Diablo 3 Closed Beta Hands-On: Part 3

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2239 days, 21 hours, 58 minutes ago

In this segment, I’m going to cover two very different classes: the Barbarian and the Monk. As with the prior two (Magician, Demon Hunter), this duo doesn’t really shine until after they’ve unlocked their third ability slot at level 6. And like the previous two, one is a bit easier to play than the other. In this case, it should be fairly obvious which one is the true hack-n-slash champ: the Barbarian. (more)

The Tevatron had been at the frontier of high-energy particle physics for more than 28 years, but was recently surpassed by CERN's LHC, which offers a higher energy level for particle collisions and enables physicists to deliver results the Tevatron could never achieve. Science talent is now flocking to the LHC and the Tevatron had a tough time attracting the brightest minds of the scientific world. (more)

iPhone 5 / 4S placeholders pop up at Cincinnati Bell, questionable specs in tow

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2239 days, 22 hours, 16 minutes ago

It looks like the iPhone speculation train is gaining steam on the way to its final destination, and this time it's flying by Cincinnati Bell's pre-paid service, i-Wireless. A helpful tipster sent in the above screenshot of an iPhone 5 placeholder, accompanied by a $639.99 price tag and a handful of specs: 32GB, 4-inch screen and 4G data speeds. Our friends over at TUAW have also procured a screenshot (after the break) from the same site, displaying a $99.99 16GB iPhone 4S, sporting a 5MP camera, 3.5-inc... (more)

Is this Apple's cheaper iPhone 4?

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2239 days, 22 hours, 17 minutes ago

See that? That just might be the cheaper iPhone that Apple's rumored to formally unveil on Tuesday. Gizmodo Brazil managed to get a hold of a purported iPhone 4s from within a Brazilian Foxconn factory, and while the hardware itself looks just about identical to the iPhone 4 that exists today, there's a new SKU that's leading to understandable speculation. Boston Dynamics Alpha Dog makes Alyx Vance's pet look like a toy (video)

Boston Dynamics' BigDog is one of our favorite insane-level DARPA projects; a robotic pack-mule that can carry 400 pounds of kit for troops. At some point, the Massachusetts mechanics decided the bot would be far better if it was the size of a bull, or, you know, an SUV. (more)

Switched On: Assets in gear

Ecosystems take years to build and depend on other companies. Really, who has the time these days? Plus, they kick in only if a product reaches critical mass. Microsoft and SanDisk demonstrated the risk a few years back with their digital media players in seeding the market with third-party cases and docks using their own proprietary and now abandoned connectors. Over the past year, though, we've seen a number of tech companies take a new approach to mobile product development -- the corporate showcase -... (more)

The folks at Android Police seem to have stumbled across a rather jarring security vulnerability in HTC handsets running Android, giving common apps with internet access a peek at the device's vital statistics, user information and more. Fantastic Arcade: Serious Sam 3 may be the best one yet

As Jim Sterling said in his E3 preview, Croteam’s latest has all the silly enemies and weapons you want. It’s shaping up to be every bit as good as past entries. That’s all you can hope to hear. Except, I’m going to go one further and say it’s shaping up to be best one yet. Where previous Serious Sams felt like a placeholder for a new Doom (one that plays like the original Doom, that is), Serious Sam 3:BFE feels like the logical progression of the '90s-style, arena-based FPS. The Witcher 2 has been very successful for CD Projekt -- and it's most certainly been deserved -- so when it came time to figure out the DLC strategy, the company didn't want to charge players on the PC. As for the Xbox 360, well ... that's not up to CD Projekt. (more)

Nevertheless, the adrenalin junkies at Nokia Siemens Services insist their latest HSPA+ platform will be commercially available to carriers by the end of next year and, to prove it actually works, they've been demoing at PT Expo Comm in Beijing. Sprint's unlimited data plans aren't going anywhere, CTO confirms

Sprint may have plenty of changes in store for its upcoming "strategy update," but it looks like one crucial policy will remain in place -- unlimited data plans. Speaking to reporters at Mobilize in San Francisco yesterday, company CTO Stephen Bye confirmed that even though competitors like Verizon and AT&T are phasing out their unlimited plans, Sprint remains committed to providing its customers with infinite data. Doing so won't come without costs, since, as Bye explained, not all unlimited subscri... (more)

At this point, it's pretty much an open secret that Sprint needs to hitch its ride to LTE to stay in the wireless game. CNET caught wind of the operator's intended 4G plans ahead of its scheduled October strategy announcement -- an event at which many in the industry expect Sprint to lay out its LTE cards. According to the report, the Hesse-led network's been hard at work installing the necessary infrastructure to convert to its towers to FD-LTE, which is the same flavor of LTE (more)
