A wild Spec Ops: The Line closed beta appears!

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2624 days, 18 hours, 28 minutes ago
Saturday, July 17, 2010 9:23:21 AM GMT
About a month ago, we found out from Yager and 2K Games that Spec Ops: The Line would be the latest console-bond shooter to get the beta treatment. The difference here is that this seems more like an honest-to-goodness, actual beta, instead of being primarily an attention-grabbing marketing tool. (more)

Report: EA selling a 15% stake in Ubisoft

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2624 days, 18 hours, 34 minutes ago
Saturday, July 17, 2010 9:17:09 AM GMT
EA has been sitting on a good chunk of Ubisoft stock for a few years now. It looks like the company is planning to unload some of those shares (perhaps a result of some recent losses?). Bloomberg reports that EA is preparing to offload a 15% stake in Ubisoft -- last we heard, EA was holding onto nearly 25% of voting shares in the French publisher. The company currently holds the single largest stake in Ubisoft shares, Bloomberg says. (more)

Saturday, July 17, 2010 9:16:20 AM GMT
This post is for eggheads only -- we won't be talking about how to get Xbox Live achievements, or how the system of earning Gamerscore actually works. Nope, the latest Xbox Engineering blog post gets down and dirty with the actual software and hardware behind the Xbox Live Achievements system, and not only how your Xbox actually learns from whatever game you're playing that you just earned some points, but how you friends get to know it as well. posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2624 days, 18 hours, 35 minutes ago

According to a statement issued by Sony yesterday alongside the publication of the NPD Group's June sales report, the PS3 shortages cited by GameStop in its Q1 earnings report have been "resolved." No explanation for the resolution was given in said statement, though we imagine it has something to do with making more consoles and delivering them to stores at a faster pace. (more)

Report: Activision Invested More than $100 Million in StarCraft II Development

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2624 days, 18 hours, 39 minutes ago
Saturday, July 17, 2010 9:11:34 AM GMT
Activision has a lot riding on StarCraft II's success. According to the Wall Street Journal (subscription required), the publisher has contributed some $100 million to the development of the anticipated sequel. That number puts it roughly on par with Grand Theft Auto IV, which also cost around $100 million to develop. The Wall Street Journal's report states that the StarCraft II figure doesn't include marketing, so the cost is apt to be even higher. (more)

Miyamoto: The Next Wii Will NOT be 3D-enabled

It seems like everyone is jumping on the 3D bandwagon, except consumers. Sure, 3D movies are nice to watch in the cinema, but none of us are willing to part with thousands of dollars to attempt to bring that experience to our living room. 3D gaming is no different; so many companies are endeavoring to be the first to bring the experience of three-dimensional gaming to users. Indie Developer Tells Epic To F**k Off

Saturday, July 17, 2010 9:01:25 AM GMT
Thursday during the Developer Conference in Brighton, Chris Harris from UK indie developer Positech said that smaller developers have the advantage of building a personal relationship with the end user--thus landing an actual sale--by emailing them directly. The observation came during a public debate in regards to the future of micro-studios. He was joined on stage by a panel of three other developers: Robin Lacey (Beatnik), Sean Murray (Hello Games) and Mark Morris (Introversion). (more)

Proving once again that in this world it's more important what you look like than what you do, the Xbox 360 has cruised to the title of best-selling console in June on the back of a sexy physical redesign. The latest numbers from NPD show that Microsoft shifted 451,700 units in the US, which ousts the Wii's tally of 422,500 and comfortably dwarfs the PS3's 304,800 (more)

Apple's not really ready to say it's sorry about the iPhone 4 antenna design, but it is willing to give all you darn squeaky wheels free cases for your trouble. Since Apple can't build its own Bumpers fast enough, it will give you a few options and let you decide, then send it your way for free as long as you purchased the phone before September 30th. Not good enough for you? Well, if you already bought a bumper from Apple you'll get a refund, and you can also return your phone for a full refund within 3... (more)
