Microsoft Research Shows Transparent 3D OLED With Kinect

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1987 days, 1 hour, 6 minutes ago
Monday, March 12, 2012 8:31:12 AM GMT
The foundation of Microsoft's interactive display is a transparent 3D OLED supplied by Samsung. Other than traditional Kinect interactions, however, the display creates a 3D scenario behind the screen. The user reaches to the back of the screen to interact with the shown objects. This may not be the most convenient 3D technology and reminiscent of an environment similar to a biology research lab, but it is the most impressive demonstration of a transparent OLED we have seen to date. GDC: Curing caustic communities in Sins of a Dark Age

When I first started trying out League of Legends and Heroes of Newerth, I was very quickly pushed away by their atrocious treatment of new players. Ironclad has stepped up to the plate in their new "commander and hero strategy game," Sins of a Dark Age. Instead of trying to punish antisocial behavior, they want to reward the good samaritins of the community. (more)

Hit Firemint iPhone game Flight Control blasts off into space with a new sequel called Flight Control Rocket. You're still tracing a line with your fingertip to guide craft to runways while working to avoid collisions, but this time you're up in the stars, and you're guiding spaceships to a bigger carrier ship. Different ships give you a variety of landing problems to solve, including rows or ships, or ones that split in two when you touch them. (more)

Konami has revealed that the can of Snakes that is the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection will finally make its way to the PlayStation Vita this summer. Sadly, it will be one Snake short, as Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker is not part of the Vita collection. That leaves only two titles on the tiny Vita card, namely Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. (more)

Lytro camera review

Saturday, March 10, 2012 9:27:07 AM GMT
Don't let that cute design fool you. Lytro, the world's first commercial light field camera, is the culmination of nearly twenty years of research -- a project that once occupied an entire wall facade, and has since been miniaturized into something that fits in the palm of your hand. An impressive feat, sure, but not as arresting as the end result: the ability to refocus pictures, even after you've taken them. (more)

Google May Be Developing Motion Interface for Android

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1989 days, 16 minutes ago
Saturday, March 10, 2012 9:20:49 AM GMT
A patent filing made public last week suggests that Google is working to turn a device's front-facing camera into a motion-input system, allowing consumers to use gestures instead of greasing up the screen with fingerprints. If granted, the company could reportedly take this patent down several avenues, including incorporating the technology into Android itself, saving the tech for Motorola, or hording the patent for use against rivals Apple and Microsoft. With Apple's new iPad 3 publicly out of the bag and set to invade store shelves next week, the tablet industry is now setting its sights on that mysterious 7.85-inch version reportedly heading to retail shelves in 3Q12. What we're betting is that it will be christened as an iPod Touch XL, but tablet manufacturers are still quivering in their boots nonetheless, fearing the fierce competition the device will bring.
