'iPhone vs Android' report finds Apple has three times Google's market share

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2696 days, 5 hours ago
Sunday, June 06, 2010 8:18:42 AM GMT
It's oftentimes easy for us to get swept up in Android mania and forget that Google's mobile platform is still in its infancy. Then we get cold hard numbers like these -- showing iPhone OS owning 28 percent of the US smartphone market and closing in on RIM's leading 35 percent -- and we face up to the realization that Android handsets still account for less than one in every ten smartphones owned by Americans today. Either way, an Android 2.2 update has been made available for Motorola's all-conquering slider, and it awaits eager firmware upgraders at the download link below. Produced by the good folks at My Droid World, this includes almost everything you'll need to get your Froyo on in style, though it excludes WiFi support at this stage. Such is the way with unofficial upgrades, but if you really need consolation, there's a whole set of superuser privileges to explore a... (more)

The First Killzone 3 Trailer Is A Real Kick In The Face

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2698 days, 4 hours, 33 minutes ago
Friday, June 04, 2010 8:45:05 AM GMT
Celebrating the relaunch of the official Killzone website, Sony delivers the first trailer for Killzone 3, showing off the game's brutal new melee system. Looks painful! Michael McWhertor got his hands on Killzone 3's new melee attack system last month, and wasn't particularly impressed. Perhaps if Sony had shown him this rendered trailer, with its bone-crunching, slow-motion strikes he would have felt better about the whole thing. Or maybe just the trailer. (more)

Forced morality in games will never, ever work

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2698 days, 4 hours, 39 minutes ago
Friday, June 04, 2010 8:39:39 AM GMT
A man rides his horse swiftly along a dusty path, six shooter in hand, when he hears a cry in the distance. The sound grows closer, and a woman comes into view; she is visibly panicked. Soon, the source of her panic becomes clear. Behind her, four bobcats snarl and nip at her ankles, inching closer and closer to the poor, defenseless lady. The man knows what he must do, for he is a man of honor. He raises his six shooter, aims for the bobcats, and fires. (more)

Rumor: Harmonix working on dancing game for Natal

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2698 days, 4 hours, 43 minutes ago
Friday, June 04, 2010 8:35:32 AM GMT
Rock Band 3's already been confirmed as Harmonix's next project, but is it the only one? Probably not, and if Game Informer's sources are correct, the developer may also be working on a Natal-based dancing game. True or not, you don't need to like the idea, but it might be the best move for the developer. I can't explain the worldwide popularity of Ubisoft's Just Dance, but its success has proven one thing: people want to dance. Harmonix recently applied for licenses for a number of danceable tracks, in... (more)

Namco: Industry must choose: E3 or Gamescom

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2698 days, 4 hours, 59 minutes ago
Friday, June 04, 2010 8:19:30 AM GMT
As far as the games press goes, we really can't choose. We need to be there or we miss out. But the industry can, technically, and especially when two events are so close together. E3 is about a week away, but Gamescom is in August. To make matters worse, Tokyo Game Show is in September. Namco Bandai Partners VP, Olivier Comte, says that E3's return to the old days is bringing the industry back, but feels that they're going to have to choose between the two events. (more)

The Mummy? Yes, that one! The one with Abominable Snowmen (I'm calling dibs right here and now) and that weirdly charming guy who makes those oh-so-funny faces. It's being made into a free-to-play, browser-based MMO called The Mummy Online. Bigpoint and Schell Games -- who you might recognize thanks to CEO Jesse Schell's mindblowing GDC talk -- are working on getting it out during winter 2010. (more)

Co-op in Call of Duty: Black Ops will be its own thing

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2698 days, 5 hours, 39 minutes ago
Friday, June 04, 2010 7:39:17 AM GMT
More and more, we are starting to finally see cooperative modes that aren't literally the exact same levels from single-player but with support from a buddy. This is a damned good thing. Modern Warfare 2's Spec Ops mode was a smart blend of the two routes developers can take, which got me to thinking -- what's awaiting us in Call of Duty: Black Ops? Treyarch studio head Mark Lamia has some answers for us, courtesy of MTV Multiplayer. Here's how he views the various modes: (more)

Verizon: No iPhone in Immediate Future

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2698 days, 5 hours, 47 minutes ago
Friday, June 04, 2010 7:31:36 AM GMT
On the heels of a rumor that Verizon Wireless is testing a CDMA-capable Apple iPad on its network, a spokesman confirmed that the company has no plans to support the iPhone "in the immediate future." Given that AT&T's exclusivity deal with Apple carries on until 2012, the news shouldn't be surprising. With that said, rumors of a Verizon iPhone could still come to fruition once the contract expires. (more)

Same as it ever was: you can't tether an iPhone to the iPad

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2698 days, 5 hours, 50 minutes ago
Friday, June 04, 2010 7:28:54 AM GMT
This isn't so much news as it is a public service announcement: even in markets where iPhone tethering has launched, you've never been able to use it to connect to an iPad, and you won't be able to when AT&T flips the switch on tethering with the release of OS 4. That's clearly not AT&T's fault, it's Apple's -- the iPhone inexplicably supports only USB and Bluetooth for sharing its internet connection, even though jailbroken apps like MyWi prove that a WiFi connection is totally doable and countl... Hands-on: DC Universe Online

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2699 days, 4 hours, 36 minutes ago
Thursday, June 03, 2010 8:42:24 AM GMT
MMOs are at their best when you're gallantly fighting alongside compatriots, using abilities with a group of friends (or strangers) to topple bad guys and win epic loot. But let's face it -- even in a massively multiplayer online game, you can't always have a full party of helpful members with which to face your challenges. Sometimes you're up late, playing by yourself, and you've got to grind it out alone. (more)
