German court rejects Samsung's second 3G patent complaint against Apple

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2035 days, 9 hours, 14 minutes ago
Friday, January 27, 2012 10:04:03 AM GMT
About a week after suffering a legal setback in Germany, Samsung received another bit of bad news this morning, when the Mannheim Regional Court rejected the second of its patent infringement claims against Apple. As with last week's ruling, today's decision addresses one of Samsung's arguments that Apple's 3G / UMTS technology infringes upon its patents. Judge Andreas Voss officially shot down these claims early this morning, though he didn't offer an immediate reason for his ruling. (more)

Xbox 360 Controller Mod Dispenses Hot Pockets

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2035 days, 9 hours, 18 minutes ago
Friday, January 27, 2012 9:59:58 AM GMT
Eating while gaming isn't exactly the easiest thing to do, unless you are playing a game with nauseatingly long cutscenes. You may find yourself getting food all over the place or getting killed the second you decide to set that controller down and take a bite of food. Luckily for anybody who can't seem to find the chance to take a break and eat, master tinkerer Ben Heck made the startling discovery that the top of the Xbox 360 controller seems to contour perfectly to a Hot Pocket. Hands On: Steam App for Android, iOS Closed Beta

Before you get too excited, let's just clarify that the release of a Steam app on iOS and Android doesn't mean that Steam-based gaming is on the way. Instead, this offering is similar to the Xbox LIVE apps for Windows Phone and iOS which allows users to connect with friends and more. (more)

Tagg Tracks Your Pet With GPS, Charges Monthly

Although it certainly isn't the first device of its kind, the Tagg GPS pet tracker offers a low profile solution for your adventurous pet that enjoys wandering around a little too much. Tagg's GPS-equipped collar looks just like any ordinary one which is nice when you compare it to the much less discreet Garmin Astro. Check out the video below to see Slashgear's hands-on from the recent CES. (more)

"Ireland's SOPA" to Be Debated Next Week

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2035 days, 9 hours, 30 minutes ago
Friday, January 27, 2012 9:48:03 AM GMT
Earlier this month, we witnessed international outcry and protests from large corporations that opposed the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in the U.S. SOPA is a highly publicized issue, and it's received a lot of attention. However, receiving significantly less attention is the news that Ireland is set to pass a law that is very similar to SOPA. In fact, it's so similar that it's being referred to as 'Ireland's SOPA.' Resident Evil 6: Hoping for evolution, fearing conformity

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2036 days, 8 hours, 20 minutes ago
Thursday, January 26, 2012 10:57:34 AM GMT
When Resident Evil first hit, it was like nothing the home console market had ever seen. George Romero-style zombies in a videogame? Cinematic camera angles? Finite ammo and health? Constantly being forced to choose between fighting and fleeing from your enemies, without ever being sure which path is best? An overarching theme of distrust and claustrophobic entrapment? Sure, some of those design choices had leaked their way into Alone in the Dark and a few other previously released titles, but Resident E... (more)

Preview: The roads are empty in Ridge Racer for PS Vita

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2036 days, 8 hours, 22 minutes ago
Thursday, January 26, 2012 10:56:14 AM GMT
The new installment for PlayStation Vita is somewhat of an oddity. I can't remember a time when my opinion of a game had ever been influenced by the business model used to release it. Already out in Japan, and already taking plenty of heat in the West, Ridge Racer for Vita is a bare bones experience out of the box, as most of its content is planned to be released later on via download. Final Fantasy XIII-2: International version's rapless rap

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2036 days, 8 hours, 23 minutes ago
Thursday, January 26, 2012 10:55:01 AM GMT
We kind of made a big deal about FINAL FANTASY XIII-2's soundtrack. Dale drew our attention to the weird rap talk featured in "Invisible Invader" which accompanies the Lake Bresha area as well as the crazy metal remix of the chocobo theme titled "Crazy Chocobo." We're currently working on an artist profile feature that should be live by the end of the week, but as we were preparing it, we noticed a rather interesting response from music coordinator Keiji Kawamori about these two tracks in particular. Kinect-powered theme park opens in South Korea

While South Korea's cousins to the north are busying themselves with their new glorious leader, the folks in the south's Ilsan districts of Gyeonggi-do are being entranced by American technology. An entire theme park has been created using Microsoft's Kinect tech combined with RFID wristbands that allow attendees to create avatar representations of themselves and move through the park while interacting with its various "attractions." Angry Birds catapulting to Facebook on Valentine's Day

Mirroring the plans of every bitter, lonely soul the world over, Rovio will be filling Facebook with anger come Valentine's Day. Granted, Rovio's February 14 release of Angry Birds for the social-networking site will be quite a bit different from the vitriolic bile we'll be spewing as a projection of our own debilitating loneliness, but both activities do involve throwing things and impassioned rants about how things didn't go as planned. NCsoft files TERA-related lawsuit against Bluehole and En Masse

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2036 days, 8 hours, 28 minutes ago
Thursday, January 26, 2012 10:49:29 AM GMT
It's been a long road to completion for En Masse Entertainment and its upcoming TERA MMO. If NCsoft has its way in court, it might be even longer. MMO Culture reports that NCsoft filed a lawsuit earlier this month stating that a group of its employees quit the company and went on to found Bluehole Studio (TERA's original Korean developer). In doing so, the former employees allegedly stole "copious amounts of confidential and proprietary NCsoft information, computer software, hardware, and artwork relatin... (more)

Netflix Q4 results: 220k new streaming-only customers, beats earnings estimates (Update: no game rentals coming)

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2036 days, 8 hours, 41 minutes ago

Netflix's Q4 2011 earnings report is in, and the company indicates its streaming subscriber count is now 21.67 million. DVD subscribers were still down however, although not as much as expected with cancellations peaking in September when the services split, leaving it with a total number of 24.4 million customers. This closes out a tough 2011 that saw its subscriber count drop by 800k in Q3, and most recently resulted in the search for a new Chief Marketing Officer. (more)

Report: Apple mulling second Israeli facility after Anobit purchase

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2036 days, 8 hours, 42 minutes ago
Thursday, January 26, 2012 10:36:01 AM GMT
It looks like Apple's acquisition of Anobit was only one part of its Israel-based plans -- business daily Calcalist is claiming that the company will open a research center there by the end of February. It's unrelated to the purchase of the flash-chip maker, since Ed Frank was apparently despatched to scope out suitable bases for a new facility in early 2011. It's reportedly going to be based in the Matam Technology District, south of Haifa, adjacent to similar facilities operated by Microsoft, Intel and... (more)

Google strikes deal to bring 27,000 Chromebooks to US schools in three states

It remains to be seen if they'll be the big game-changer in education that Google hopes they will be, but the company is making some progress at getting its Chromebooks into schools. The latest push is a deal with three US school districts, which will see some 27,000 Chromebooks land in the hand of students in Iowa, Illinois and South Carolina. As CNET reports, South Carolina's Richland School District Two is making by far the biggest investment of the lot, ordering 19,000 Chromebooks that will be used a... (more)

Nintendo releases quarterly earnings report: 61 percent drop in profit, grim forecast

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2036 days, 8 hours, 43 minutes ago
Thursday, January 26, 2012 10:34:33 AM GMT
Nintendo released its latest quarterly earnings report this morning and, as with last quarter's report, there's not a whole lot to celebrate. The company posted profits of ¥40.9 billion (about $631.6 million) for the October - December period, representing a 61 percent quarterly drop. That's especially disappointing, considering that this period has traditionally been strong for Nintendo, which had previously forecast an operating profit of ¥1 billion (around $12.9 million).
