Having Gorilla Glass on a touch-device is a good bullet point to have. While the name may be marketing, the actual product is a huge plus for tablets and smartphones. In our experience, Gorilla Glass keeps touchscreens looking more pristine under harsh (or everyday use) conditions. (more)

The industry as a whole still managed to bang out $3.99 billion in combined new sales of hardware, physical software and accessories between November 27 and December 31, 2011. This is, however, a 21 percent drop year-over-year, as the industry pulled down a combined $5.07 billion during the same period in 2010. (more)

Steam has taken the ol' plasma cutter to the price of the Dead Space series, offering one monster of a deal. EA now has 25 million registered Play4Free accounts worldwide

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2049 days, 8 hours, 35 minutes ago
Friday, January 13, 2012 10:41:36 AM GMT
EA's move into the freemium market appears to be working, with the company boasting yesterday that it now has a total of 25 million registered players across all Play4Free titles. Of course, that number is far less impressive if those people aren't actively playing, but that hasn't stopped EA from patting itself on the back and calling the number a "remarkable achievement." For those keeping score at home, that's 25 million registered players combined in Battlefield Heroes, Need for Speed World, Battlefi... (more)

OnLive Desktop hits the iTunes app store

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2049 days, 8 hours, 39 minutes ago
Friday, January 13, 2012 10:37:53 AM GMT
Not satisfied with iOS? No problem, OnLive has a hefty helping of Windows waiting for you in the iTunes app store. Palo Alto announced the streaming Office app earlier this week, touting it as a no-compromise enterprise experience. The free app is fairly basic, giving iPad users hungry for a dose of Microsoft Office limited access to Windows' premiere word processing, presentation and spreadsheet software -- though the outfit has said that it will intro "pro" and "enterprise" versions of the service with... Dish Network's curious Blockbuster project appears to be sputtering a bit, now that the company has confirmed that it will shutter more stores than originally anticipated. Speaking to Reuters at CES today, Dish Network CEO Joe Clayton confirmed that his company plans to close all Blockbuster shops that aren't turning a profit, and that some of the remaining stores will be converted into Dish customer service outlets. No Apple product launch is complete without long lines, frustration and utter exhaustion. Unfortunately, the arrival of the iPhone 4S has escalated this reality to a new level in China. We're now reading reports of fights breaking out between competing gangs of scalpers in the country, each hoping to get their hands on large quantities of Cupertino's latest smartphone. (more)

Behind the scenes with live ESPN 3D boxing at CES 2012

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2049 days, 8 hours, 40 minutes ago
Friday, January 13, 2012 10:36:34 AM GMT
ESPN had a presence at this CES like no other we've witnessed from the sports network and the last of the four letter network's big events was Top Rank Boxing live from the show floor. The event drew quite a crowd and the 3D quality didn't disappoint. The crew was using a Sony HDC-P1 camera system with 3D rigs by the Pace Cameron Group all sent through a Sony MVX-8000x production switcher. If you didn't catch it live on ESPN 3D, we're sure there will be plenty of opportunities to catch the 3D reruns. (more)

Gigabyte's CES 2012 lineup: tablets, laptops and netvertibles, oh my!

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2049 days, 8 hours, 41 minutes ago
Friday, January 13, 2012 10:36:06 AM GMT
Gigabyte's CES suite is something of an alternate universe. It's a place where Ultrabooks and ICS tablets don't exist, and Windows 7 slates, netvertibles and dockable systems are the norm. On display, of course, you'll find the S1081 Windows 7 tablet ($649), a refresh of the S1080 that steps up to a Cedar Trail CPU and adds an HDMI port in the process, but otherwise has the same specs and design. That'll land sometime this quarter. (more)

Griffin Unveils the Cuddly Woogie 2 Case at CES 2012

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2049 days, 8 hours, 46 minutes ago
Friday, January 13, 2012 10:30:15 AM GMT
Among many of Griffin's products on display at CES, the Woogie 2 definitely has to be one of our favorites. Its predecessor, the original Woogie was released in 2010 as a toddler-friendly huggable iPhone and iPod touch case that surprisingly sold pretty well. We still aren't too sure why people like to give expensive, breakable gadgets to their little ones, but we're glad things like the Woogie 2 offer a bit of cuddly protection. (more)

Sony Unveils SmartWatch Companion for Your Android

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2049 days, 8 hours, 51 minutes ago

It looks a lot like one of those iPod nano watches you've seen, but Sony Ericsson's new SmartWatch is a brand new accessory designed to accompany one of the many new Xperia handsets, or one of your other Android devices. For people without wristwatches, reaching into a pocket or purse and pulling out a phone to tell the time can be a bit bothersome. That's where Sony's SmartWatch comes in. (more)

Cooler Master Shows Off Heatsink Computer

Cooler Master is at CES this week showing off quite the unique heatsink. Spotted at the Cooler Master booth by the folks over at PC Perspective, this processor heatsink has an actual computer inside. That's right, while it might look like an ordinary Cooler Master Hyper 212+ CPU heastink and fan, there's a lot going on behind the scenes. Or should we say, behind the heatsink? (more)

JVC Shows Off World's First 4K Handheld Camcorder

With so many products claiming to be the thinnest this, or the lightest that, CES really does make it difficult for companies to impress. However, JVC's latest announcement barely had to try, as the company's got a 'world's first' in tow this week. The company this week unveiled its GY-HMQ10 camcorder, the world's first handheld camcorder to record 4K content. (more)

CES: Alan Wake's American Nightmare kicked my ass

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2050 days, 10 hours, 31 minutes ago

I was a big fan of Remedy's Alan Wake. But one of the less thrilling aspects was the combat, which never really evolves much throughout the game and begins to feel a little like a chore the longer you go. My solution to this was to simply play on nightmare difficulty, where you spend far more time fleeing from enemies than actively trying to stop them and that kept the excitement level up. (more)

Later this year, Hitman: Absolution will continue Agent 47's masterful descent into the dark life of an assassin. In the past, the Hitman series has never been what one would call an intense action experience, but for gamers who prefer a more Rambo-esque affair, developer IO Interactive has made sure Absolution offers something for everyone. "Bigger Than You Think" is the newest trailer for Binary Domain, and this one is all about the story. It has a very obvious I, Robot and Terminator-esque feel to it. (more)

Bit Brigade's Mega Man 2 concert / speedrun is my JAM

So there's this band, Bit Brigade, whose members I will now consider my close, personal friends for life despite never having met them, and they performed the Mega Man 2 soundtrack on stage. Not that special, you may say. Everybody and their dogs play Mega Man 2 music, you may say. Yes, but do those other guys perform in sync with a video of a person playing the actual game live? I didn't think so! (more)
