Dead Nation for the PSN is still happening

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2575 days, 3 hours, 26 minutes ago
Thursday, June 10, 2010 7:20:57 PM GMT
Remember Dead Nation? No? Can't blame you as the team working on the game has laid low about it since Gamescom last year. They're ready to talk about it again as they've released a brand new trailer full of sexy zombie action. Dead Nation kind of looks like a cross between Left 4 Dead and last year's other zombie downloadable, Zombie Apocalypse. Good combination? Well the game is at E3 next week and we'll be sure to let you know how the game plays then. (more)

USA Today brings us a detailed look at Rock Band 3. The brand new 25-key keyboard controller is also revealed. The keyboard can be used as a MIDI keyboard, and the note highway will shift so the correct keys are covered. New guitars are also going to be released along with Rock Band 3 that take advantage of the new Pro mode. One of the guitars will even be a fully functional Fender guitar! Expect improved UI functions too, such as drop-in-and-drop-out multiplayer and being able to change a song's diffic... (more)

Linden Labs has laid off almost a third of its employees

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2575 days, 3 hours, 31 minutes ago
Thursday, June 10, 2010 7:15:49 PM GMT
Second Life must be going through some hard times indeed. According to a press release, Linden Labs is cutting its workforce by roughly 30%. According to CEO Mark Kingdon, the restructuring will free the company to pursue new projects. Specifically, Kingdon made mention of 3D applications, which I'm sure will be delightful fun for all and migraine-inducing for me. In addition, they will be working to extend Second Life into other social networking systems. (more)

Review: Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 (Wii)

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2575 days, 3 hours, 41 minutes ago
Thursday, June 10, 2010 7:06:01 PM GMT
I've played a lot of golf games over the years, from the arcadey Hot Shots series to my all-time favorite, Links 2004. But I've never played anything quite like Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11. For someone new to the series on Wii, its MotionPlus controls aren't just a revelation -- they're the only way I want to play golf games from now on. (more)

Rumor: Tony Hawk: Shred will include snowboarding

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2575 days, 14 hours, 14 minutes ago

Tony Hawk: Shred is an actual thing that's coming, this much Activision itself confirmed. And we have it on good authority from our Joystiq Superspy™ that the latest game to bear the Tony Hawk name will not only let gamers shred pavement, but also some fresh powder: the game will incorporate snowboarding -- a first for the traditionally skateboarding-only series. Team Fortress 2 available on Mac Steam tomorrow

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2575 days, 14 hours, 17 minutes ago
Thursday, June 10, 2010 8:29:19 AM GMT
The Team Fortress 2 blog has revealed the impending arrival of one of Valve's biggest games to the Mac platform. Tomorrow, Mac-owning gamers will be able to join the Team Fortress 2 ... team. Well, Valve didn't even confirm that it is Team Fortress 2 that is being released tomorrow. Sure, it was on the Team Fortress 2 blog, and the post was topped by the above image of Team Fortress 2 characters, but really it could be any game whose title rhymes with "Speem Gortress." (more)

Alan Wake wanders into 'WAR,' a Poets of the Fall music video

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2575 days, 14 hours, 19 minutes ago
Thursday, June 10, 2010 8:27:24 AM GMT
We speculated that the live-action Alan Wake teaser that surfaced last week was promoting a new commercial or web short. It turned out to be a slick music video for "WAR," a song by Finnish rock band Poets of the Fall -- and one of the licensed tracks to feature in Remedy's atmospheric action game. The video features Alan Wake as portrayed by actor Ilkka Villi, who's basically the Milli Vanilli companion to voice actor Matthew Porretta. (more)

The live-action trailer for Dead Nation for which Sony put out a casting call last month has finally surfaced, showing off some of the real-life human drama associated with a fictional Zombocalypse. Watch as the trailer explores the deep, interpersonal relationships between the game's cast of multifaceted, intriguing characters, such as "Trucker Guy" and "Cheerleader" and "Mustachioed Police Officer." Then watch as they all get eaten. What a twist! (more)

Mega64 gets the lowdown on Rock Band 3's new logo

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2575 days, 14 hours, 27 minutes ago
Thursday, June 10, 2010 8:19:55 AM GMT
Oh, Mega64, is there any code you can't crack? First it was the mysterious Kojima teaser last year and now, the comedy troupe ponders on that mysterious new keyboard-like icon in the Rock Band 3 logo. They even find some similarities between Rock Band 3 and F3AR -- er, sorry, FEAR 3. It's some very high-brow deductive reasoning, as indicated in the classy image above. Head past the break to check out the video courtesy of IGN -- "solved 4 good," indeed. (more)

