New Firefall trailer shows the Dreadnaught battleframe

Despite going to both PAX Prime and PAX East in 2011 and Firefall's noticeable presence at both events, I haven't actually tried it yet. Which is a shame, because the more I see of the game, the more I feel compelled to play it. (more)

Skyward Sword not originally destined for motion control

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2104 days, 18 hours, 15 minutes ago
Thursday, October 20, 2011 4:31:11 AM GMT
In an extremely interesting, though not so surprising revelation from the latest Iwata Asks it seems The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword was initially intended to sport a purely button-based control scheme. Apparently series producer Eiji Aonuma had no intention of building the title around the Wii's MotionPlus, but was later inspired by the fencing event in Wii Sports Resort. It's a curious bit of information. My inner cynic is curious as to why MotionPlus wasn't in the plans from the start. (more)

Tuesday night Google finally unveiled Android 4.0 aka "Ice Cream Sandwich," the latest version of its OS which now sports an "evolved" UI that's actually similar to the company's tablet-oriented build, Android 3.x "Honeycomb." This new version will reportedly also make it easier on developers to write apps for both smartphones and tablets, possibly preventing much of the fragmentation that currently plagues the Android platform across the board. According to the report, Jobs negotiated a possible deal which was rumored to have been in the $800 million neighborhood, directly with Houston and Arash Ferdowski, the founders of the services. It is unclear what caused the negotiations to stop, but Houston indicated that they were not willing to lose grip on the company and eventually decided to independently grow the business. (more)

Lytro camera hands-on (video)

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2104 days, 18 hours, 56 minutes ago
Thursday, October 20, 2011 3:49:33 AM GMT
You knew Lytro was up to something, but with its infinite focus light-field powered camera out of the bag, how does it actually stack up in real life? In a word: novel -- you certainly won't be tossing your regular camera for this shooter, at least not in its current incarnation. Still the concept of shoot now, ask focus questions later is revolutionary, so hop on past the break for our initial impressions. (more)

Flash game Megamash is a lovely stew of retro-gaming

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2121 days, 16 hours, 20 minutes ago

I'll be honest here, Flash games got me through high school. Without the constant presence of Newgrounds and Homestar Runner I very well may have failed before getting my hands on that diploma. That said, there's not a whole lot of variety in the sea of simple time wasters and imitations. That's what makes Nitrome's Megamash so exciting. (more)

Chinese pirates help Unity expand

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2121 days, 16 hours, 31 minutes ago
Monday, October 03, 2011 6:14:52 AM GMT
I can't imagine ever seeing a general consensus when it comes to software piracy. Consumers, developers, publishers and the media all approach the situation from different angles and have different motivations and investments in the software. Unity Technologies, developers of the Unity game engine and editor, have added some more gray to the piracy canvass. John Goodale believes that China's culture of piracy allowed his company to make waves in the East. (more)

This Dota 2 fan set up a billboard to win a beta key

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2121 days, 16 hours, 35 minutes ago
Monday, October 03, 2011 6:10:47 AM GMT
One Dota 2 fan wanted to win a beta key in a big way in Valve's recent photo contest -- like, really big. The rules stipulated entrants submit a photograph of themselves "holding a sign that reads 'Dota 2' and your 'PlayDotA.com Username' in any creative fashion," and that the image had to be larger than 600x400 px. So Steven Addison put his image on a billboard, because that's what sane people do to get beta keys. (more)

Sony is defenseless against the fall of the euro

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2121 days, 16 hours, 36 minutes ago

Sony said it expects a "huge impact" on earnings as the euro declines -- many of Sony's exports are to European countries, some of which are on the edge of defaulting on an international loan. The euro currently sits at a decade-low against the yen, and as Sony generally doesn't buy from Europe, it doesn't have a defense against the euro's descent, Sony corporate treasurer Hiroshi Kurihara told Bloomberg.
