihilistic – but is it planning on any more series entries? "We have no definitive plans," Sony Computer Entertainment Europe producer Daniel Brooke said in a recent interview. (more)

Juliet Starling's zombie slaying adventure might be coming to stores next Tuesday, but I wanted to talk to you about some other students affiliated with Grasshopper Manufacture. In June of last year the Lollipop Chainsaw developer launched their "Game Campus Festa" program, accepting pitches from teams of Japanese game development students looking to work alongside the studio to make PlayStation Vita titles. The bizarre-looking Tokyo Jungle, rather surprisingly, will be leaving Japan. As you probably heard, the title is going to release on PlayStation Network in Europe. It's also coming to North America, Joystiq has confirmed with Sony VP of product development and worldwide studios Scott Rohde. (more)

Wii U lead isn't important, contends Sony's Rohde

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1933 days, 16 hours, 49 minutes ago

Sony isn't talking next-gen at this year's E3. Nor is Microsoft. Nintendo's Wii U, however, got its big debut this week, and the console is planned for a holiday 2012 launch. As we learned in the last hardware generation and the generation before that, being the first out of the gate in terms of launching hardware can mean the difference between first and third place. SCEA Senior VP of Product Development and worldwide studios Scott Rohde, however, isn't worried about the potential for Wii U to lead the ... (more)

PSP gets its own homebrew online gaming network, outweighs Sony's own efforts (video)

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1940 days, 13 hours, 50 minutes ago

Sony made much ado of the PSP's position as one of the first online gaming consoles, but unless your idea of online play involves Skype calls, there hasn't been a lot to go on since 2004. Team PRO is addressing that deficit through Prometheus, a completely community-driven rival to PSN. The hack lets PSP games with support for ad hoc WiFi play go online by wrapping the normal local-only multiplayer in an emulator library that broadcasts to other Prometheus players. (more)

Remember that line-up of colorful consoles we eyed back at TGS? One of eight of those mock-ups is about to become a reality, at least in Japan. On June 28th, color conscious gamers will be able to pick up a WiFi or 3G Crystal White PlayStation Vita for ¥24,980 and ¥29,980, respectively (that's about $312 and $375 if you're counting in greenbacks). If the absence of color is a bit too bland for you, a limited edition Hatsune Miku handheld will hit shelves two days later, commanding a ¥10,000 ($125) premiu... (more)

When speaking about Major League Gaming, thoughts of "athlete" gamers battling each other for huge cash prizes while playing the likes of StarCraft 2, Halo: Reach, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and other competitive titles come to mind. The MLG professional Electronic sports organization itself adds the "pro" in pro gaming. It was founded by Sundance DiGiovanni and Mike Sepso back in 2002, and broadcasts its competitions across television, ESPN.com and other broadband sites like any other live sports ga... (more)

But now the plans are put on hold thanks to the current dispute between Comcast and Netflix. (more)

Hands-on preview: PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1975 days, 15 hours, 28 minutes ago
Friday, April 27, 2012 7:54:39 AM GMT
The rumors were true, and now that I've played it, I'm glad. Sony has been working on a mashup fighting game that pits many of their first-party characters against each other in a Smash Bros. style four-player match. This brawler was shown off for the first time earlier this week at a PlayStation press event, where I got to mash buttons playing as Kratos, Parappa the Rapper, Sly Cooper and others. They call it PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, and it's going to be a pretty big deal. (more)

Sony SmartWatch torn down and dissected, wishes it were a Pebble

Wondering how the innards of Sony's SmartWatch compared to the Motorola's MotoACTV? Wonder no more. One cmw has dissected the aforesaid timepiece, noting that most of what's inside doesn't live up to the superior hardware found in Moto's unit. Aside from finding a 110mAh battery (compared to 258mAh in the MotoACTV), there's also a Micrium uC/OS-II. For those just here for the eye candy, there's a bit of that down in the source link, too. When asked for comment, Pebble simply quipped: "Everyday I'm Shuffl... (more)
