Microsoft and Amazon Cloud Services Struck by Lightning

Amazon said that the lightning hit a transformer near Dublin, Ireland just before 8 p.m. local time on Sunday and caused enough disruption to send its servers offline. Within two hours, the company provided first details about the service disruption and began restoring server instances again after three hours. The company told its users that it would need 24 to 48 hours to get all services back online. (more)

Stanford Engineers Create a Robot Jedi

In what could be one of the coolest classes offered at Stanford University, 'Experimental Robotics' students have created the world's worst Jedi. Okay it isn't exactly an entire robot, or an entire Jedi, but the robot arm these students designed is capable of engaging in a foam lightsaber battle. (more)

CPU Wars: AMD A6-3650 review round-up

As many of our more tech-savvy readers surely know, this week saw the launch of AMD's latest salvo in the CPU wars -- the Fusion-based Llano APU line. Only the A6-3650 and the A8-3850 have been released so far, with the other chips slated for release later this year. The 3650 has a quad-core, 2.6 GHZ CPU and a Radeon HD 6530D GPU clocked at 443MHz. The 3850 is about $15 more and sports 2.9GHz CPU clock and an HD 6550D at 600MHz. At that range, Intel's main competitors are the I3-2105 and 2100. (more)

Schmitz, who was known as Kimble during his hacking times and recently changed his last name to Dotcom, has been convicted for multiple crimes such as racketeering and insider trading in the early years of the past decade. He is now in the news again as the possible owner of Megaupload. The file sharing service has been targeted by Perfect 10, which has filed multiple and not very successful copyright infringements against sites which have been used to share its copyrighted erotic images (more)

South Korean Scientists Create Glowing Dog

On Wednesday, Scientists from Seoul National University in South Korea announced that they have created a glowing dog while utilizing a cloning technique designed to find cures for diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. Pictured about is the team's genetically modified female beagle, Tegon, which was born in 2009 and was found to glow in a fluorescent green color while under ultraviolet light. (more)

Acer's 7-inch Tablet Launching in August at $300

Its been a long, long time since we first clapped eyes on Acer's Iconia Tab A100 tablet. The company unveiled the slate last fall, at a special event in NYC, and showed it off again at CES. It was scheduled for launch in May but delayed due to compatibility issues with Honeycomb. Since then, Acer hasn't exactly been itching to tell us when the 7-inch A100 is going to hit stores. (more)
