The past week Inhabitat saw solar-powered transportation soar into space as Japan successfully unfurled the world's first solar sail aboard its Ikaros spacecraft. We continued our transportation coverage by taking a took a look at a futuristic plant-powered photosynthetic concept car that seats riders within an enclosed jungle canopy. However if the Inhabitat editors commuted to work, it would probably be via these amazing solar-powered shrub cars! (more)

AT&T breach reveals 114,000 iPad owners' email addresses, including some elite customers

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2744 days, 2 hours, 41 minutes ago

Uh oh. According to Valleywag, an AT&T security breach led to the exposure of 114,000 email addresses (and associated SIM / ICC identifiers) belonging to Apple iPad owners. A group of hackers calling themselves Goatse Security (be careful looking that one up) figured out a number of ICC-IDs and ran a script on AT&T's site through a faked iPad UserAgent, which would then return the associated addresses. Some of those affected were actually quite big names, including the CEOs of The New York Times ... (more)

HTC EVO 4G sold out pretty much everywhere

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2745 days, 4 hours ago
Wednesday, June 09, 2010 6:15:50 AM GMT
It's being widely reported that the HTC EVO 4G is sold out all over the US -- at brick and mortars and online. And while we can't 100 percent certain that Sprint doesn't have a few hidden away in some of the less traversed pockets of this great land, the fact that they're selling out shouldn't come as a huge shocker. The phone overtook the Palm Pre to become Sprint's best-selling launch day ever, though we don't have an actual number of units moved. Be sure to let us know in comments if your local store... (more)

Japanese Surgeon Uses an iPad in Operation

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2748 days, 1 hour, 50 minutes ago

The iPad was just launched in Japan last week but one surgeon is already making use of the device in his operating room. Though it's unclear exactly how he's using the iPad, the surgeons in the video (seen here on Wired UK) pinch, zoom and drag their fingers across the screen, examining what appears to be the patient's insides or reference photos. Abraham Dickan, 79, was a very unhappy AT&T customer. Dickan had reportedly been abusive and angry toward employees at the New York Mills store on several occasions before. He had even had police reports filed against him for brandished weapons at the staff there, though Lt. Troy Little says he had no priors. (more)

Motorola Shadow slithers into Verizon's inventory database as MB810

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2755 days, 3 hours, 31 minutes ago
Sunday, May 30, 2010 6:44:38 AM GMT
If the whole "smoke -> fire" adage proves true once more, it's looking like Verizon loyalists can expect to see a Shadow at least a few milliseconds before a CDMA iPhone. Following up on months of leaks and rumors, we've got yet another snippet of evidence pointing towards a VZW release of the so-called Motorola Shadow. Spotted here in the carrier's inventory database, the MB810 moniker aligns perfectly with that WiFi certification we saw earlier in the month. Combine that with the fact that this is defi... (more)

New Skype 2.0 app for the iPhone allows voice calls over 3G

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2755 days, 3 hours, 31 minutes ago
Sunday, May 30, 2010 6:43:59 AM GMT
Plenty of other VoIP apps have managed to work in this functionality since Apple / AT&T started allowing it last year, but the official Skype app has been a notable holdout. Now, two months after Skype started doing 3G calls on Android with Verizon, there's a 2.0 version of the app for iPhone that brings voice calls over 3G at last. Mobile iPhone calls are free until August, after which you'll need a "mobile subscription." We're testing out the app as we write this and it seems to work about as well ... (more)

This Could Be The Most Portable Computer Ever

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2756 days, 2 hours, 38 minutes ago

Before anything can claim the "most" title, it has to exist. The eRoll remains a figment of designer Dragan Trencevski's imagination, and the concept isn't exactly new. Anyone remember that Mars movie Red Planet (the one with Carrie-Anne Moss)? Such a contraption was used as a portable X-Ray to determine the injuries on a felled astronaut, with the built-in touchscreen allowing easy manipulation. (more)

Time Warner and NBC Serve Up a Slap for Apple

When the iPad launched, Steve Jobs announced that it would not support Flash and many sites and newspaper publishers rushed to create either an iPad friendly website or a separate app for the Apple tablet. However, despite the fact that some were more than willing to dump Flash for Apple, other companies have no intention of doing anything of the sort. (more)

If you thought that Apple's foray into the world of home entertainment died with the last iteration of the Apple TV, you're quite wrong. A tip we've received -- which has been confirmed by a source very close to Apple -- details the outlook for the next version of the Apple TV, and it's a doozy. According to our sources, this project has been in the works long before Google announced its TV solution, and it ties much more closely into Apple's mobile offerings. The new architecture of the device will be b... (more)

Motorola Droid 2 found in Verizon system, keyboard makes an online cameo? (update: specs)

While we've got no way to confirm at the moment, here's some proverbial food for thought. A friendly reader last night published in our comment thread for the two rumored Verizon-bound Motorola devices with the above picture (subtitles added by us), claiming the bottom image is the Droid 2's upgraded QWERTY keyboard. The story goes that his friend had one but no other information is currently available -- the font on the keys is identical, and the mic icon on the bottom left is distinctively Android. If ... If you have a pet, chances are your vet has talked to you about microchipping. For a nominal fee, the vet will implant a small chip, about the size of a grain of rice, into the skin on the back of the cat or dog's neck. Each RFID chip carries a unique serial number and if the animal gets lost, a vet, pound or animal shelter can scan it and find out the name and phone number of the person attached to that serial number. It's a great idea but the technology has come a long way in the last few years. So muc... (more)

Intel Debuts Unlocked CPUs; Win a CyberPower PC

We've been overclocking our systems for as long as we can remember. Intel hasn't always been the biggest supporter of such habits, but that changes today in a big way as the chipmaker has today made official the multiplier unlocked Intel Core i7-875K and i5-655K processors. At $342 and $216, respectively, they're attractive options for those who think running at stock speeds is just silly. (more)

When the iPad bandwagon was launched in late January, ABC and Netflix quickly jumped onboard with tailor-made apps, while CBS and others started transitioning their content to HTML5-compliant formats, all in the name of not being left behind by the revolution. As it turns out, however, some content providers will be letting this ride pass them by, at least for the moment. The New York Post today reports that big media heavyweights Time Warner and NBC Universal have turned their noses up at the iPad's ... (more)

Here's the claimed technical details: 4.1-inch screen, TI OMAP 3630 processor (a 720MHz ARM Cortex A8), 8GB internal storage, 8 megapixel camera. For over thirty years the computer mouse ruled over the kingdom of computer navigation. Despite losing its rubber ball and cord over the years, the peripheral lived a long, full life of being pushed across desks and tables getting the cursor where it needed to go. It died today from neglect as it was abandoned en masse for touchpads and touch-based computers. (more)
