Fallout: New Vegas patch coming to all platforms

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2267 days, 22 hours, 56 minutes ago
Wednesday, April 13, 2011 6:32:35 AM GMT
The post-launch support team at Bethesda and Obsidian is preparing to launch a fix for one of the biggest issues still facing Fallout: New Vegas. No, not its apocalyptic levels of irradiation -- the game-crashing bugs and other performance-wrecking snafus that pepper the game's ruined landscape. According to a recent post on Bethesda's blog, a patch targeting "optimizations and stability improvements" is currently in the certification process for PC, Xbox 360 and PS3. (more)

Rebellion's supernatural action title, NeverDead, has a unique hook: Its main character can fight even when his limbs have been severed. Part Devil May Cry, Bayonetta and even Dead to Rights, it also seems to share Splatterhouse's sphincter fixation. It's all pieced together in these new screens. (more)

Thanks to low confidence in Windows Vista, many Windows users opted not to update from Windows XP, which meant the 10-year-old OS remained on top. However, according to statistics from StatCounter (via Royal Pingdom), Windows XP has finally been dethroned. (more)

Apple's just announced Final Cut Pro X at NAB, and Chief Architect of Video Applications Randy Ubillos is demonstrating a beta release as we speak. The "rebuilt from ground up" video editing suite -- which now shares a similar look and feel with iMovie -- will be shipped with 64-bit support to finally make use of more than 4GB of RAM, as well as handling 4K clips on 8-core editing rigs (by way of the Grand Central Dispatch feature on OS X Snow Leopard). DARPA's next-gen wearable display: augmented-reality, holographic sunglasses

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2267 days, 22 hours, 59 minutes ago
Wednesday, April 13, 2011 6:29:24 AM GMT
The US military seems to adore the idea of wearable displays, hence its continued efforts to make them a reality. We know it seems like just yesterday that DARPA tapped Lockheed Martin to build low-power, lightweight augmented-reality eyewear, and it was actually four full years ago when the wild and wonderous dream was to craft HMDs as small and light as "high-fashion sunglasses." Kyocera Echo review

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2267 days, 23 hours ago
Wednesday, April 13, 2011 6:28:50 AM GMT
It's not exactly difficult to put into words what the Kyocera Echo is -- it's a dual-screened Android phone, after all -- but it's a wee bit more challenging to wrap your head around who exactly it's for. The hardcore gaming contingent already has Sony Ericsson's Xperia Play, and those obsessed with screen real estate have options spanning the gamut (more)

Nintendo cutting Wii price to $150 on May 15th?

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2267 days, 23 hours ago
Wednesday, April 13, 2011 6:28:11 AM GMT
Nintendo's miniature white monolith has sold like gangbusters for long enough that we're wary it'll ever get cheap, but a trusted source tells us a price cut is indeed headed our way -- and that the Nintendo Wii will cost just $150 starting May 15th. The timing would make some sense, given how Nintendo's profits have tanked for a while due to flagging hardware sales, and just last month Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime hinted that the Wii's (more)

What's that? You can't get enough of Intel? Well, it's your lucky day, because we just got our hands on the chip maker's roadmap for 2011 and 2012. According to the leaked slides, we can expect to see the Sandy Bridge E-series in Q4 of 2011. Alternately, the 22nm Ivy Bridge is slated for a somewhat less specific release in the first half of 2012. We're also likely to see the new Pentium and Celeron-based Sandy Bridge models in Q3 this year, and the Atom-equipped Cedarview in Q4. (more)

Why you haven't bought a 3DS... yet

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2268 days, 22 hours, 4 minutes ago
Tuesday, April 12, 2011 7:24:29 AM GMT
Two weeks ago from yesterday, the 3DS launched in the USA. So far, the console has sold well, but not quite as well as Nintendo projected. The company expected to move 4 million 3DS units worldwide in the first month of release. From the loose numbers reported thus far, they didn't make that number. In fact, last week, the PSP actually outsold the 3DS in Japan. We're definitely not looking at a disaster for Nintendo here, but I think it's fair to say that both Nintendo and the gaming press may have over ... (more)

Tons of Portal 2 concept art from Valve's ARG

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2268 days, 22 hours, 6 minutes ago

Valve's Potato Fool's Day alternate-reality game (ARG) has taken off since we last mentioned it here. There's a history of the findings right here, which you should check out. As always, it's impressive to see all of the pieces come together, person by person. The ARG has resulted in a considerable amount concept art for Portal 2. Super Punch has been pretty good about collecting the images: there are variations of Chell, the robots, and the game's cover art; a relaxation vault; and even a bathysphere, ... (more)

It looks like Xbox Live preview program participants may be testing out more than a new disc format after all. According to an Xbox Live profile allegedly belonging to one of the beta program administrators, both Avatar Kinect and Hulu Plus features are being tested. Both applications can be seen on the profile, though links to their respective Xbox.com listings appear to be broken for the time being. (more)

Tony Hawk: New game coming next year

We fear that there may be no end in sight for Tony Hawk's long-troubled skateboarding series. Though Activision CEOs announced that 2011 would be the first year without a Tony Hawk game since the dawn of time, Hawk himself told PixelatedGeek in an impromptu interview that "We're actually right in the middle of making a whole new plan right now," when asked whether more Hawk-branded games were in the pipeline. Remedy: LA Noire raises the bar for facial animation

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2268 days, 22 hours, 8 minutes ago

When we first saw the facial-mapping in LA Noire, we must admit we were taken aback. The level of realism is something amazing to behold, as we've said in the past, but we're not the only ones impressed. Edge toured Remedy Entertainment recently, sampling some of the developer's new motion-capture tech for it's next game, and the studio is apparently quite enamored with what they've seen in LA Noire. Mortal Kombat secret character tryouts may disturb you
