Microsoft says Android infringes on its patents, licenses HTC

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2613 days, 22 hours, 9 minutes ago
Wednesday, April 28, 2010 8:52:56 AM GMT
The lawyers up in Redmond seem to have been woken from their slumber with the sudden realization that -- oh look! -- Google's Android OS infringes on Microsoft's boatload of software patents. How specifically it does so is not identified, but Microsoft believes that elements from both the user interface and the underlying operating system are in violation of its rights. This is very much in keeping with the Windows maker's crusade to assert patent claims over Linux, which in the past has garnished it wit... (more)

The Hubble Space Telescope celebrates its 20th birthday today with the release of another photo that could come straight from the cover of a 1970s prog rock album. It shows a small portion of one of the largest known star-birth regions in the galaxy, the Carina Nebula. Three light-year-tall towers of cool hydrogen laced with dust rise from the wall of the nebula. (more)

iPad Camera Kit ships with USB headset and keyboard support

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2616 days, 1 hour, 44 minutes ago
Monday, April 26, 2010 5:17:37 AM GMT
Reports are coming in that the iPad Camera Connection Kit has finally shown up on a couple buyer doorsteps, and that the pair of white dongles may actually have been worth the wait. While one is a simple SD card adapter that adds one-touch image and video import (including RAW, complete with EXIF data) to the iPad, the second provides a USB port with some exciting new functionality. TUAW reports one reader could type on an iPad via USB keyboard, and those rumors about USB audio were true, (more)

QderoPateo Ouidoo to pack 26-core chip, looks like Palm Pre and Windows Phone 7 love child

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2616 days, 1 hour, 45 minutes ago

Really now? KIRFing a phone and a UI is one thing, but claiming to have a 26-core CPU (!) capable of 8-gigaflop (!) floating point operation -- or the equivalent of four iPads combined, apparently -- is one helluva stretch for a smartphone. This is apparently how awesome the QderoPateo Ouidoo will be. According to the launch event at the Shanghai World Expo on Friday, the too-good-to-be-true Divinitus CPU will help power the Ouidoo OS's augmented reality articulated naturality apps and 3D social-networ... Sony Dash spotted on shelf at Best Buy a few days early

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2616 days, 1 hour, 48 minutes ago
Monday, April 26, 2010 5:13:58 AM GMT
Now, what do you know about that? Our very own Chris Ziegler stopped into Best Buy (undoubtedly right after leaving CB2) and spotted something we didn't expect to see just yet... the Sony Dash. That's right, the Dash - which is available for pre-order but wasn't supposed to hit retail until April 29th -- is already on the shelf. Now, there was only one unit available and it was just squeezed in between some other wares, so we're not sure if it was put out by accident or what, but if you're really dying t... (more)

Google, Broadcom close to enabling 802.11n on Nexus One?

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2618 days, 11 hours, 1 minute ago

We need a name for this whole drama -- we like "n-Gate," but it's a little too close to N-Gage for comfort. Anyhow, you might recall that Google briefly listed 802.11n support in the Nexus One around the time of its release, then wiped all mention of it only to have iFixit's teardown reveal on no uncertain terms that the Broadcom-sourced wireless chipset was definitely capable of rocking it. YouTube rental selection expanded; sadly, most films still lack explosions

Are you looking for yet another way to stream Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired? Netflix and iTunes not doing it for you? Apparently YouTube's first, tentative step into on-demand rentals (some sort of Sundance Film Festival cross-promotion early this year) went well enough, and the company's started offering an extended range of movie and TV episodes for your viewing pleasure. Depending on the flick, anywhere between $.99 and $3.99 will get you 48 hours access, paid through Google Check-Out. (more)

MSI's gaming laptops have looked the same for years, but we aren't going to judge. As Mother always told us, it's what's inside that counts, and the new GX640 -- now stateside after a two month vacation in Europe -- is quite the upgrade. That familiar red-and-black chassis now houses a 2.26GHz Core i5-540M alongside 4GB of DDR3 memory, and the 1680 x 1050 LCD display is driven by a Mobility Radeon HD 5850 for mondo graphical performance. 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, a six-cell battery and a 500GB, 7200RPM HDD r... HD 101: 3D FAQ

While not everyone is sold on 3D at home yet -- or even in the theater -- most still have at least a few questions, and in the past year or so we've heard 'em all. So we figured we might as well share all the questions and the answers in one easy to read 3D FAQ. This is by no means comprehensive, but thanks to the wonders of the internet if we missed something it isn't too late to ask in the comments and watch in wonder as the post magically gets updated. Who Has Fastest, Cheapest Internet in the World?

Despite how often we hear that the U.S. lags behind other countries in terms of internet speed (which is still true), the fastest internet in the world, according to a report from Akamai Technologies, is in Berkeley, California at an average speed of 18.7Mbps. In fact, the second and third fastest internet offerings in the world are also in the U.S., in Chapel Hill, NC (average speed: 17.5Mbps) and Stanford, Calif. (average speed: 17.0Mbps) Of course, the obvious linkage there is that the internet is tie... (more)

Google vs. Apple: Battle of the Copycats

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2620 days, 11 hours, 9 minutes ago
Wednesday, April 21, 2010 7:52:17 PM GMT
So there you have it. Google will release its own tablet to steal a piece of the iPad pie. Lately, it seems, Google puts quite a bit of effort into annoying Apple. Conceivably, Google has already become the new Microsoft by trying to be everything to everyone and this upcoming tablet may just be another example of how Google is much more a content provider than a hardware company. But there is also a real chance that Google can succeed and beat Apple’s iPad—the iPad isn’t as new and magical as Apple clai... (more)

Of course, we've been wearing ours like this since day one, but it's always nice to see a trend catch on. Let's just hope no one tries to steal this guy's iPad. We all know how that can end. (more)
