We've been intrigued by the Square Payment System since it first ditched its Squirrel costume back in 2009, and now it appears we're on the eve (or eve of the eve, or pretty close anyway) to its release for not only the iPhone, but for the iPad and for Android as well. (more)

Sony announces faster Memory Stick Pro-HG Duo HX, children's eyes light up with glee

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2773 days, 15 hours, 33 minutes ago

Can you handle an even faster Memory Stick? It's the Memory Stick Pro-HG Duo HX series, which Sony is speeding up but, curiously, isn't tacking any more random letters to the already ridiculous name. The cards offer maximum capacity of 32GB and transfer rates of 30MB/s, and while Sony doesn't indicate whether that's a read or a write speed (we're guessing read) they should handily out-class even high-class SD-based storage options. FCC task force seeks to squash 'bill shock,' give you the 411 on impending overages

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2773 days, 15 hours, 41 minutes ago

Call us crazy, but it seems as if the FCC has been earning its keep of late, and the toiling continues today with an effort meant to address "bill shock." For those unaware, bill shock is a phenomena on par with bitter beer face in terms of significance, and it typically occurs when you accidentally roam internationally, text well beyond your monthly limit or burn through your minutes within the first week of your billing period. Apple promises to fix iPad WiFi issues in future software update

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2773 days, 15 hours, 48 minutes ago

Not satisfied with Apple's previous "fixes" for those pesky WiFi issues with the iPad? Then it looks like the folks in Cupertino have you covered, or will soon -- the company recently updated its support document on the issue to say that "Apple will also address remaining Wi-Fi connectivity issues with a future iPad software update." Interestingly, Apple also now suggests adjusting the screen brightness if you're experiencing the problem, which is a fix that was previously discovered by some users on the... (more)

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2775 days, 3 hours, 49 minutes ago

Japan isn't only The Land of the Rising Sun. It's also The Land of Xbox 360 Indifference. There must be a way to double weekly consoles sales. Turns out, there is. Well, at least once. In last week's hardware sales tally, the Xbox 360 sold 2,214 units in Japan. By comparison, there were 28,758 PSPs sold and 25,629 PS3s sold. Only the PSPgo at 1,544 units sold and the PS2 at 1,490 units lost to the Xbox 360. (more)

Obama Doesn't Know How To Work An Xbox Or A PlayStation

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2775 days, 3 hours, 52 minutes ago

Addressing graduating students at Hampton University, Virginia on the weekend, US President Barack Obama has spoken out on the challenges facing government in an information age, one dominated by "Xboxes and PlayStations". "You're coming of age in a 24/7 media environment that bombards us with all kinds of content and exposes us to all kinds of arguments, some of which don't always rank all that high on the truth meter," he said. Wii at Last, Wii at Last, Thank God Almighty ...

Monday, May 10, 2010 6:20:31 AM GMT
Wii at Last, Wii at Last, Thank God Almighty ... So President Obama, once again, dinged video games in a speech. I'd rather send a more uplifting message, where a console is judged not by the content of its games, but the color of its skin. As we know, today is an historic day* in America - the first black Wii is available for purchase. Here's Black Nerd Comedy's take on what this means for our post-racial society. There's a Big Free Ad for some t-shirts he's hawking at the end; we don't endorse that a... (more)

Wii has 79 million sellers, but what are they?

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2775 days, 3 hours, 56 minutes ago
Monday, May 10, 2010 6:18:43 AM GMT
Nintendo had a thing recently where they said some stuff to keep their investors happy. It was at this thing that they announced Wii Party and that Apple is their future enemy. They also mentioned that as of March 2010, 79 Wii games have shipped 1 million or more copies worldwide. A year earlier, that number was at 54. As you math-fans in the audience have already concluded, that means that in the past 12 months, 25 more Wii games have managed to achieve that magic, arbitrary, badge of success known as "... (more)

Since Super Meat Boy was first announced, it's inspired two comic books, plenty of stuffed "animals", and an educational series of posts on game design, among other things. The US army even sent the game's developers a flag. Not bad for a game that hasn't even been released yet. (more)

2K on the challenge of marketing BioShock 2

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2775 days, 4 hours, 5 minutes ago
Monday, May 10, 2010 6:09:43 AM GMT
Speaking with the[a]listdaily, 2K Games' Matt Gorman and Tom Bass discussed the marketing strategy behind BioShock 2. With BioShock being one of the best games of 2007, Bass saw its legacy as both "a blessing and a curse" for the sequel. The challenge was twofold, according to Bass, who said that 2K had to sell the game to fans who "weren't convinced that they needed a sequel" and also to newcomers who might not have been familiar with the original. Our Enslaved: Odyssey to the West trailer is your trailer

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2775 days, 4 hours, 9 minutes ago

The most recent episode of GameTrailers TV brought with it the first moving pictures associated with Ninja Theory's upcoming Chinese fable-turned-video game, Enslaved: Odyssey to the West. Our initial thoughts on the trailer is that it loses a significant amount of points for sheer bossiness ("My something is your something," the video frequently informs us), but regains said points for the protagonist's creative methods of ladder navigation. Apple starts rolling out international iPad pre-orders -- Engadget

Monday, May 10, 2010 6:01:16 AM GMT
What's that, you say? The iPad pre-order button is now propagating itself over on Apple's global assortment of online stores? The Australian retail is already taking your hard-earned change, while we just saw first-hand the UK variant go down, go up with an iPad pre-order icon on the front page, then subsequently hidden again behind a yellow sticky note within minutes of this writing. We imagine the rest of the stores will be following suit (if they haven't already). (more)

Oh sure, you've seen your disgustingly hairy cousin solve a Rubik's Cube in 3 minutes and 13.4 seconds, and we've seen quite a few sophisticated robots do it in far less time. But in the latest episode of "Yes, Droid Really Does," we've got Motorola's darling solving a Lego-encased Cube in just over 24 seconds. Let's recap: a Droid, a Mindstorms NXT monstrosity, a Rubik's Cube and faux techno. Is there any chance you aren't clicking through to watch this video? (more)

Olympus dishes silver PEN E-P2 Micro Four Thirds camera -- Engadget

Monday, May 10, 2010 5:57:38 AM GMT
Look, we're not saying Olympus' original all-black PEN E-P2 had no retro whatsoever in its blood, but you'll be hard-pressed to convince us that this newer, silver-er model doesn't have a whole lot more. Nearly six months after the (admittedly overpriced) Micro Four Thirds camera got pushed through the ringer, Olympus has decided that the world needs a second color option, though outside of the hue, there's no difference whatsoever between the two models. The pun is so obvious it practically insults your intelligence, but we just can't help ourselves -- the iPad has just gotten a little more magical. Using the BTstack application that brought Bluetooth mouse support to iPhone, enterprising individuals discovered the same technique works on a jailbroken iPad as well, and hooked up Apple's own Magic Mouse to show it off to the world. Mind you, while this implementation does look quite useful, we do detect the barest hint of lag -- so it may not be your wea... (more)
