Panasonic's DMC-GF1 / GH1 / G1 firmware updates improve autofocus performance

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2712 days, 19 hours, 50 minutes ago
Wednesday, April 21, 2010 7:47:36 PM GMT
Curious timing, no? Nary a fortnight after Olympus announced an autofocus-related firmware update for its line of Micro Four Thirds cameras (the PEN E-P1, E-P2 and E-PL1), along comes Panasonic with an all-too-similar round of firmware fixes for their own MFT range. Slated to hit the interwebs on May 10th, a trio of new updates will purportedly bring improved autofocus performance with third-party lenses as well as recognition of the new 14-42mm kit zoom to the DMC-GF1, DMC-GH1 and DMC-G1. We're also to... (more)

Thieves snag iPad from buyer, yank a finger off while they're at it

We'll be honest with you -- it literally pains us to write this. If you're the queasy type, we'd probably suggest scrolling on down and continuing about your day. For the hardcore still with us, the story goes a little something like this: a Denver-area man headed out to his local Apple store to pick up an iPad for a colleague (read: not even for himself), and in an interview, he admits to not even really understanding the fascination with Apple's new product. iPad delays are hitting everyone, but those in the U.S. are still getting first pick at all the new iPad models. With the Wi-Fi model already at retailers, the next new roll out for Apple will be the iPad 3G, which will accept a Micro-SIM card for contract-free 3G options from AT&T. (more)

Droid Incredible review

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2714 days, 22 hours, 14 minutes ago
Monday, April 19, 2010 5:23:59 PM GMT
At this point, the HTC Incredible should seem like pretty familiar territory to our readers. We first caught wind of the device in a ROM leak back in December of 2009, and shortly thereafter saw lots of little snippets on the phone that made it clear it was headed our way. Of course, it's a potent combination that's been put together here -- an HTC-made, Verizon-locked device sporting a 1GHz Snapdragon CPU, 8GB of internal storage, 748MB of ROM, a microSD slot (with support for up to 32GB cards), an 8 m... What's With All the Android Phones? Here's How to Pick Just One

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2718 days, 7 hours, 13 minutes ago
Friday, April 16, 2010 8:25:10 AM GMT
It's a near-weekly occurrence: HTC, or Motorola, or someone releases a brand-new Android phone. There are a ton of them! But really, there are only a few worth buying. Here are the best Android phones on each carrier. Choosing an Android phone is just like choosing any other cellphone, except easier: You're already onboard with the Android operating system, you're prepared to shell out for a data plan, and probably have a more specific idea of what you want in a phone than your average buyer. Accordingl... (more)

HTC Droid Incredible officially official for Verizon, April 29 for $200 (updated with a live shot!)

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2718 days, 7 hours, 36 minutes ago
Friday, April 16, 2010 8:02:27 AM GMT
Though some information leaked out of Verizon's pipes yesterday, HTC just got really real with the Droid Incredible at the 99% Conference in New York today. Specs are pretty much what we expected: Android 2.1 with Sense, an 8 megapixel cam, 1GHz Snapdragon (not the underclocked core we'd heard rumored before, thankfully), WiFi, and a 3.7-inch WVGA AMOLED display. Basically, this unit is a Sense-ified HTC Nexus One with an up-spec'd camera and a penchant for Verizon's airwaves -- and for a whole lotta An... (more)

Congress outlaws all Caller ID spoofing (VoIP too)

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2719 days, 6 hours, 47 minutes ago
Thursday, April 15, 2010 8:50:39 AM GMT
The House has passed the "Truth in Caller ID Act of 2010" (PDF), which does exactly what its name would lead you to believe. Under the bill, it becomes illegal "to cause any caller ID service to transmit misleading or inaccurate caller ID information, with the intent to defraud and deceive." The bill maintains an exemption for blocking one's own outgoing caller ID information, and law enforcement isn't affected. (more)

Turn Your Droid Into a Portable Gaming System

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2719 days, 7 hours, 19 minutes ago
Thursday, April 15, 2010 8:19:21 AM GMT
Alright let's face it: while Verizon promoted the Motorola Droid as the "iPhone Killer," the Android platform so far hasn't offered much in the way of gaming. The Android Market isn't clean and tidy either, making it difficult to find something exceptional and "hard core." Really good games are hard to come by, and because the Market is addressed to multiple devices, fumbling with a game designed for a smartphone keyboard can get downright annoying. (more)

Droid Incredible specs confirmed on Verizon site

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2719 days, 7 hours, 26 minutes ago
Thursday, April 15, 2010 8:12:15 AM GMT
Yes, good people of Engadgetland, we finally have an official spec sheet for the eagerly awaited Incredible handset. A 3.7-inch OLED touchscreen leads the way, with an 800 x 480 resolution, which will offer the full Google Experience on Android version 2.1. That sounds remarkably like a refashioned Nexus One to us, even down to the 1GHz Snapdragon chip inside, but where the Droid Incredible differs is in its inclusion of Sense UI (à la the Desire) and an 8 megapixel autofocusing camera. We're also seei... (more)

PhoneGap framework fine for App Store development, sez Apple

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2719 days, 7 hours, 28 minutes ago
Thursday, April 15, 2010 8:10:36 AM GMT
Now, we've all been concerned about recent updates to the iPhone dev agreement -- you haven't been sleeping and your parents are, quite frankly, worried for your sanity. And it's a heady subject: "what is the fate of PhoneGap in the wake of the iPhone OS 4 beta SDK?" Well, worry no more, little one -- it seems that Jesse Macfadyen, a contributor to the project, pinged Apple to make sure that users of the mobile development platform wouldn't find their apps rejected simply for using the tool. 3DTV is Not for the Pregnant, Young, Old, or Drunk

Now the 3D experience is hitting the home theater big time with all major TV makers putting out 3D HDTVs this year – but they're not for everyone, especially not children, the elderly, sleepy people, pregnant women and drunks. HTC 'continues to assess' developing its own smartphone OS, Palm says 'hey, assess this'

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2720 days, 6 hours, 25 minutes ago

Failing a Palm acquisition, there might still be justification for HTC to build out its own software platform for many of the same reasons that buying Palm would make sense -- the company's getting bigger and more important to the market by the day, after all, and being left at the mercy of Google and Microsoft to produce cohesive platforms of their own might not sit well with Chou's team ad infinitum. FCC slams Verizon CEO on "baffling" spectrum comments

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2724 days, 7 hours, 50 minutes ago
Saturday, April 10, 2010 7:48:07 AM GMT
Good news, smartphone fans. It turns out there may not be a looming spectrum crisis after all. That's according to Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg, who suggested to the Council on Foreign Relations on Tuesday that it's time to relax about this matter. "If video takes off, could we have a spectrum shortage in five or seven years?" Seidenberg asked out loud. "Could be, but I think that technology will tend to solve these issues. And I think, as I said, I happen to think that we'll advance fast enough that som... (more)

Where is the Asus Eee Keyboard? The Taiwanese computer company still says that it is on its way, despite almost a year's worth of delays. Last month we heard that the new date given to the innovative PC-in-a-keyboard product is April, which would be the month that we're currently cruising through. Asus now only has three weeks to make good on that promise, but we're feeling optimistic this time. (more)
