posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2317 days, 16 hours, 46 minutes ago
Sunday, July 17, 2011 11:15:20 AM GMT
The jump in system requirements going from Windows XP to Windows Vista was significant. The move from Windows 7 to Windows Vista, however, wasn't anything of the sort. In fact, Windows 7 ran better than Windows Vista on modest systems. (more)

The 3DS is having a hard time living up to the success of its predecessor, the Nintendo DS. If you need evidence of that, then look no further than last month's North American sales numbers. According to those, the DS is still outshining Nintendo's successor. (more)

Call of Duty: Black Ops 'Annihilation' dated for PS3, PC

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2318 days, 18 hours, 49 minutes ago
Saturday, July 16, 2011 9:11:48 AM GMT
Actually, Activision's press release said it's "13 days away," so I had to pull out a calendar and count days with my finger. Because math is hard. And then I was like "Are they counting today as a day? Because like, there's a full day ahead of us." But no, it's definitely launching on July 28. My job is so difficult sometimes, really. (more)

Nintendo of America trademarks The Last Story

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2318 days, 18 hours, 50 minutes ago
Saturday, July 16, 2011 9:11:08 AM GMT
Nintendo of America has filed a trademark for The Last Story, which just so happens to be the name of the Mistwalker RPG that it refuses to localize. The trademark was filed on January 13, 2010, but only issued a few days ago, hence why we're now finding out about it. It's worth noting that Nintendo of America, like any company, enjoys filing trademarks for anything regardless of its intent to use them. Nevertheless, fans are taking it as a good sign. (more)

Infinity Ward creative strategist Robert Bowling says that if you want to chat privately with your friends while playing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, you'll probably be able to do so. While the last entry in the series blocked Xbox Live's Party Chat in many of the game modes, Modern Warfare 3 will apparently be much more forgiving. (more)

Epic's Mike Gamble blames studio closures on 'stupid acquisitions'

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2318 days, 18 hours, 52 minutes ago
Saturday, July 16, 2011 9:09:27 AM GMT
Epic Games' European head, Mike Gamble, says there's a simple reason we're seeing so many big game companies close triple-A studios lately: stupidity. "It's happened because of stupid acquisitions," he said in London recently. Quite a few studios have seen shutdowns, either after or even during big game releases, and Gamble even specifically calls out Disney for buying and then closing down Split/Second developer Black Rock Studio. Fast Draw Showdown shooting to PSN July 19

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2318 days, 18 hours, 52 minutes ago
Saturday, July 16, 2011 9:08:57 AM GMT
PSN is bringing the small, evenly weighted guns to PSN with Fast Draw Showdown, slinging onto Move on July 19. The PS3 version of Showdown is revamped from the WiiWare release of the arcade FMV light gun game, including multiplayer modes, online leaderboards and every cowboy's secret weapon -- a new wardrobe. Fast Draw Showdown will cost $9.99 on PSN next week, so polish your pistols now ... although that probably won't do much good for the game, since it uses Move controllers. (more)

Netflix coming to Spain and the UK next year?

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2318 days, 18 hours, 54 minutes ago
Saturday, July 16, 2011 9:07:18 AM GMT
File this one in the unconfirmed-but-hopeful file, as Variety has it on good authority that Netflix could be making its first foray into European waters as early as Q1 2012. After taking Latin America by storm (and subsequently storming the wallets of plain 'ole Americans), the company is purportedly lining up Spain and the United Kingdom for its next trick. Unnamed sources at "leading European film distributors" have confirmed that representatives from the company were looking to "put roots down" in bot... (more)

It's like Christmas in July Arduino fans. The Italian open-source hardware platform just scored a number of new add-ons and a pair of fresh iterations that are sure to keep you tinkering and hacking for some time. First up is the Arduino Ethernet -- which, as you may have guessed -- sports an onboard Ethernet jack. You'll probably want to pick up a USB Serial Adapter to program the ATmega328 chip but, once you've loaded your code, it can be hooked up to the web without the need for a Ethernet shield -- a... Report: 3.5 million 3D Blu-ray discs 'sold' in first year, half were bundled with hardware

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2318 days, 18 hours, 55 minutes ago
Saturday, July 16, 2011 9:05:36 AM GMT
If we're looking at sales figures of 3.5 million units in the first year for a new laptop, smartphone, or camera, then we might be impressed. But 3D Blu-ray discs? When half were included in the box with a Blu-ray player? Man, that's gotta sting. Those numbers are based on an IHS Screen Digest estimate, tallying US sales beginning in June of 2010 and ending last month, though many larger titles didn't make their debut until later in the year. Alright, let's all be upfront here. When you saw this Pixar masterpiece you caught yourself thinking, "Destruction of the Earth? Not so bad... if that means I get my own Wall-E." It's ok, other more robotically-adept Quebecers had the same idea. Except they managed to mix it up with a LEGO Mindstorms NXT kit and create a waste-collecting romantic of their own -- sans the devastation of our world. The brainchild of Montreal-based creator Marc-André Bazergui, project w.5 incorporates six NXT bricks, 17 mot... (more)
