Korean Gamers Are Faster Than A Speeding Bullet

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2720 days, 12 hours, 22 minutes ago
Tuesday, July 06, 2010 8:26:18 AM GMT
Do you think you could beat a pro-gamer from Korea at Starcraft or Warcraft? You can't. You won't. You don't have a chance in hell. This clip is from the excellent documentary The Hax Life, which takes a look at some pro gamers competing in the Korean capital, Seoul. It's at times touching, at times frightening, and at others, just mind-bending. (more)

A look at gaming's many revolutions

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2720 days, 12 hours, 24 minutes ago
Tuesday, July 06, 2010 8:24:46 AM GMT
Patriotism may not be my favorite thing ever, but I do love a good revolution. That's a big part of why I love the videogame industry. In television, movies and music, truly revolutionary moments are few and far between. In videogames, they hit every couple of years, if not sooner. No artistic medium that I know of has evolved this far, this quickly. Knowing that videogames are in a perpetual growth spurt makes scouring for gaming news every morning a daily exercise in excitement. (more)

Ape Escape 4 is coming to Europe

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2720 days, 12 hours, 25 minutes ago
Tuesday, July 06, 2010 8:23:14 AM GMT
This is almost a Captain Obvious post, but hey, I'll take any excuse to talk about Ape Escape 4 that I can get. Not seeing the game at E3 10 was easily one of my biggest disappointments of the show. Sony still seems resistant to doing anything with their PS1-era franchises, probably out of a desire to keep up their self-perceived "cutting edge" image. You'd think they look at all the money Nintendo's making off their +10-year-old franchises and get the hint; nostalgia sells. A lot well off +25-year-old ... (more)

UK Charts: Harry Potters and Ghost Warriors

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2720 days, 12 hours, 26 minutes ago
Tuesday, July 06, 2010 8:21:48 AM GMT
Oh sure, Daniel Radcliffe looks "cute" now, but just take a real good look at him. I give him fifteen more years before he looks like a pedophile. So, unsurprisingly, Lego Harry Potter is at the top of the chart. My own stepson wouldn't shut up about the bloody game so we had to buy it for him. I imagine many parents can tell you a similar story, so I'm not shocked at all to see this thing topping charts. (more)

iPhone 4: Largest 'console' launch ever?

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2720 days, 12 hours, 27 minutes ago
Tuesday, July 06, 2010 8:21:01 AM GMT
Yes, I'm with you. It's not a 'console' or anything even close to that. It's a phone in my mind. A phone that I use for music and Twitter. A portable sometimes gaming machine at best. The games? Sure, there's some that I really like. But I'm usually out to play games on a game system, with buttons and such. (more)

Microsoft claims 'unprecedented demand' for new Xbox 360

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2720 days, 12 hours, 30 minutes ago
Tuesday, July 06, 2010 8:17:54 AM GMT
Although Microsoft didn't provide specific sales figures (per usual), the company claims it's seeing "unprecedented demand" from retailers for its new Xbox 360 console. In a statement released following May's NPD results, Microsoft claimed a "significant sales spike" for its new Xbox 360 250GB "short" model, along with its older Arcade and Elite units (which both received a $50 price reduction). Console APB still in question, Realtime Worlds explains

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2720 days, 12 hours, 31 minutes ago
Tuesday, July 06, 2010 8:17:07 AM GMT
There was a time when Realtime Words' APB was planned for consoles, but as it fights for survival on PC retail and virtual shelves, it appears it still hasn't found the right publishing partner for a console version. Realtime Worlds Creative Director Dave Jones tells Eurogamer that a console version won't happen until it finds a publishing partner and works out several other logistics, including pricing and "running dedicated servers for console" MMOs. Xbox Live Deals of the Week: Mega Man 10, Scrap Metal, Death By Cube, and After Burner Climax

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2720 days, 12 hours, 32 minutes ago

If you're anything like us, you're spending today avoiding the family that only comes around once or twice a year and hanging out with the ol' Xbox 360 (preferably with air conditioning as well). And though we have tons of games from the unusually busy first half of this year to still play catch up with, who are we to turn down this week's Xbox Live Arcade deals? Out of the four titles -- Mega Man 10, Scrap Metal, Death By Cube, and After Burner Climax -- all but one are half off, and even that one (Scra... (more)

Fan fiction writers, gather round! Well, first, close out of all those Word documents you've been agonizing over for the past few months. You know the ones we're talking about. The ones which involve throbbing. And quivering. And Sonic the Hedgehog. Why not put your unique skill set to good (and infinitely less creepy) use, and participate in Blizzard's Global Writing Contest? (more)

