Electronic Arts holds summer sale, not as good as Steam

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2128 days, 12 hours, 11 minutes ago
Saturday, July 02, 2011 9:18:23 AM GMT
Steam's summer sales are legendary. Games can drop as low as one or two dollars, and lives are saved. Electronic Arts has to get really competitive to make its new rival platform, Origin, stand against Valve's offerings, so it's unleashed a summer sale of its own. (more)

Pulling in a slew of positive reviews and stellar sales, Crysis 2 has been a hit for both Electronic Arts and developer Crytek. This despite the fact that the original game, released in 2007 for the PC, never made it to home consoles. But that could be changing soon. (more)

Sony: Only the most hardcore gamers use PlayStation Home

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2128 days, 12 hours, 12 minutes ago
Saturday, July 02, 2011 9:16:57 AM GMT
Sony has claimed that only the most hardcore PS3 gamers use PlayStation Home. That sounds like a failure, given the services casual, Second Life-esque dressing, but if Sony wants to spin the fact that a comparatively small demographic is using it, then they're welcome. (more)

Darksiders 2's artwork is all dark and gloomy and stuff

If your appreciation for Darksiders 2 extends beyond paintings of creepy cliffs and thrones of stone, hit up Game Informer for a spirited interview with Vigil Games art director Han Randhawa. Of course, creative director and comic artist Joe Madureira chimes in a bit about the overall style of the Darksiders series, too. (more)

If you happen to live in the United Kingdom, EA is looking to provide incentive for committing to this year's latest, FIFA 12, early. (more)

Epic's Unreal Engine makes grass look epic for real, come see

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2128 days, 12 hours, 15 minutes ago
Saturday, July 02, 2011 9:13:39 AM GMT
Epic's Unreal Engine 3 produced the picture, which was tweeted by PR manager Dana Cowley. Cowley said the screen is real-time in-game footage, but it looks more like a highly-detailed Bob Ross paint-along. The blades of grass are just so happy. If Unreal 3 can make foliage look this fabulous when it's in motion too, we think players will all be just as pleased as Mr. Ross' little trees. (more)

Nokia pulls out of Japan: once more, with feeling

Okay, we've played this game before, but that was almost three years ago. This time, Nokia's really leaving Japan, and they're taking their fancy luxury phones with them. Actually, Nokia's high-end Vertu phones were all it had left in the land of the rising sun, and even those were only readily available in Tokyo's Shibuya and Ginza districts -- so out of Japan by the end of July? No problem. (more)

The oft-leaked Motorola Droid 3 is dripping information yet again, this time over on Droid-Life where an internal flyer confirms it will be available at retail locations July 14th, with direct fulfillment orders (upgrade in-store, get the phone by mail) starting a week earlier. If that's somehow not enough, there's also a PDF copy of the manual available for download but if you watched the tutorial videos there's probably not much new information to be digested there. Friday the Games for Windows website officially announced that Microsoft's digital delivery store for PC games, GFW Marketplace, is merging with Xbox.com. Microsoft doesn't offer up any additional details, only stating that "now you can get all of your gaming needs in one place." The reaction to the merge is curiously calm over on the Xbox.com forum, with many commenters hoping that the merge means more cross-platform compatibility in the future. (more)

F.E.A.R 3 online passes screwed up for PS3 version

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2131 days, 13 hours, 11 minutes ago
Wednesday, June 29, 2011 8:18:22 AM GMT
The "online pass" system was designed to combat used sales and make money from those who buy secondhand games. Except in the case of F.E.A.R 3, in which Warner Bros. apparently got so excited and giddy over the idea of the system that it forgot one important detail -- giving players the ability to buy a pass if they get a used copy. I'm sure Sony is trying to push as many PSP systems out the door as they can before the PS Vita lands. These new PSP value packs may help them out a bit in Japan. On July 28th Japanese retailers will start selling these 17,800 yen ($220) value packs in Piano Black, Vibrant Blue and Blossom Pink. They come with the system, charger, battery, cleaning cloth, case, and a 2GB Memory Stick Duo Mark II. (more)

Xbox 360 sold twice as many online games as PS3 in 2010

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2131 days, 13 hours, 14 minutes ago
Wednesday, June 29, 2011 8:15:16 AM GMT
It seems that the Xbox 360 is the gamer's choice for online gaming. Recent data from the NPD Group says that the Xbox 360 sold roughly twice as many online-capable games as the PS3 in 2010. And the Wii? No contest. Microsoft's console sold seven times as many online-capable games as the Wii. The data does not detail how frequently these games were played online, but I'm sure it's safe to assume that the Xbox 360 would come out on top in online usage (more)