According to IGN, Zangief will soon join his street fighting brethren on the iPhone. You can see video proof after the break. The Russian wrestler, like Cammy, will arrive via free DLC at some point in the near future. In other news, if you can pull off a spinning piledriver without using the special attack button, you're officially done with video games. Congratulations, you win. (more)

Sony: The PSP Go Was Kind of An Experiment

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2575 days, 14 hours, 35 minutes ago

Amid speculation that Sony will launch a PSP2 at E3 next week, MCVUK asked SCEE president and CEO Andrew House about the success and sales of the PSP Go. House replied that one of the reasons the PSP Go was launched was to see what customers really wanted and because of this, the success can't be measured in sales. (more)

Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 'Rockstar' contest wraps up, neat apps ensue

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2575 days, 14 hours, 39 minutes ago
Thursday, June 10, 2010 8:07:40 AM GMT
The success of Windows Phone 7 as a commercially viable mobile platform will ultimately depend on a great many things, but one of the biggest factors might be its chops as a gaming setup -- so naturally, we're excited to see each and every WP7 game that gets previewed right now. In March, Microsoft kicked off its so-called Rockstar competition, where student teams competed to make awesome apps (games or otherwise) for the platform in their choice of Silverlight or XNA -- and the results of the competiti... Nintendo rather quietly announced earlier that as of July 11th, it will see the DSi XL in Midnight Blue. The new color model will cost $189.99 -- just like every other DSi XL -- and will also come with all the same installed software and apps. Yes, other than the color (we'll give them this, it's a pretty sweet shade of blue) this one's identical to every other DSi XL. (more)

PlayStation Network down for 'regularly scheduled maintenance' -- RDR posses take the day off

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2575 days, 15 hours, 11 minutes ago

Wondering why your murderous, alcohol-fueled rampage across the old Southwest has been interrupted? The PlayStation Network is taking a personal day for maintenance (it happens sometimes, even on services we pay for, so insert PSN+ rumors here) from 8 a.m. (PST) to 8:30 p.m. Turning on your PS3 for some Red Dead Redemption or other gaming in the interim displays the above message so for now, all of your Home friends will have to wait. In the meantime, Netflix streaming is still a go so queue up 3:10 to Y... (more)

Gibson's Rock Band lawsuit ends in settlement, one way or another

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2575 days, 15 hours, 12 minutes ago
Thursday, June 10, 2010 7:34:46 AM GMT
Back in 2008, Gibson Guitar hoped to cash in on the Rock Band craze with a slate of patent infringement lawsuits of dubious quality, and though the firm lost to Activision a year later, its suits against Harmonix, Electronic Arts, Viacom, and six major retailers stirred something in Nashville's rock gods. Though exact terms weren't disclosed, the parties reached a settlement in a Tennessee federal court this week, and plan to bring the lawsuit to an end by June 14th. Meanwhile, we hear Harmonix v. Kon... (more)

AT&T breach reveals 114,000 iPad owners' email addresses, including some elite customers

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2575 days, 15 hours, 12 minutes ago
Thursday, June 10, 2010 7:34:44 AM GMT
Uh oh. According to Valleywag, an AT&T security breach led to the exposure of 114,000 email addresses (and associated SIM / ICC identifiers) belonging to Apple iPad owners. A group of hackers calling themselves Goatse Security (be careful looking that one up) figured out a number of ICC-IDs and ran a script on AT&T's site through a faked iPad UserAgent, which would then return the associated addresses. Some of those affected were actually quite big names, including the CEOs of The New York Times ... (more)

Samsung: iPhone 4's retina display is nice, but it's no AMOLED

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2575 days, 15 hours, 16 minutes ago
Thursday, June 10, 2010 7:31:11 AM GMT
Samsung seems to have taken exception to a little sidenote made by Steve Jobs during his iPhone 4 announcement at WWDC10 this Monday. While waxing poetic on the virtues of IPS, Jobs let us know that he considers it an entirely superior display technology to OLED, and now the world's biggest display maker has a few words to say about it. According to a Samsung spokesperson, the high-res retina display on the iPhone 4 offers only a 3 to 5 percent advantage in sharpness over its own Galaxy S Super AMOLED sc... (more)

Following in the footsteps of its predecessor, Yakuza 4 will be making its way to the western market next spring, exclusively for the PlayStation 3, and this time Kazuma's got a posse. Released in March in Japan as Ryū ga Gotoku 4, Yakuza 4 is now heading to the west, as we thought it might when Sega indicated big numbers for Yakuza 3 in North America and Europe. (more)

In Praise Of Sticky Friction

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2576 days, 15 hours, 35 minutes ago

I've always been quite sensitive to certain types of friction. (I considered writing that sentence 10 different ways, and simply couldn't make it less risque than that.) I'm going to try to talk about why my friction-sensitivity makes me feel like I could probably direct a hit videogame. Or, at the very least, a good videogame. (more)