Review: Crackdown 2

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2720 days, 12 hours, 43 minutes ago
Tuesday, July 06, 2010 8:05:38 AM GMT
As the always astute Chris Hecker once pointed out, the thing video games do best are power fantasies. While we're literally trying to rescue our family or kill the evil guy, the metaphorical (and arguably more important) journey is in watching our character grow from weakling to demigod, whether that's through the collection of the most powerful weapons or the fastest cars. The balance then is in making the literal journey just present enough that the metaphorical one means something. (more)

PlayStation 3 is Finally Not a Money Loser for Sony

Can you believe that the PlayStation 3 launched in 2006 at $599? And even at that price, Sony was taking a $200 hit on each one sold. In fact, Sony was still selling the consoles at a loss up until recently. Now, things are finally turning around at the $299 price point on the PS3 Slim. (more)

Fat Princess in-game tips teasing Zombie DLC

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2720 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes ago

Titan Studios didn't wait too long after the launch of its multiplayer PSN title, Fat Princess, before it started teasing new archetypes which would appear in the game's first major DLC release. Now that said content has finally launched, it seems Atomic Operations is wasting no time in teasing the next expansion for the game: One which might just involve waves of shambling undead. (more)

iPhone 4 Diamond Edition: white, unlocked, and $20k

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2720 days, 12 hours, 46 minutes ago

Looking for something a bit more eye-catching than a iPhone 4 with a wooden veneer? Then it looks like you can once again thank Stuart Hughes for throwing any subtlety to the wind and going all out with the so-called iPhone 4 Diamond Edition. As you can see, not only does the phone pack a smattering of diamonds (including a bedazzled Apple logo), but it's a white iPhone 4 (32GB, naturally), and unlocked for good measure. Of course, there's no guarantees you'll actually get it before white iPhone 4s becom... (more)

White PS3 Slim with 160GB HDD hits Japan July 29th, new 320GB HDD option

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2720 days, 12 hours, 48 minutes ago

Looks like we've (almost) solved the mystery of PlayStation 3's FCC-bound CECH-2501 models. Sony just announced a "classic white" PS3 Slim (as opposed to the "ceramic white" original) for Japan, model CECH-2500, coming July 29th with 160GB HDD. For 34,980 yen (about $400 translated to US currency) you can now start off with 320GB of storage in your "charcoal black" model -- not to worry, the aforementioned 160GB still retails for 29,980 yen ($342). So, when are we gonna see this elsewhere in the world, hm? (more)

Sengoku Basara screens, here they are, look at them

More screens for Sengoku Basara. Here they are. Look at them with your eyes. Let your brain process the date. Fun for all the family. After having played the game at E3, I'm quite looking forward to it. As you all know, I love a good hack n' slash title, and Sengoku Basara seems to be a massive improvement over Devil Kings. It's just a shame that the improvement has come after all the cool characters like Nobunaga have died off. Ah well. (more)

Toribash smacks WiiWare Europe upside the head next week

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2722 days, 11 hours, 42 minutes ago
Sunday, July 04, 2010 9:06:03 AM GMT
Anyway, the news here is that Toribash is finally making it to WiiWare, at least in Europe. Word from Nintendo of Europe is that the game will hit WiiWare next week. The game is set to cost 1,000 Wii points, which is a little steep for a game currently available for free on PC and Mac. Cave Story and Noitu Love 2 are amongst the few games that can get away with that sort of thing. Toribash? I'm not so sure. I suppose it all comes down to how many new features they add. (more)

New Super Mario Bros. Wii tops 15 million in sales

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2722 days, 11 hours, 44 minutes ago

New Super Mario Bros. Wii is kind of a big deal. Not only is it the first side-scrolling Mario game to allow for 4-player simultaneous co-op, but it also marked the triumphant return of "real" 2D Mario on home console. Super Paper Mario and Wario Land: Shake It! came first, but it was New Super Mario Bros. Wii that really brought the 2D series back to in full force to televisions everywhere. (more)

Kane and Lynch 2's Arcade Mode gets screens

We've already told you all about Kane and Lynch 2: Dog Days' multiplayer mode "Fragile Alliance," and I'm sure you're chomping at the bit to get some time with it. However, you might want to take a step back and get some practice in before you jump in with no experience. I'm talking about practice here, and what better way to practice than in the game's Arcade mode, which is the single player version of "Fragile Alliance." (more)

Madden NFL 11 videos preview AFC East and AFC West

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2722 days, 11 hours, 50 minutes ago
Sunday, July 04, 2010 8:58:00 AM GMT
Sales of Madden NFL 11 are set to kick off on August 10, and leading up to the title's launch, EA plans to release a series of videos highlighting the different divisions of the NFL. This week, we've got preview videos for the AFC East and AFC West, which you can find huddled up past the break. The team to beat in the AFC East is undoubtedly The Jets, who fell just shy of the AFC Championship game last year -- but don't discount The Patriots, who've still got plenty of weapons at their disposal.
