Dreamcast and Super Nintendo emulation running on PS3

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2639 days, 22 hours, 19 minutes ago
Friday, September 24, 2010 10:24:54 PM GMT
The beginnings of emulation are already showing up on hacked PS3s. Dreamcast emulator NullDC has a rough version running on Sony's flagship game system. There's a few screenshots of DC games running on the PS3 on dcemu. So far it's just the Dreamcast user interface, but it's a start! (more)

Editorial: Firmware, forums, and desperation -- the dark side of Android hacking

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2639 days, 22 hours, 21 minutes ago

That picture above is no joke -- that's where I ended up last night trying to revive my Droid X review unit. It was fun, in a hacky mad-scientist sort of way, but it's also really sad -- a testament to how Google approves Android device hacking with a wink and a nod, but doesn't provide any safety nets for its most passionate users. PSA: Sony says counterfeit PS3 controllers could explode

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2639 days, 22 hours, 23 minutes ago
Friday, September 24, 2010 10:20:55 PM GMT
We're not sure why anyone would buy a knock-off DualShock 3 or SIXAXIS gamepad, considering the trouble Sony's taken to make sure they don't work, but the PlayStation 3 manufacturer has another reason you might want to steer clear of counterfeit pads -- they could be tiny Li-ion bombs poised to explode. Talk about force feedback! Yes, the company that brought us exploding laptop batteries says that third-party products "which are practically identical in appearance to genuine PlayStation®3 wireless cont... (more)

HP Slate prototype caught in the wild, booted to Windows 7

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2639 days, 22 hours, 28 minutes ago
Friday, September 24, 2010 10:16:32 PM GMT
HP has done plenty of its own teasing of the HP Slate, but in-the-wild spottings are few and far between. Now our favorite YouTuber and yours, x313xkillax, has a video of an HP Slate prototype. (There's some speculation that this is a fake, but from everything we know about the tablet we're pretty sure this is the real deal.) The hardware looks similar to what we've seen before, though perhaps a bit further along than version Conecti.ca "reviewed" back in April. (more)

Comcast says additional Clearwire investment is unlikely

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2639 days, 22 hours, 29 minutes ago
Friday, September 24, 2010 10:15:01 PM GMT
Clearwire isn't in the black yet, having bled about $126 million in the second quarter of 2010 -- but should the need arise for additional investment before it can turn a profit, the company shouldn't plan to knock on Comcast's door. Though it doesn't have as much visibility in the 4G marketplace as Clear and Sprint do, Comcast does actually offer WiMAX service using Clearwire's network and owns about 9 percent of it, but the cable provider's CFO says that the prospects for upping that share aren't good... You don't say: Pokemon Black/White are a success in Japan

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2641 days, 13 hours, 21 minutes ago
Thursday, September 23, 2010 7:23:08 AM GMT
The number of pre-orders for Pokemon Black and White in Japan was pretty crazy, but they've got nothing on the amount of copies sold in the first week: 2.55 million. In fact, The Pokemon Company International called them the "fastest-selling DS games ever in Japan over the first week of sales." Just when you're starting to think the formula has gone unchanged for too long, they switch up the design in a few key areas and it pays off big time. (more)

Samurai Warriors 3 cover edits the boobs in North America

Samurai Warriors 3 is coming Stateside very soon, but not in its original form. In a move that could be considered even more outrageous than the famous Yakuza 3 edits, it has been discovered that Nintendo of America edited out a bit of cleavage on the game's box art! CENSORSHIP! (more)

Apple Gets Beaten by Nexus One in HTML5, Flash

A lot of that talk is from the Apple camp, with its iOS devices not supporting Flash but rather urging sites to go HTML5, but with all modern browsers boasting HTML5 support with hardware acceleration, the new web standard is pretty compelling. (more)

Bored Hunters Are Shooting Down Google's Fibers

You're out hunting and you're not having much luck. No animals have happened past and you're getting extremely bored. What to do, what to do? How about using Google's fibers for target practice? According to IT News, network engineering manager for Google, Vijay Gill, last week told the AusNOG conference that people in Oregon were using the fiber insulators for target practice because they were bored. It's become such a problem that Google is moving its fibers underground (more)

NeuroSky shows off upcoming Mindwave headset, other new chip applications

We've seen plenty of applications for NeuroSky's brainwave-sensing chip already, but it looks like we're going to be seeing... more. Luckily, some of these are pretty neat. A sweat-band embedded "Thket Brain Athlete" product will allow athletes and trainers to track concentration levels through a workout or through a particular activity (a golf swing, for instance) and analyze that performance later. Roku XDS review

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2641 days, 13 hours, 34 minutes ago
Thursday, September 23, 2010 7:10:05 AM GMT
It's an interesting time for Roku -- the upstart device company has owned the cheap'n'easy Netflix streaming market since the beginning, and its platform has been getting more and more flexible over time, adding various channels like Amazon Video on Demand, MLB.tv, UFC, and others. But cheap and simple aren't necessarily good enough anymore, not with the new $99 Apple TV set to launch in just a few weeks -- and while Roku already took the preemptive step of slashing prices across the board, it's followin... Review: Shoot to Kill

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2644 days, 13 hours, 16 minutes ago

I look forward to playing iPhone shooters about as much as I look forward to my first prostate exam, because I imagine they’re quite similar. There’s an awkwardly painful use of touch immediately followed by feelings of helplessness and frustration, and you’re paying to have the experience, to boot. Whether FPS, TPS, or twin-stick, non-shmup shooters on this platform always seem to suffer from the same issues. (more)

DISSIDIA 012 [duodecim] FINAL FANTASY preview: a sensible sequel

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2644 days, 13 hours, 25 minutes ago
Monday, September 20, 2010 7:18:58 AM GMT
DISSIDIA 012 [duodecim] FINAL FANTASY may have a bizarre, head-scratching title, but its brand new features make a whole lot of sense. The follow-up to 2008's mash-up fighter offers the most obvious addition for a sequel: an expanded roster, including Final Fantasy XIII's Lightning and Final Fantasy VII's Tifa. However, it also includes a number of other features that make the experience more engaging for fans, and more accessible for newcomers to the franchise. (more)
