Ubisoft confirms 2013 release for Watch Dogs

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1778 days, 8 hours, 14 minutes ago
Wednesday, November 07, 2012 10:00:40 AM GMT
In a call with investors today, CEO Yves Guillermot confirmed that Ubisoft will release Watch Dogs in 2013, including it in a list of the publisher's upcoming AAA titles. This is the second time we've heard that the game will release next year, albeit this serves as a far more legitimate assertion than the earlier tweeted-then-deleted comment from Ubisoft. (more)

When LittleBigPlanet Karting was announced, the first thing I felt was pity. Pity for ModNation Racers, the build-everything karting title that Sony presented under the same "Play Create Share" banner as Media Molecule's critically acclaimed series. An LBP kart racer renders ModNation obsolete. (more)

The Paper Mario series has long followed an odd trajectory, filling in the holes left in the wake of new trends on Nintendo consoles. The original N64 title and its GameCube sequel worked to satiate both fans of 2D Mario games and fan of turn-baser RPGs, who both felt a bit left behind on those two consoles. If you hated polygon-based Mario and his adventures, and/or felt lost and alone after Square stopped publishing the numbered Final Fantasy games on Nintendo consoles, you could always turn to Paper M... For over a decade, the Halo series was in the hands of development studio Bungie. In that time, they pioneered two generations of console shooters and created a phenomenon that has generated over $3 billion in sales. Bungie has since moved on from the series that helped establish the Xbox, handing the responsibility over to the new house of Halo, 343 Industries. (more)

The biggest problem with the PlayStation Vita is that many titles don't quite "get" it. Either they go in deep with all manner of touchscreen hybridization at the cost of player comfort, or they concentrate so hard on providing a full console experience they forget people don't always have over an hour to spare when playing on the road. Following the messages hidden within his genetic memory, series protagonist Desmond and the team of Assassins supporting him have found the location of ruins left behind by the precursor race which once held dominion over the Earth. Now, they are in a desperate search to learn the secrets of this place, hoping to discover what happened to that lost race and if what they left behind might save humanity from an impending solar event threatening to destroy the world as we know it. But don't get mad if you find that I've intentionally given up placement in the next challenge to screw you over. Don't be mad if I'm sitting in hiding at the apex of the next turn, finger on the gas trigger, waiting to jump out and T-bone you into a wall to take you out. Don't be mad if I follow you around in every race, trying to bash you into other cars. I'm going to be everywhere you are, at all times. Watch your back. (more)

Of Orcs and Men is one such game where a name says so much. It's a fantasy game, that much is obvious. Its literary allusion points toward strong focus on narrative. The cultured tone of the moniker suggests a developer with something to say, something worth hearing. (more)

The Unfinished Swan is set in the remains of a long-abandoned kingdom, once under the rule of an egocentric and selfish king. Having painted most of the realm bright white, for no colors were deemed good enough for his creation, Unfinished Swan's world is made of bold shapes, defined mostly by shadow and paint thrown around by the player. Meet Melissa. She's a forty-year-old mom who has recently become hooked on DragonVale, a free-to-play iOS game. She is what social game analysts call a whale. No, this isn't a comment on her physical stature or deep, raspy cafeteria-lady voice. Whale refers to the type of player she is, financially speaking. Whales are a very good thing for developers, as they are the ones that make the most and largest purchases in free-to-play games. (more)

Super Hexagon is a game that makes your eyeballs feel like they're being forcibly twisted against your will while still in their sockets. It is a game that makes your brain feel like it's being torn up and stitched back together by a drunken doctor in a back alley. It will even, at times, make you question whether you're enjoying the experience or it's simply the pulsating visuals sending you subliminal messages that trick you into revelry. (more)

MMO Week in Review: PAX Prime 2012

NCsoft dominated the MMO headlines this week, and not necessarily the way it might prefer. While the studio ushered in the launch of ArenaNet's Guild Wars 2, it also announced it plans to shut down beloved superhero MMO City of Heroes and developer Paragon Studios in November. And though Guild Wars 2 can claim a million prepurchase copies sold and a 400,000-person concurrency peak, it's also been hampered by a hastily implemented new email authentication system, phishing scams, and exploits, not to menti... Apple awarded $1.05 billion in Samsung infringement case

After a short three days of deliberation, a California court has found that Samsung infringed on six of the seven Apple patents originally brought to the case. The result? Apple was awarded over $1 billion in damages. In most of the cases the jury found that the infringement was willful. Just about every Samsung device out there was found to infringe on Apple patents in some way. (more)

In sixth grade, I would wake up for school at 5:30 AM, but then I started getting up at 4:30 just to get a couple rounds in before class. Call it dedication or a sickening obsession, but I was hooked on CS (nevermind my neighbor who broke into my house to play while I slept!) It was more than a game. It was my social hub, my iTunes visualizer, and my brief entryway into game design (which didn’t go very far.) It is and remains a standout multiplayer shooter that paved the way for things to come with Call... (more)

Transformers: War for Cybertron was one of my top multiplayer games of 2010. Something about it just worked surprisingly well, and High Moon Studios deserved oodles of kudos for providing the Transformers license with an original, structurally sound, vastly entertaining game that respected the franchise in a way other games (and certain movies) had not. There is Grand Theft Auto and then there is everything else. Sure, Assassin's Creed and inFAMOUS do traversal better and Saint's Row has more varied missions, but no one excels at world building in the way Rockstar does. From the breakthrough hit of the open world action genre in 2001 to the innovations and insane detail of GTAIV, Rockstar has not only defined the genre but sculpted it for a decade while others just toyed around with it.
