Report: 3.5 million 3D Blu-ray discs 'sold' in first year, half were bundled with hardware

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2198 days, 21 hours, 29 minutes ago
Saturday, July 16, 2011 9:05:36 AM GMT
If we're looking at sales figures of 3.5 million units in the first year for a new laptop, smartphone, or camera, then we might be impressed. But 3D Blu-ray discs? When half were included in the box with a Blu-ray player? Man, that's gotta sting. Those numbers are based on an IHS Screen Digest estimate, tallying US sales beginning in June of 2010 and ending last month, though many larger titles didn't make their debut until later in the year. If a recent Kotaku tipster is to be believed, Sony plans on removing component cable support in their next PS3 hardware revision in favor of mandatory HDMI for HD playback. The tip comes in the form of a sneaky snapshot of what is claimed to be a Gamestop memo which states "if you want to play a game or watch a movie in high definition you must use a HDMI cable." (more)

AT&T launches Sony Ericsson Xperia Play with Gingerbread, blue color option

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2201 days, 22 hours, 53 minutes ago
Wednesday, July 13, 2011 7:41:06 AM GMT
Well, looky here. AT&T has very quietly revealed it's going to sell the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play. No press release, no splashy press conference backed by a cheesy disco soundtrack. The thing just showed up at the carrier's holiday preview event here in New York City. We're told it runs Gingerbread, which would make it AT&T's second Android 2.3 handset behind the newly launched HTC Status. Alas, AT&T won't say just yet when the Play will be available or how much it will cost on contract, but ... (more)

But in Japan, the birthplace of the PS3, the PSN revival hasn't gone beyond offering online gaming due to the government's concern about Sony's weak security. (more)

Sony Hacker GeoHot Now Working at Facebook

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2216 days, 22 hours, 36 minutes ago
Tuesday, June 28, 2011 7:58:42 AM GMT
Hacker George Hotz is best known for his work in cracking the iPhone and the PS3, but it seems he's now picked up a day job at Facebook. TechUnwrapped reports that Joshua Hill, a member of the Chronic-Dev Team group responsible for iOS jailbreak tool greenpois0n, said during a recent interview that Hotz had declined a challenge to find a bootrom exploit for the iPad 2. Hotz apparently said no because he wanted to keep publicity to a minimum and focus on his day job at Facebook. (more)

Well, Capcom's giving PSP owners a reason to charge up their systems again, dropping the prices on a portion of its UMD-based titles (little discs, seriously!) while supplies last. (more)

Sony Teases S1, S2 Tablets with Video

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2224 days, 21 hours, 38 minutes ago
Monday, June 20, 2011 8:56:37 AM GMT
Sony today released a teaser video in an attempt to drum up interest for its upcoming S1 and S2 tablet devices. However, though it’s nearly two minutes long, the video doesn’t exactly provide much in the way of new information about the tablets. Worst of all, it doesn’t even hint towards a more specific release date than the ever-vague ‘fall 2011’ we’ve been hearing from Sony. Ah, well, it is only episode one. Perhaps the next one will have more info on these Honeycomb tablets? (more)

We like to make fun of PlayStation Home, but it turns out if you put cool stuff there, people will log in. VentureBeat reports over 500,000 people showed up for the festivities, which included interviews and gameplay demonstrations of what was on offer, plus a live stream of Sony's press conference and a virtual recreation of its booth area.
