Report: Chinese Prisoners Turned to Gold Farmers

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2222 days, 6 hours, 10 minutes ago
Monday, May 30, 2011 9:39:55 AM GMT
It’s not unusual for prisoners to be tasked with heavy-duty manual labor. However, it seems prisoners in China are being forced to do another type of work along with their day jobs. The Guardian this week carries the story of 54-year-old Liu Dali (not his real name), a prisoner who would break rocks and dig trenches in the coalmines of north-east China by day and, at night, build up credits in online games that prison guards would then trade for real money. NVIDIA's new wired 3D Vision glasses give up some freedom for a lower price

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2222 days, 6 hours, 15 minutes ago
Monday, May 30, 2011 9:34:51 AM GMT
NVIDIA has been pushing its 3D Vision platform for a couple of years and at this year's Computex it is looking to pull in more PC users with new wired LCD active shutter glasses. The original wireless specs rely on the same IR sync tech and battery power seen in glasses for many HDTVs, but these get power and data over a 10-foot USB cable. While that might not work for living room viewing, a single user application like PC gaming or watching a Blu-ray 3D on a laptop doesn't suffer for the cable restricti... (more)

NVIDIA's quad-core Kal-El used to demo next-gen mobile graphics, blow minds (video)

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2222 days, 6 hours, 16 minutes ago

You might think yourself too grown-up to be wowed by shiny, glittery things, but we doubt many will be able to watch NVIDIA's new Glow Ball tech demo without a smidgen of childlike glee. Built to run on the company's quad-core Kal-El processor, it shows us the first example of true dynamic lighting on mobile devices and also throws in some impressive physics calculations like fully modeled cloth motion (more)

TomTom working on its own Street View-like service?

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2222 days, 6 hours, 17 minutes ago
Monday, May 30, 2011 9:33:17 AM GMT
TomTom's already seen Google muscle in on its turf in a big way, and it looks like it might now be trying to return the favor. If camera-toting vans like the one above are any indication, it would appear that the company is currently working to bolster its navigation options with its own Street View-like service. So far, all of the van sightings seem to be confined to Europe (France and Belgium, specifically), and they of course don't necessarily confirm that TomTom is indeed working on a Street View com... L021: BREAKING: Government Investigations Have Frozen Google's Manual Search Results

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2225 days, 7 hours, 27 minutes ago
Friday, May 27, 2011 8:22:48 AM GMT
Google’s search results have been "frozen" from anything but algorithmic changes due to multiple government investigations -- and possible investigations -- numerous sources have told LAUNCH. Google search results have always been primarily algorithmic. However, it has long been known inside the industry that some human "massaging" or "grooming" has occurred after the algorithm generated results. Sites that were good actors from Google’s perspective (read: Wikipedia, respected blogs, news sources) wer... (more)

Tetsuya Mizuguchi spoke this week at TEDxTokyo, one of a growing multitude of events organized independently from TED, extending the organization's mission of "ideas worth sharing" to the local level. Intense screenshots of Alice: Madness Returns

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2225 days, 7 hours, 31 minutes ago
Friday, May 27, 2011 8:19:27 AM GMT
One of the major selling points for Alice: Madness Returns is the game's twisted nature, and how the art style meshes nicely with the insanity. Take, for instance, these screenshots. When you enter "Hysteria!" mode, Alice goes all bloody eyed and the world turns black, white, and red, which is what these images depict. I think the original blood-vomiting teaser for Madness Returns has finally been one-upped. (more)

F2P RTS World of Battles: Morningstar goes open beta

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2225 days, 7 hours, 33 minutes ago

World of Battles: Morningstar may not have the most inspiring name, and its website seems designed to keep you from figuring out what it actually is, but it looks pretty alright to me. A free-to-play Total War kind of MMORTS with a fantasy twist that almost looks reminiscent of the old Myth games? That sounds like it's worth a look for the strategy enthusiast at least. (more)

In 2006, Envizions announced the EVO: Phase One console, which was designed as a media center device. It apparently didn't change the world. Five years later, the world has changed anyway, and Envizions has access to an operating system for its new console that developers are already comfortable with: Android. (more)

Though it's possible you've been offered the opportunity to dress like a space wolf at some other point today, we were quite excited to be extended such a chance by the newly announced pre-order bonuses for Warhammer 40K: Space Marine. Folks pre-ordering the forthcoming third-person space shooter at GameStop will get the hilariously named armor, as well as the "black templar chapter armor." A variety of other bonuses are available from several other retailers, detailed below the break. (more)

Tecmo Bowl Throwback dives over the pile onto iOS

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2225 days, 7 hours, 41 minutes ago
Friday, May 27, 2011 8:09:31 AM GMT
Tecmo Bowl Throwback, last year's retro-revival for PSN and XBLA, has been ported to iOS and was released today. iTunes lists the features of the $7.99 port as largely similar to the console game: 30 teams in all, two of which are All-Star squads with customizable rosters, plus Preseason, Season and All-Star game modes. The first two are standard football fare; All-Star mode allows players to pit the game's two All-Star teams against each other. (more)
