Fring bends under the pressure of iPhone video calling, Skype temporarily locked down

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2689 days, 18 hours, 53 minutes ago
Saturday, July 10, 2010 9:03:16 AM GMT
We guess this is a "good" thing in a roundabout way, but Fring has just dropped the knowledge that its video calling update for the iPhone 4 has been so wildly successful that they've been forced to temporarily restrict Skype access to "free up capacity" for direct Fring-to-Fring calls. Hopefully the company is hard at work beefing up its infrastructure to bring everything back to normal -- but in the meantime, at least you've got an easy way to look your EVO-toting friends square in the face without hav... What is this tiny Apple touchscreen that just leaked in Taiwan?

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2689 days, 18 hours, 54 minutes ago
Saturday, July 10, 2010 9:02:25 AM GMT
Okay, we have no idea what's going on here, but Taiwanese site Apple.pro has just posted up some shots of appears to be a tiny Apple-labeled touchscreen panel -- it measures just 3cm (1.18 inches) square. Given the site's track record with previous Apple component leaks like the white iPhone 4 and the unibody MacBook Pro enclosure, we're somewhat inclined to believe this is real, but we have no idea what it's for -- a new iPod nano? The next-gen Apple TV's remote control? Steve Jobs's dream watch? -- bu... (more)

Dead Space Ignition is a downloadable Dead Space 2 prequel, for XBLA and PSN

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2691 days, 19 hours, 22 minutes ago
Thursday, July 08, 2010 8:35:13 AM GMT
We know Dead Space-dev Visceral Games has had its eye on the downloadable space -- along with the rest of EA -- for some time now with the oft-rumored Jack the Ripper title and something else. Well, that something else is Dead Space Ignition, "the first of many exciting game extensions we have planned for the launch of Dead Space 2," says Dead Space franchise exec producer Steve Papoutsis. NFL Hall of Famer Jim Brown appeals dismissed lawsuit against EA

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2691 days, 19 hours, 28 minutes ago
Thursday, July 08, 2010 8:28:31 AM GMT
Jim Brown, nine-season running back for the Cleveland Browns and NFL Hall of Fame inductee, filed a lawsuit against Electronic Arts in 2008 for using his likeness in Madden '09 without first obtaining his permission. Last September, U.S. District Judge Florence-Marie Cooper (who passed away in January from lymphoma) ruled that EA was protected by First Amendment rights -- a decision which Brown is now attempting to overturn in a San Francisco appellate court. Sega has decided it will not attend Europe's massively successful GamesCom in Cologne, Germany this year. The publisher told VG247 in a statement that the show "continues to be the most important European event in the calendar," but that it was a "commercial decision" not to attend in 2010. (more)

FIFA 11 to have web-based, console-connected Creation Center

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2691 days, 19 hours, 36 minutes ago

Create-a-player modes have been common in games for more than a decade, but when it came to their implementation in console titles, I've found that a controller often isn't ideal for fiddling with anatomy sliders and scrolling through clothing choices. And I've been surprised that, in the modern age of Internet-connected consoles, more developers haven't leveraged console/PC connectivity to improve the user experience on that front. (more)

This shouldn't come as too absurd a notion given prior statements from EA about wanting to lead up to full retail titles with downloadable games. The intention is, I assume, to raise excitement levels, get us talking, and possibly even bring in some new players who would've otherwise passed on final, $60 game (more)

Could we see our Wii Miis on the 3DS?

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2691 days, 19 hours, 38 minutes ago

The question sounds so obvious that Captain Obvious may swoop down and punch me in the head, but hearing it straight from Nintendo would be better. While this isn't confirmation, we do have Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto talking about how they want to continue to allow gamers to use their Miis on other game systems going foward. (more)

In a sea of sequels, one of my biggest surprises at E3 2010 was ACE Team's Rock of Ages. Long story short, it's batsh*t crazy and I desperately want to try it out. Long story long, Tim has a preview of this bizarre take on the increasingly lifeless tower defense genre. (more)

Nintendo's Miyamoto says Miis could make the jump to the 3DS

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2691 days, 19 hours, 51 minutes ago
Thursday, July 08, 2010 8:06:12 AM GMT
Nintendo already dropped a hint that Miis could be heading to the 3DS by including some Mii-like characters in the Pilotwings demo at E3 last month, and Shigeru Miyamoto himself has now offered some further confirmation that Nintendo is at least looking at the possibility. Speaking with IGN this week, he says that it is "something that we're definitely giving consideration to," and that Nintendo wants to "continue to try to allow people to use their Miis on different Nintendo systems going forward." Android 2.2 (Froyo) versus iOS 4: the browser showdown (video)

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2691 days, 19 hours, 54 minutes ago

A little while back Google boldly claimed that Froyo would have the world's fastest mobile browser, but the lack of final software back then meant we'd had to tie up our itchy hands until now. And boy, it sure looks like it was worth the wait -- Ars Technica's JavaScript benchmarks show that not only is Froyo's browser almost three times faster than its Éclair counterpart, but it also beats iOS 4's Safari by at least two-fold. That said, numbers alone don't always reflect real-life performance -- especi... (more)

iPhone 4 gets outfitted with vintage SLR lens

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2691 days, 19 hours, 57 minutes ago
Thursday, July 08, 2010 7:59:57 AM GMT
Sure, the iPhone 4 may have a pretty great camera as far as phones go, but there's always room for improvement -- right? Continuing the great tradition of iPhones awkwardly outfitted with camera lenses, one intrepid individual has now come up with a contraption that will let you "attach" a full-size SLR lens to your iPhone 4. While complete details are a bit light, Technabob notes that the camera mount at the bottom of the rig is a Manfrotto pocket tripod -- so you at least have a place to start for bu... (more)

Now You Really Can Drink Like A Murloc

Drink mead, World of Warcraft fans? If you don't, you may want to start, then start drinking from one of these. It's a new entry in Taverncraft's line of steins and tankards (they've done Warhammer Online ones previously), and rather than go the dignified route and emblazon it with heraldry and heroic deeds, they've slapped some murlocs on the front and a rather fetching solid pewter murloc on the lid.
