It's gotten its own photo shoot, some cool animation, and the interest of James Cameron -- and now Curiosity finally has a destination. NASA's pluckily-named Mars rover is set to land next to a mountain inside the red planet's 96-mile-wide Gale Crater. Curiosity is scheduled to touch down in August 2012 in search of life on the fourth rock from the sun. (more)

Nokia 'Sea Ray' WP7 handset revealed on a factory floor? (Video)

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2257 days, 21 hours, 15 minutes ago
Tuesday, July 19, 2011 10:05:17 AM GMT
Stephen Elop himself spilled the beans about Nokia's first WP7 handset, codenamed Sea Ray, when he told a large live audience and some whirring video cameras that he wanted the phone to be kept "super confidential." Now we have a whole new puddle of legumes lying on what sounds like a Chinese factory floor, courtesy of the authentic-looking video above. The clip reveals the N9-like device removed from what appears to be a stealth case, followed by a speedy boot-up into the Windows Phone OS. We're also tr... (more)

In some circles, the Green Lantern movie and games have been a major success. So much so that the folks at WB have decided to give fans a chance to peek behind the curtain at the making of Rise of the Manhunters. They're definitely right about one thing, Green Lantern (Hal Jordan, specifically) is a fantastic super hero. The jury may be out on the movie and games, but he's a damn good character. (more)

Wall-E gets a LEGO Mindstorms NXT makeover, tears up the dance floor (video)

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2260 days, 22 hours, 15 minutes ago

Alright, let's all be upfront here. When you saw this Pixar masterpiece you caught yourself thinking, "Destruction of the Earth? Not so bad... if that means I get my own Wall-E." It's ok, other more robotically-adept Quebecers had the same idea. Except they managed to mix it up with a LEGO Mindstorms NXT kit and create a waste-collecting romantic of their own -- sans the devastation of our world. The brainchild of Montreal-based creator Marc-André Bazergui, project w.5 incorporates six NXT bricks, 17 mot... (more)

iOS 5 beta 3 already jailbroken, new features come to light

Who needs sleep, right? Rather than putting in the tried-and-true "eight hours" that your mum still insists that you get, you're going to be doing something a bit more adventurous this evening. Something involving a "jailbreak" of your recently updated iPod touch, iPhone or iPad. Just hours after Apple pushed out iOS 5 beta 3 to its developers, the folks at iPhone Dev-Team have confirmed that a Sn0wbreeze update will support jailbreaking on that very build. (more)

Kingston Wi-Drive wireless storage for iOS review (video)

With nearly 350,000 apps and counting, the iPhone's maximum capacity of 32GB doesn't allow you to even scratch the surface of the App Store's catalog. Throw in an HD movie, some TV episodes, hundreds of tracks and a few thousand photos, and you'll be chewing through those available bytes in no time. Most manufacturers compensate this limitation by including a microSD slot for additional storage, but not Apple (more)

Don't be shy now: which of you doesn't love raiding your mother's closet and trying on her paisley dresses and velour tracksuits? That's more or less the idea behind Virtual Dressing Room, a Kinect hack that taps into the clandestine thrill of sneaking into other people's boudoirs. Unlike some other shopping hacks we've seen, the app goes beyond just pilling on 2D pieces, but uses 3D models so that the items mold to your limbs, with the shadows and creases in the virtual fabric changing as you preen for ... Google Maps Transit Navigation beta for Android hands-on (video)

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2269 days, 21 hours, 3 minutes ago

Earlier this afternoon, Google pushed Maps v5.7 to the Android Market. The app's Transit Navigation (beta) feature brings GPS stop-by-stop nav to public transit systems in over 400 cities around the world, helping you find the subway or bus stop, then letting you know exactly when to get off as you ride. There are obvious benefits to using this in a foreign city, where alert-enabled (English!) directions could potentially save you hours of frustration. (more)

Japanese TORo II gallops ahead at a mechanical snail's pace (video)

Snails with benefits? Our salt shaker might disagree. But some enterprising engineers over at Japan's Chuo University managed to turn this garden-variety pest into fodder for mechatronic inspiration. Based on the gastropod's preferred method of 'galloping' -- wherein waves of foot-to-head muscle contractions propel it forward -- researchers at the Mechatronics Lab created TORo II, an omnidirectional robot that could make its way to a hospital near you. Sick and tired of your pathetic little mousepad? Why not check out the WarPad? It's a massive 16.97 by 13.98 inch surface designed to rid your gaming marathons of mousing friction and the vague discomfort that comes with having the palm of your hand rest on the edge of the pad. The WarPad accomplishes the latter by clipping to the edge of your desk and slowly tapering off the side. XFX's massive single-player gaming mousepad can also slide back and forth on your desk, when you need to make some more room... (more)

Smirking as you pull down borderline-criminal speeds on your Droid Charge? Ericsson's doing you (at least) one better. The Swedish company is pushing out-of-this-stratosphere speeds to its testing van using upcoming LTE-Advanced technology; it managed to hit download speeds that exceed our paltry LTE limit by a factor of ten -- that's 1Gbps, folks. Not only is Ericsson cranking up the speed, it's also endeavoring to make the new network more efficient by offering 8x8 MIMO (Multiple-Input, Multiple-Output... (more)

Way faster than the one that you have at home. It might even make your own DSL or cable connection feel as sluggish as dialup. (more)

Wakeboarding is so 2005. Wakeboarding with a camera-packing six-rotor MikroKopter tracking your every jump and belly flop? Now that sounds like something we can get behind. The folks over at MikroKopter have renewed our interest in the sport by mounting a FollowMe transmitter (which lets the drone track your every move), along with a GoPro camera to one watersportsman's helmet.
