Beta test Skyrim 1.4 on Steam (if you dare)

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2033 days, 23 hours, 33 minutes ago
Tuesday, January 24, 2012 7:51:01 AM GMT
Last week, Bethesda gave us the patch notes for Skyrim's next update, version 1.4. Rather than longingly glare at a web page for all of the fixes coming to your plagued save files, you have another option, granted you're playing the game on PC: you can opt into a beta version of the new update. Just make sure you back up all of your save files and other pertinent things first, mmkay? (more)

The people at Valve Software like to tease. They don't, however, like to confirm the existence of new Half-Life games. (more)

This Dota 2 fan set up a billboard to win a beta key

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2147 days, 1 hour, 13 minutes ago
Monday, October 03, 2011 6:10:47 AM GMT
One Dota 2 fan wanted to win a beta key in a big way in Valve's recent photo contest -- like, really big. The rules stipulated entrants submit a photograph of themselves "holding a sign that reads 'Dota 2' and your 'PlayDotA.com Username' in any creative fashion," and that the image had to be larger than 600x400 px. So Steven Addison put his image on a billboard, because that's what sane people do to get beta keys. (more)

Valve Wants to Pull Players Off CS 1.6 with CS: GO

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2152 days, 33 minutes ago
Wednesday, September 28, 2011 6:50:39 AM GMT
The original, 11-year-old Counter-Strike (1.6) game is currently Valve's most-played title on Steam, and its successor, Counter-Strike Source, is the studio's third-most played game. Yet with the release of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Valve is essentially faced with the daunting task of luring those two communities away from their beloved games and stick with the newer product. That said, how will Valve end the seven year division between the two without shutting the games down completely? (more)

L4D2 to get Blood Harvest if 60,000 players unlock Achievement

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2205 days, 42 minutes ago

The slow and steady march (undead, you might say) to release all of Left 4 Dead 1's maps into Left 4 Dead 2 continues, with Valve offering fans a chance to unlock the beta version of Blood Harvest early. So, how does it work? Simple: To unlock Blood Harvest, PC players simply have to help test a new version of Dead Air. (more)

Next for Team Fortress 2: Free-to-play status

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2248 days, 1 minute ago
Friday, June 24, 2011 7:23:11 AM GMT
For the Über Update festivities, Valve set up Team Fortress 2 with week-long free status. I thought this was a smart idea, but not entirely unexpected, since Valve has a history of pulling such stunts. Making the full game free, forever? Yeah, that's a bit more ballsy -- and it's apparently what the company is doing. (more)

The company admits that it's rather late in the game, but a mobile Steam client could become more of a possibility if the requests keep rolling in. (more)

Tons of Portal 2 concept art from Valve's ARG

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2321 days, 1 minute ago
Tuesday, April 12, 2011 7:22:41 AM GMT
Valve's Potato Fool's Day alternate-reality game (ARG) has taken off since we last mentioned it here. There's a history of the findings right here, which you should check out. As always, it's impressive to see all of the pieces come together, person by person. The ARG has resulted in a considerable amount concept art for Portal 2. Super Punch has been pretty good about collecting the images: there are variations of Chell, the robots, and the game's cover art; a relaxation vault; and even a bathysphere, ... (more)
