Dead Space Extraction PS3 preview: Rescue operation

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2440 days, 4 hours, 24 minutes ago
Monday, September 20, 2010 7:04:51 AM GMT
EA is sending in the experts to salvage Dead Space Extraction, left adrift in retail space last year. Although Extraction impressed critics with its threatening environments and frantic action, it never quite found the audience it deserved on the Wii. The on-rails shooter was an essential component of EA's harsh sci-fi universe, trading engineer Isaac Clarke's high-pressure exploration for a briskly paced series of intense standoffs -- that 480p resolution certainly didn't stop it from being it a Dead S... Minecraft server issues cause impromptu free-to-play weekend

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2440 days, 4 hours, 25 minutes ago
Monday, September 20, 2010 7:03:42 AM GMT
If the latest Penny Arcade strip filled you with an interest/mortal fear of Markus Persson's indie sandbox title Minecraft, you'll be pleased to learn that the game is free to check out today (and possibly even a bit longer). On the game's official site, Persson reported, "Minecraft got way too popular for this humble server," leading him to temporarily shut down a few of the game's online services. Luckily for us spendthrifts, Persson decided to institute "a 'free-to-play weekend', or however long this ... (more)

SingStar Dance tracklist revealed, embarrassment pending

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2440 days, 4 hours, 25 minutes ago
Monday, September 20, 2010 7:03:40 AM GMT
When we first checked out the Move-enabled SingStar Dance at GamesCom last month, we knew it had potential to be pretty embarrassing in a party-type situation. Now that PlayStation.Blog has revealed the full list of tracks to be included in the game, we've gone ahead and upgraded that observation to "extraordinarily embarrassing." Like, when we bust out our particularly emphatic version of Shaggy's "Boombastic," we doubt we'll be able to show our face around our acquaintances ever again. (more)

PixelJunk Shooter 2 preview: it's a gas

It may not have had an official presence at TGS this year, but I had a chance to see an updated build of PixelJunk Shooter 2 behind closed doors. Q-Games' Dylan Cuthbert was mum on when we can expect the PSN sequel, but he did showcase a bevy of new features we can expect in the Shooter follow-up. (more)

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2440 days, 4 hours, 42 minutes ago
Monday, September 20, 2010 6:46:38 AM GMT
Turns out the rumors weren't too far off. After fighting for ages to get the iPhone 3G to Chinese shores, citizens of the aforementioned nation will soon be able to pick up one of Apple's latest (the iPhone 4, if you're keeping count) without reverting to importers and KIRF shops. Starting on September 25th, the iPhone 4 will be available across China in retail locations as well as China Unicom shops, with off-contract pricing set for CNY4,999 (16GB model) and CNY5,999 (32GB model) -- that's around $743... Another week, another well-detailed tear down from the kids at iFixit. Blessed with an eight out of ten on the repairability index, the PlayStation Move was said to be one of the easiest devices yet to break down and reassemble, so there's a good chance that any novice DIYer with a steady hand and a Phillips screwdriver could accomplish what's shown in the link below. Einstein brings Newton OS to the iPhone, handwriting recognition and all

Monday, September 20, 2010 6:44:31 AM GMT
Palm OS on the iPhone? Check. Android on the iPhone? Quasi-check. Newton OS on the iPhone? As of today, that's a trio of affirmations. Developer Matthias Melcher has wisely used a good bit of his free time to port one of the world's forgotten-but-not-forgotten operating systems onto Apple's iOS platform, and while things are understandably sluggish right now, he's currently working on performance optimizations that'll hopefully have it running like a clock before long. He's also made the source code ava... (more)

Capcom just announced that Wesker and Spider-Man are going to be in Marvel Vs. Capcom 3. Just as I get home from a day's worth of scouring the TGS show floor for hot videogame news, I check the world of the wide web to find that one of the biggest stories of the day has been out and about on the Internet for hours. Yeah, I'm bitter. (more)

Anyway, here's a better look at the new special PSP that Sony is releasing in for Capcom's Monster Hunter Portable 3rd. We got a closer look at the new nub today. I like that it has a bit of an indention for what looks to be increased thumb comfort. I kind of wish it was rubberized, but this will work. (more)

See all of these people in the above picture? This is just the small walkway between the two main hallways at Makuhari Messe, home of the 2010 Tokyo Game Show. Can you believe that crap? I walked in the middle of this earlier today, smelling smells and seeing sights I never expected to smell or see. I was frustrated and cranky walking through it, but finding this spot later and seeing it from above, I was amazed. (more)

One of the things serverly lacking from almost every Bond game after GoldenEye 007 was the ability to play as some of Bond's classic nemesis. Did it make much of a difference unless you were being a douche and playing as Oddjob? Not really, but it was cool none the less. (more)

TGS: Hands-on with the spooktacular Ghost Trick

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2441 days, 4 hours, 20 minutes ago

Ghost Trick is not an action game. It's the new game from the team that brought us the fairly non-violent Ace Attorney series. Still, non-violent doesn't mean easy, and it certainly doesn't mean that you aren't going to die. In fact, Ghost Trick starts off with the death of the game's main character, and from there on out, his continued existence on this mortal plane is constantly in peril. (more)

Fantastic Arcade brings indie/XBLA showcase to Austin

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2441 days, 4 hours, 21 minutes ago
Sunday, September 19, 2010 7:07:40 AM GMT
I used to lament living in Texas as a fan of the games industry, but in recent years the gaming presence in Austin, TX has grown at a staggering pace. Long a hotbed of MMO development, the city is beginning to attract developers of all stripes who resonate with the independent vibe that the city has always promoted. While nowhere near the size of the likes of E3 or PAX, Austin still plays host to some impressive events on a yearly basis. GDC Austin (now branded GDC Online) is here, and the interactive/ga...
