Judge Approves Midway Liquidation Plan

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2647 days, 4 hours, 27 minutes ago
Sunday, May 23, 2010 7:37:15 AM GMT
Formerly a household name in video games, the bankrupted publisher will end up paying creditors between 16 and 25 percent of what they were owed, under a plan approved by a Delaware judge on Friday. Midway was long gone before Friday's judgment, its assets bought up by Warner Bros. Entertainment last year in a transaction worth about $49 million. The distribution of those proceeds will give about $25 million to unsecured noteholders - owed $155 million - and $9.2 million to unsecured creditors, who were... (more)

Uncharted 2 Multiplayer Goes to The Lab for New Playlists

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2647 days, 4 hours, 27 minutes ago
Sunday, May 23, 2010 7:36:41 AM GMT
Next weekend, that is. Naughty Dog, the game's makers, will roll out a playlist called "The Lab" featuring some tinkered and tweaked gameplay variations but, more importantly, you earn double cash during the first run. The studio wants your feedback on the playlists and the settings, setting aside new threads on the community forum to gather input. Next weekend, May 28 to June 1, begins with a 2-on-2 team deathmatch, a first-to-25 contest (or 15 minutes, whichever comes first) "to prove your small-team ... (more)

PSA: Backbreaker demo available now for XBL Gold members

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2648 days, 3 hours, 14 minutes ago

NaturalMotion's Backbreaker isn't only special because it's the first sports videogame ever to use the Euphoria engine. Its simplified, pick-up-and-play control scheme is also notable, and in the tutorial above, you can learn how its passing -- controlled solely by the right analog stick -- works. (In case you missed the tutorial for the running game, you can check it out here.) (more)

NHL 11 to have real-time physics, Canadian Hockey League

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2648 days, 3 hours, 16 minutes ago
Saturday, May 22, 2010 8:48:05 AM GMT
The fall 2010 release of NHL 11 is still far off, but already, EA Sports is putting out bits and pieces of information on the game. Earlier this week, EA Canada updated the franchise's Facebook page with the screenshot you see above: it's a hip check that's meant to show off the new real-time physics engine in NHL 11. As someone who's familiar with the series, I can tell you that hit doesn't look like the canned hip check animation of NHL games past, so it certainly appears promising. (more)

Singularity shows off the Deadlock feature

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2648 days, 3 hours, 19 minutes ago
Saturday, May 22, 2010 8:44:37 AM GMT
Singularity is just full of neat ways to kill people. For example, take a look at the Deadlock feature. It's a ball of energy that slows down anything that gets caught up within it. It also doubles as a defense tool that can slow down enemy fire. Oh, the joys of technology. It is a great aid to us all until the day some evil bastard figures out a way to make a weapon like the one in Singularity. Or even worse, robot fire ants. That would just suck. (more)

Killzone 3 revealed in next GamePro -- and it's 3-D

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2648 days, 3 hours, 25 minutes ago
Saturday, May 22, 2010 8:39:22 AM GMT
One of Sony's major E3 titles has been revealed slightly ahead of time. Sony and Guerrilla Games are delivering on Jack Tretton's impromptu promise: Killzone 3 is real, and you'll be able to see it for yourself in the July issue of GamePro, on shelves June 1. A subscriber spilled the Helghan beans on the GameSpot forums, also revealing that the game is playable in 3-D, with the effect requiring the use of glasses (oh, and a 3-D-capable television). GamePro has confirmed the cover story to Joystiq. (more)

Pinball Heroes may be an odd way of cashing in on Sony's most successful franchises, but it works. The original release debuted on the PSP (via PlayStation Network) last year, and featured four tables based on Uncharted, PAIN, Hot Shots Golf and High Velocity Bowling. A new expansion pack, available next week on the PlayStation Store, will add four more tables to the mix: Fat Princess, Wipeout HD Fury, ModNation Racers and MotorStorm. (more)

Sony offering PSP developers code to 'slow down' piracy

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2648 days, 3 hours, 34 minutes ago
Saturday, May 22, 2010 8:30:05 AM GMT
Sony's senior vice president of publisher relations, Rob Dyer, has always been vocal about the "biggest problem" that plagues the PSP: Piracy. However, a new endeavor by the platform holder may offer renewed hope in the continued battle against illegal downloads. Dyer told Gamasutra that Sony has been helping developers implement some kind of protective code, potentially offering "a 60-day shelf life" before a game inevitably "gets hacked." (more)

Review: Red Dead Redemption (single-player)

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2648 days, 3 hours, 39 minutes ago
Saturday, May 22, 2010 8:25:05 AM GMT
Although Red Dead Redemption, Rockstar San Diego's long-awaited open-world game, may look nothing like GTA IV, the two easily invite comparison. Like GTA IV, Red Dead Redemption is an incredibly powerful, polished sandbox game. But, it also carries many of the same flaws as its Liberty City counterpart. While set in drastically different periods, the similarities between these two games cannot be ignored: from gameplay mechanics to mission design to narrative direction. While not cosmetically apparent, e... (more)

Shine a light on Alan Wake for $49, get $10 bonus credit

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2648 days, 3 hours, 40 minutes ago

I sat there staring at the screen, unable to believe my aching eyes. Had I had too much to drink, or was this real? The Amazon checkout cart read $49.99, and it was definitely Alan Wake sitting in the basket. That alone didn't really frighten me. What tipped me over the edge was the $10 bonus credit on a future video game purchase. (more)

Irrational releases the original BioShock pitch document

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2648 days, 3 hours, 47 minutes ago
Saturday, May 22, 2010 8:17:12 AM GMT
Every once in a while, our very plane of existence will be split into two by a major decision affecting the course of history, creating what scientists refer to as a "parallel universe." Less frequently, a window will open up which lets us catch a quick glimpse into the world of what might have been. Irrational Games threw open just such a window yesterday by releasing the pitch document for BioShock, which was planned to be a very different monster from the game we all know and love. Specifically, a sea... (more)

Froyo Update: Carriers Control Who Has Tethering

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2648 days, 3 hours, 48 minutes ago
Saturday, May 22, 2010 8:16:16 AM GMT
We should have seen this one coming: that cool tethering feature Google is inserting into Android 2.2 (Froyo) will be controlled by carriers. Given that current Android owners are using tethering apps and (typically) not having to pay an extra fee, it was assumed that it would be more of the same with the new update--sans the 3rd-party software. Unfortunately, that's not the case. (more)

Rockstar: Bad Parents Buy Our Games for Kids

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2648 days, 3 hours, 50 minutes ago
Saturday, May 22, 2010 8:13:59 AM GMT
Rockstar Games recently came out and spoke against parents who purchase its games for their children. The retaliation comes at the heels of its latest release, Red Dead Redemption, now heading to stores worldwide. Like most of Rockstar's games, Red Dead Redemption is rated "M" for violence, language, drug use, and other adult content. And like the games preceding it, Rockstar will undoubtedly receive flak for the content despite its ratings, even from parents. (more)
