Live from Camp Pendleton with ViaSat SurfBeam 2 Pro Portable (video)

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2105 days, 38 minutes ago
Tuesday, February 14, 2012 9:41:27 AM GMT
There's no power outlet, land-based internet connection or even a decent cell signal in sight, yet we're posting this live, at fast broadband speeds. We're miles deep into Camp Pendleton, connected to ViaSat's SurfBeam 2 Pro Portable mobile satellite transceiver and sending data to and from ViaSat-1 located more than 20,000 miles above our heads. SurfBeam 2 wasn't designed for us to kick back and surf the web in the middle of nowhere at speeds that we could barely achieve while tethered to a cable connec... (more)

NASA pulls the plug on the mainframe computer era

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2105 days, 40 minutes ago
Tuesday, February 14, 2012 9:39:12 AM GMT
It's the end of another era at NASA, although this one was perhaps more inevitable than others. Chief Information Officer Linda Cureton announced in a blog post over the weekend that the agency's last mainframe computer was shut down this month, marking an end to decades of room-filling computers. Of course, that last mainframe was considerably more recent than that pictured above. (more)

DARwIn-OP learns to skate, contemplates NHL career (video)

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2105 days, 42 minutes ago
Tuesday, February 14, 2012 9:38:01 AM GMT
On the list of dangerous humanoid bots DARwIn is easily topped by the bow-happy iCub. Still -- we don't trust this thing one iota. While we haven't seen it pick up any weaponry just yet, our friends to the north are teaching it one of man's most notoriously violent sports: hockey. Researchers at the University of Manitoba have managed to train the former RoboCup star to stay upright while shuffling about on skates. Smacking a puck into a goal, on the other hand, has proven somewhat trickier. Eventually J... (more)

Apple Asks Fair Labor Association for Factory Inspections

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2105 days, 42 minutes ago
Tuesday, February 14, 2012 9:37:12 AM GMT
Apple has seen significant pressure from labor rights groups and customers over the treatment of staff manning the factories where the iPhone and iPad are built. Earlier this year, the New York Times ran a rather sobering piece on the general business surrounding the China-based manufacturing facilities employed by Apple and many other consumer electronic and computer companies. In late January, Tim Cook penned a letter to the Apple team insisting that his company takes the welfare of its workers very se... (more)

On the heels of announcing a new privacy policy that shares user data across all of its sites without an opt-out option, Google has introduced a service that will pay users with $25 worth of Amazon gift cards in exchange for tracking their every move on the Internet. The program is called Screenwise, and all users need to do is install a browser extension that sees where they go and what they do. (more)

To some degree, game engine developers like id Software and Epic Games are the best hardware advertisers. They'll create a new engine that creeps even closer to reality-generating graphics, release a demo showing off all the new, beautiful visuals and then say "you'll need this kind of hardware to produce this level of visual quality." Heartbeat Could Someday Be Used to Replace the Password

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2105 days, 50 minutes ago
Tuesday, February 14, 2012 9:29:08 AM GMT
If computers can be secured simply by using a touchpad and your fingertip, why can't our heartbeats be used as a password? After all, the technology to quickly determine a pulse by touch is already in use by hospitals, doctors offices and even the local gym which picks up on a heartbeat via the wrist or the palm. Who needs the whole face and voice recognition combo when users could simply touch their laptop to gain access without typing in a password? (more)

Preview: Street Fighter X Tekken through a noob's eyes

A friend once told me he thought fighting games had cool characters. After he wiped the blood from his head, he quickly apologized to me and said, "Perhaps I should rethink that statement." Then miraculously, out of a nearby TV jumped Roger from Tekken, Voldo from SoulCalibur, and Rufus from Street Fighter. Though I wasn't surprised in the least, my friend stood perplexed as he watched Roger jump around adorably, Voldo slither on the floor and hiss in a homoerotic fashion, and Rufus consistently break wi... Lollipop Chainsaw: Nick lost all but his head over Juliet

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2106 days, 1 hour, 27 minutes ago

Another fun video promoting Lollipop Chainsaw has been released. This go-around, we're given a little bit of history on Nick Carlyle, Juliet's boyfriend, who isn't quite the man he used to be. So far, I like the character because he's presented as a straight man, something you don't often see from a decapitated head. (more)

The famous iCEnhancer mod for Grand Theft Auto 4 has reached its biggest full number yet with the release of 2.0. The above video shows off its beautifying features -- the bugs are from Rockstar's video editor and won't appear in the mod, creator Ice La Glace says -- and a "natural" version of 2.0 is set to drop any day now. Japanese hardware sales, January 30 - February 5: Love song edition

We talk a lot of trash about Valentine's Day because it's hilarious and easy, but in all honesty, there's nothing wrong with two people using the greeting-card holiday as an excuse to express their love for each other. To make up for our maliciousness, we want to help facilitate that lovin' by providing some nice background music for your romantic evening. (more)

AT&T prepares internal systems for shared data, launch date still TBD

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2106 days, 1 hour, 45 minutes ago
Monday, February 13, 2012 8:34:54 AM GMT
We've known AT&T's had shared data plans in the works for a healthy amount of time, as the GSM carrier let the cat out of the bag many seasons ago. And while Ralph de la Vega hasn't hid his company's aspirations from view, the network hasn't exactly been forthcoming about when the party is going to get started. If the above and below screenshots are any indication, however, AT&T has already added support for group data into Telegence, the internal system employees use to manage customer accounts. (more)
