Carol Bartz has only been the CEO of Yahoo! for about a year but she's made the headlines countless times during her first 12 months at the helm. Yesterday was just another example of that as she told the BBC that Google would be in trouble if it didn't diversify its business. (more)

Sunday, May 02, 2010 7:20:10 PM GMT
While Apple has been vocal about its push towards using HTML5 for video playback and leaving Flash out in the cold, Microsoft has quietly been keeping a similar stance. Microsoft GM for Internet Explorer, Dean Hachamovitch, posted a note on the MSDN detailing what the plans are for browser video formats in IE9. Interestingly, Microsoft agrees with Apple, as it feels that the "The future of the web is HTML5." (more)

HTC Incredible suffering random reboots for Tar Heel fans and Duke devotees?

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2760 days, 17 hours, 40 minutes ago
Sunday, May 02, 2010 7:13:53 PM GMT
Well now this is a bit of an odd story, but we've seen enough reports to think that it is fully legit. HTC Incredible owners in and around the great state of North Carolina, particularly those in north-central portion (the Triad) are reporting that their phones are rebooting all on their own with alarming regularity. Many have tried new phones, combinations of wireless settings, and other remediations only to find the problem still occurring just as frequently as before. (more)

Hey, remember how Microsoft released a very limited version of the Windows Phone 7 binaries for developers, and then it took about 34 seconds for someone to unlock them to open up all their hidden goodness? Well, MS has just the delivered an updated set of tools for developers to help them get a little closer to making millions on the Maketplace, and yet again it took no time at all for that release to be unlocked This time there are a few new goodies to take a look at and if you'd like to take a peek, ... HP Slate killed? Rumor mill says 'yes'

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2762 days, 17 hours, 16 minutes ago
Friday, April 30, 2010 7:37:50 PM GMT
Last night TechCrunch reported that, according to an unnamed "source briefed on the matter," HP had stopped development of the Slate in its tracks, killing off the project entirely. Why? Well, according to the source, HP isn't thrilled with Windows 7's performance on the tablet. The Slate -- which was officially unveiled in January by Steve Ballmer himself -- had a rumored price of $549, and was supposedly launching in June. So, what should we make of all this? (more)

Confirmed: LG's Moorestown-based GW990 won't be made

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2762 days, 17 hours, 17 minutes ago
Friday, April 30, 2010 7:36:30 PM GMT
Considering the almost complete absence of love in the commercial marketplace for Moorestown and Moblin -- and the fact that there's no sign of MeeGo building serious momentum just yet -- we're sure that Intel would've just loved for the drop-dead-sexy GW990 to serve as the platform's crown jewel for 2010. Unfortunately, that's not going to happen, because we've just been able to confirm that the 4.8-inch beast (and potential Dell Mini 5 foil) has been wiped off the product roadmap. (more)

Objects in Chinavasion's Video Glasses may be cheaper than they appear

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2764 days, 6 hours, 34 minutes ago

Certainly, if we're going to live in a future where console jockeys and other cyberpunk-types run amok in virtual reality dreamscapes, we're going to have to start seeing more cut-rate video eyewear. For most cowboys, dropping $800 on something by Vuzix is just not an option. Luckily, the gang at Chinavasion have recently sourced some generic, relatively inexpensive "Video Eyeglasses." Priced at $135 (with the cost dropping when you buy at bulk) these bad boys feature a simulated display size of forty i... (more)

8-bit arcade guitar sounds (and looks) like a little piece of nerd heaven

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2764 days, 6 hours, 36 minutes ago

The hand built, 8-bit "arcade guitar" that you see above is the result of a DIY senior project, and it's a pretty cool accomplishment. There's not a ton of detail about how it was constructed, but we know that it's got an FPGA (field-programmable gate array) for logic and function, strings and a joystick for adjusting the pitch, and it also boasts selectable waves and save banks. Most importantly, however, the final product sounds really, really good -- and we'd advise you to check the video below. (more)

In what should not come as much of a surprise, Microsoft has reaffirmed its belief that Natal will be useful in everyday, tech-oriented life, not just for playing videogames. Speaking to executives in Columbia this week (talk about an all-time alibi), CEO Steve Ballmer praised the device for its abilities. "The technology actually is very general purpose, and we'll see come into the rest of our lives pretty soon," Ballmer said, after mentioning how Natal was, in his mind, "the most exciting product" the ... Two Android devices, the HTC Dream and HTC Magic, collectively represented 96% of Android traffic in September 2009. Seven months later, 11 devices represented 96% of Android traffic," A... (more)

Sony teases VAIO Ultra Mobile, Clippy chuffed

Interesting. Sony's teasing a new VAIO "Ultra Mobile" in Japan. No idea what this could be: refreshed VAIO X lappie, VAIO P netbook, or a new take on its venerable VAIO UX micro PC? With Intel's Moorestown just around the corner we're leaning towards the latter, hoping for it anyway -- Sony doesn't tease just any old product without good reason. Oh, wait. (more)
