LikeBelt concept encourages a very physical kind of Facebook liking (video)

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2149 days, 9 hours, 34 minutes ago
Saturday, January 28, 2012 11:16:58 AM GMT
This is the LikeBelt: a concept device that inserts an NFC chip into a belt-buckle. Instead of tapping your mobile device on a "check-in" tag, you get the belt buckle close enough to do the same. There are only two downsides: how close you have to get and where most people's belts are situated. Suffice to say, the Quagmire-style movements required to ensure a connection aren't the sort of thing you'd do in front of your parents, priest or spouse. The creators provide instructions on how to build your own... (more)

North Korea makes using a cellphone a war crime during 100 day mourning period

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2149 days, 9 hours, 35 minutes ago
Saturday, January 28, 2012 11:16:19 AM GMT
Dear Leader may have blessed his subjects with the gift of 3G in 2008, but in his death he is taking it back... at least temporarily. As part of the country's 100 days of mourning, cellphones have been banned within its borders. If you're caught pulling out a portable to make a call, send a text or get directions to the nearest statue of the departed dictator you'll be charged as a war criminal -- that means serious time in a labor camp or death. It remains to be seen when or if they'll turn into actual products, but The Daily reports that Microsoft is at least working on getting its Kinect technology shoved into laptops. While details are light, the iPad-based publication says that it's seen a pair of prototypes that "appear to be Asus netbooks running Windows 8," but which have had their webcams replaced with an array of sensors that run along the top of the screen (a set of LEDs are said to be at the bottom). Why Tomb Raider reboot won't be on Wii U

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2150 days, 10 hours, 37 minutes ago

Crystal Dynamics' Tomb Raider reboot is coming later this year, as is the Wii U. But they won't be coming together, says community manager Meagan Marie. Anyone who was looking forward to Dead Island for a narrative that focuses on the emotional side of the zombie apocalypse probably walked away from Techland's latest effort at least somewhat unfulfilled. But if bludgeoning brain-munchers and delving into the motivations Ryder White sound like your idea of a good time, well then, Deep Silver has something just for you. (more)

Creepy Japanese title Nanashi no Game phones in a sequel (in Japan)

Call us masochists, but we were really looking forward to the stateside release of Japanese horror title Nanashi no Game, or its sequel, Nanashi no Game Me (trailer above) for the DS. Neither of these made the trip -- evil spirits are afraid of flying, we assume -- and now there is one more Nanashi no Game title we can feel left out on, Nanashi no Appli, out today for iOS devices in Japan. Terraria goes retail in EU with 'Collector's Edition' on March 16

Despite selling over 1 million copies of Terraria across Terra Firma, Merge Games believes the title has yet to reach a key demographic: PC game buyers without internet connections. Okay, okay, it's also possible that the Merge Games-published "Collector's Edition" of the Re-Logic-developed 2D indie hit is popular enough to warrant a version made especially for superfans, but we much prefer the concept of a board meeting to discuss a gradually disappearing group of people. Motorola announces Q4 2011 earnings: $3.4 billion revenue, $80 million net loss

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2150 days, 10 hours, 45 minutes ago

Motorola offered a estimate that lowered expectations for its Q4 2011 earnings earlier this month, and it's now out with the final numbers, reporting net revenues of $3.4 billion and a GAAP net loss of $80 million. That's a swing in the opposite direction from $80 million in net earnings during the same quarter a year ago, although the company did achieve the "modest profitability" it had promised on a non-GAAP basis, reporting earnings of $61 million by that accounting standard.
