posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2738 days, 5 hours, 49 minutes ago
Tuesday, May 25, 2010 6:59:55 AM GMT
We'd heard that the 2011 Audi A8 would be getting a UMTS modem in mid-2010 to help with things like Google Earth, and it looks like Audi has now delivered that and more -- it's just announced that the car is the first anywhere to be available with a factory-installed WLAN hotspot option. That will apparently let you either drop your SIM card into the car's on-board system or pair your phone with it via Bluetooth, and then share wireless internet access with up to eight WiFi-enabled devices at speeds up ... Yesterday Google announced it was teaming up with Intel, Sony and Logitech for a little venture called Google TV. Though Sony is to supply the televisions (and Intel the chips for those tellies), Logitech is supplying not only the remotes and keyboards but standalone companion boxes for those of us who don't feel like investing in a new TV just for Google. There's been rumors that Apple had ended its long-running of "Get a Mac" ad campaign ever since Justin "Mac" Long said he thought they might be done last month, and it looks like that's now finally been confirmed by Apple -- the company has pulled all the ads from its site and is instead redirecting folks to its new "Why You'll Love a Mac" page. J Allard leaving Microsoft over Courier axing?

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2741 days, 4 hours, 41 minutes ago
Saturday, May 22, 2010 8:08:13 AM GMT
Well, it looks like the Courier's demise could be having some far bigger implications for Microsoft than anyone had suspected. According to ZDNet's Mary Jo Foley, Microsoft's Chief Experience Officer and CTO for its Entertainment and Devices division, J Allard, has been on sabbatical from the company for the past short while and is "unlikely to return" (more)

HTC EVO 4G review

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2743 days, 5 hours, 15 minutes ago
Thursday, May 20, 2010 7:34:03 AM GMT
As a mobile platform, the EVO 4G's Android foundation is still an infant -- well, okay, perhaps it's a tweener -- but in its two-odd years in the public spotlight, the list of truly revolutionary devices to use it has been a significant one: the G1 for being the first to market; the Nexus One for ushering in a new (and subsequently killed) retail model; perhaps the CLIQ for introducing Motorola to the platform or the Droid for bringing the company some desperately needed, long overdue success. For the mo... (more)

Rejoice, oh Android lovers. Thy OS of choice has finally graduated to the point where its latest variant is also the most used -- a statistic that is likely to last for only a day given Google's intent to reveal Android 2.2, or Froyo, at its I/O conference tomorrow. (more)

MacBook refresh gets official with 10-hour battery

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2744 days, 7 hours, 23 minutes ago
Wednesday, May 19, 2010 5:25:45 AM GMT
Weird, but there it is, the leaked MacBook refresh is now official, on Tuesday, just as we thought. The 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo refresh with NVIDIA GeForce 320M graphics and longer 10-hour battery life (up from 7 hours) is sitting up, nice and pretty on Apple's very own store in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Germany, and a few other sites. It's still $999 making it a better deal for the moment than the similarly spec'd 13-inch MacBook Pro listing for $1,199. Expect it to go global shortly. A few more screengrabs after th... (more)

The battle for minds is well and truly on now, and if there was any doubt that Google and Adobe are cozying up together to take on Apple, let it now be extinguished. TechCrunch is reporting that the latest version of Android -- you know, the one with the 450 percent performance improvement and buttery smooth Flash playback -- will, upon updating, guide you to visit a selection of Flash-enabled websites. NVIDIA puts its Tegra 2 eggs in Android's basket, aims to topple Apple's A4

Microsoft's Kin One and Kin Two might not turn out to be the most auspicious devices for Tegra's debut in the smartphone arena, but NVIDIA seems to be learning from its mistakes. Admitting that the company committed too strongly to Microsoft with the first-gen iteration, Jen-Hsun Huang has now said that the second generation of Tegra will look to Android devices first and foremost. LimeWire Found Guilty of Copyright Infringement

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2749 days, 17 hours, 54 minutes ago
Thursday, May 13, 2010 6:54:55 PM GMT
It's a bad day for the file-sharing service LimeWire, as U.S. District Judge Kimba Wood of the Southern District of New York found its operators liable for copyright infringement. The ruling came after the RIAA filed a claim that Lime Group and its founder Mark Gorton committed copyright infringement, induced copyright infringement, and engaged in unfair competition based on the copyrighted content found on the peer-to-peer network. Google has a habit of giving future versions really tasty sounding codenames. Be it Cupcake, Éclair or Froyo, they all sound delicious. However, Froyo (that’s Android 2.2) is sounding more and more delicious by the day because when it hits my Nexus One, Android will be 450 percent faster than it is now. (more)

Android 2.2 Does USB Tethering, Wi-Fi Hot Spot

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2749 days, 18 hours, 11 minutes ago
Thursday, May 13, 2010 6:38:08 PM GMT
The next version of Google's Android platform, codenamed Froyo, looks to kick Apple where it hurts. While we've already learned that v2.2 brings native Flash support, more memory, and apparently a huge 450-percent boost in overall performance (which 2.1 was supposed to offer but apparently did the opposite), the next spike in the groin is the platform's ability to not only provide native USB tethering support, but act as a portable Wi-Fi hotspot. If you're reading Engadget today (and let's be honest, you're reading it right now), then you might have noticed that Adobe has launched a pretty full-force campaign to call out Apple on its anti-Flash mission. If you don't know what we're talking about, it's the advertisements that start with "We [heart] Apple." (more)

Plastic Logic plans 2012 launch for color e-paper display

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2749 days, 18 hours, 37 minutes ago

E-readers as a whole best be watching their backs (or planning a wave of new functions, one), but it's safe to say that having color displays would give 'em a leg-up on the retina-killing, battery-draining LCD-based alternatives. Plastic Logic is still working to get its first e-reader (the decidedly not color QUE, for those curious) into the paws of consumers, but already the outfit is planning for the next big thing. (more)

In a post on the Hulu blog (which has curiously since been pulled, though it remains in the RSS feed), Hulu's VP of Product Eugene Wei took a moment for an "aside on HTML5," in which he said that while Hulu continues to monitor developments on HTML5, (more)

Man Found Guilty for Tweeting Airport Bomb Threat

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2751 days, 17 hours, 29 minutes ago
Tuesday, May 11, 2010 7:20:30 PM GMT
Back in January, a man was arrested for tweeting about blowing up an airport. Though it sounds serious when you put it that way, Paul Chambers was actually just kidding. His tweet, "Robin Hood airport is closed. You've got a week and a bit to get your shit together, otherwise I'm blowing the airport sky high!!" was not meant to be taken seriously. It came from a guy who was worried that snow would affect his plans to take a trip to Ireland. However, Chambers soon realized how seriously his tweet was take... (more)

Sony turns VAIO P into world's most expensive PS3 keyboard

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2751 days, 18 hours, 4 minutes ago

Yesterday we told you what we thought about the new VAIO P, an $800 conversation piece of a netbook, and now Sony is giving potential owners something else to talk about. The little laptop has been granted "Remote Keyboard" functionality, turning it into a sort of giant economy sized version of the PlayStation 3 Wireless Keypad, a device we weren't particularly fond of when we first played with it way back in 2008.
