We've been intrigued by the Square Payment System since it first ditched its Squirrel costume back in 2009, and now it appears we're on the eve (or eve of the eve, or pretty close anyway) to its release for not only the iPhone, but for the iPad and for Android as well. (more)

Sony announces faster Memory Stick Pro-HG Duo HX, children's eyes light up with glee

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2575 days, 6 hours, 46 minutes ago

Can you handle an even faster Memory Stick? It's the Memory Stick Pro-HG Duo HX series, which Sony is speeding up but, curiously, isn't tacking any more random letters to the already ridiculous name. The cards offer maximum capacity of 32GB and transfer rates of 30MB/s, and while Sony doesn't indicate whether that's a read or a write speed (we're guessing read) they should handily out-class even high-class SD-based storage options. FCC task force seeks to squash 'bill shock,' give you the 411 on impending overages

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2575 days, 6 hours, 54 minutes ago

Call us crazy, but it seems as if the FCC has been earning its keep of late, and the toiling continues today with an effort meant to address "bill shock." For those unaware, bill shock is a phenomena on par with bitter beer face in terms of significance, and it typically occurs when you accidentally roam internationally, text well beyond your monthly limit or burn through your minutes within the first week of your billing period. Apple promises to fix iPad WiFi issues in future software update

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2575 days, 7 hours ago
Tuesday, May 11, 2010 6:26:37 PM GMT
Not satisfied with Apple's previous "fixes" for those pesky WiFi issues with the iPad? Then it looks like the folks in Cupertino have you covered, or will soon -- the company recently updated its support document on the issue to say that "Apple will also address remaining Wi-Fi connectivity issues with a future iPad software update." Interestingly, Apple also now suggests adjusting the screen brightness if you're experiencing the problem, which is a fix that was previously discovered by some users on the... (more)

Apple starts rolling out international iPad pre-orders -- Engadget

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2576 days, 19 hours, 26 minutes ago
Monday, May 10, 2010 6:01:16 AM GMT
What's that, you say? The iPad pre-order button is now propagating itself over on Apple's global assortment of online stores? The Australian retail is already taking your hard-earned change, while we just saw first-hand the UK variant go down, go up with an iPad pre-order icon on the front page, then subsequently hidden again behind a yellow sticky note within minutes of this writing. We imagine the rest of the stores will be following suit (if they haven't already). (more)

Olympus dishes silver PEN E-P2 Micro Four Thirds camera -- Engadget

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2576 days, 19 hours, 29 minutes ago
Monday, May 10, 2010 5:57:38 AM GMT
Look, we're not saying Olympus' original all-black PEN E-P2 had no retro whatsoever in its blood, but you'll be hard-pressed to convince us that this newer, silver-er model doesn't have a whole lot more. Nearly six months after the (admittedly overpriced) Micro Four Thirds camera got pushed through the ringer, Olympus has decided that the world needs a second color option, though outside of the hue, there's no difference whatsoever between the two models. Magic Mouse syncs with jailbroken iPad, enabling cursory cursor control (video)

The pun is so obvious it practically insults your intelligence, but we just can't help ourselves -- the iPad has just gotten a little more magical. Using the BTstack application that brought Bluetooth mouse support to iPhone, enterprising individuals discovered the same technique works on a jailbroken iPad as well, and hooked up Apple's own Magic Mouse to show it off to the world. Mind you, while this implementation does look quite useful, we do detect the barest hint of lag -- so it may not be your wea... (more)

Current T-Mobile customers having hard time upgrading to HTC HD2 (updated with statement)

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2578 days, 18 hours, 31 minutes ago
Saturday, May 08, 2010 6:56:12 AM GMT
First, the good news: T-Mobile's HD2 is in stock online and apparently at many corporate-owned retail locations. Now, the bad: the carrier seems to be putting these things on lockdown right now, only offering them to new customers signing up for a fresh contract. This is a tactic T-Mobile has applied in the past, so we're not terribly surprised to see them do it here, too -- but it's still a disappointment, especially considering that the phone has been out for a few weeks now. Is the iPad killing netbook sales? Probably not

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2579 days, 16 hours, 49 minutes ago
Friday, May 07, 2010 8:37:44 AM GMT
Inexpensive, compact netbooks were all the rage during the recent economic downturn, and the product segment enjoyed explosive growth over that period. However, that growth rate started falling heavily at the end of 2009; in April 2010, netbook sales only grew a mere 5 percent. Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty says the iPad is to blame for the stalled growth, but it seems more likely that netbooks have merely saturated their niche in the market. (more)

Microsoft Patch Tuesday for May 2010: two bulletins

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2579 days, 16 hours, 51 minutes ago
Friday, May 07, 2010 8:35:34 AM GMT
According to the Microsoft Security Response Center, Microsoft will issue two Security Bulletins addressing two vulnerabilities on Tuesday. It will also host a webcast to address customer questions about the bulletins the following day (May 12 at 11:00 am PST, if you're interested). Both of the vulnerabilities are rated "Critical," and they earned their rating through a remote code execution impact, meaning a hacker could potentially gain control of an infected machine. At least one of the two patches ... (more)

The plan is expected to change the way the FCC defines broadband without adding additional regulations, forcing phone companies, wireless carriers, and cable companies to treat all Internet traffic equally, and not block websites or throttle connections. Google Chrome: faster than a flying potato

Google's never been shy to make claims that Chrome is the fastest browser on the planet, but it's truly pulled out all the stops to drive that point home for its latest beta. Rather than rely on some simple benchmarks, Google decided to test Chome against some other things that are fast -- namely, a potato cannon, sound waves, and lightning. We won't spoil all the surprise for you, but you can rest assured that Chrome comes out looking pretty good, and that everything else gets a little messy. Head on pa... (more)

Apple to face antitrust inquiry over iPhone coding restrictions?

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2582 days, 18 hours ago

Apple's decision to block third-party toolkits and middleware -- particularly Flash -- from being used to develop iPhone and iPad apps has certainly prompted a fair amount of debate around the web, and now it sounds like Steve and the gang might face some even harsher scrutiny: a single-sourced piece in the New York Post reports that the Federal Trade Commission and the Department of Justice are currently tussling over which agency should be tasked with a potential antitrust inquiry into the matter (more)

Well that was fast. That ABC Player for iPad update we heard about this morning has already made its way through Apple's approval process and is now available for download. Orientation lock is now, erm, on lock controls are more responsive, but most importantly, (lower bitrate) 3G streaming is now a go. With that settled, now no bus ride will ever get between you and an island chockfull of confusion and smoke monsters. (more)
