Transformers: War for Cybertron trailer is like hot sex

Friday, May 07, 2010 8:56:36 AM GMT
Activision has today released a new multiplayer trailer for Transformers: War for Cybertron and it has made me wet my knickers a little bit. It shows off the character creation system, and the different classes that can be chosen when battling in the name of your chosen faction. It's not reinventing the wheel, but it looks like a load of fun. (more)

I've lost count of the amount of screenshots we've posted for Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom, but a game that looks so potentially lovely certainly needs a little extra spotlight. Here are the latest images for what appears to be Namco's answer to The Last Guardian. (more)

Call of Duty has delivered 17M map packs, but continued success 'only' through retail, Kotick says

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2661 days, 17 hours, 12 minutes ago
Friday, May 07, 2010 8:49:47 AM GMT
Speaking during an investor call today, Activision CEO Bobby Kotick reflected on the publisher's multi-pronged strategy behind the immense success of the Call of Duty franchise. A key -- but still growing -- element has been digital content distribution in the form of downloadable map packs. "Life-to-date on the Call of Duty franchise, we have digitally delivered almost 17 million map packs, which doesn't include the PS3 Modern Warfare 2 downloadable content that just launched," Kotick said. "To date, o... (more)

Guitar Hero 6, another DJ Hero coming this fall

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2661 days, 17 hours, 14 minutes ago
Friday, May 07, 2010 8:47:59 AM GMT
Activision has confirmed on an earnings call today that Guitar Hero 6 will be on store shelves sometime this fall, with a new DJ Hero game coming soon after. The music game market is a changing place, admitted CEO Bobby Kotick -- it will "continue to compress," with fewer titles and brands finding success. Activision has "moved from the sell-through of higher-priced peripherals," and its new plan is for "improved economics on a higher percentage of software sales." (more)

Dragon Age Darkspawn Chronicles trailer kills the Wardens

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2661 days, 17 hours, 17 minutes ago

Dragon Age: Origins is great and all, but it's a little too goody two-shoes, if you ask us. Thankfully, some new DLC is set to cater to our evil side. Darkspawn Chronicles will allow players to step into the grotesque, mud-soaked shoes of Ferelden's evil inhabitants and play out an alternate scenario: What if the good guys never won? (more)

Video: Serious Sam HD brings us The House of Sam

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2661 days, 17 hours, 19 minutes ago
Friday, May 07, 2010 8:42:56 AM GMT
There are times when it feels like some video games have a religious following. The latest trailer -- if you can call it that -- for Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter illustrates what a real video game religion would be like. In short, it's kind of scary, in the way that only televangelists can be. Watch the video, and discover why Sam is the way. (more)

Remedy looking to improve facial animation for Alan Wake DLC

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2661 days, 17 hours, 21 minutes ago
Friday, May 07, 2010 8:40:49 AM GMT
Zombies may have been the scariest things in (the truly excellent) Alan Wake. No, we're not talking about the shadow-infested Taken but rather the main characters themselves. While Remedy Entertainment's Markus Maki admits in a forum post that "it's a complex problem trying to dodge the Uncanny Valley," many of the characters in Alan Wake's cutscenes land squarely in the Valley, giving them that just-this-side-of-creepy zombie death mask that we all know and love. Is the iPad killing netbook sales? Probably not

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2661 days, 17 hours, 24 minutes ago
Friday, May 07, 2010 8:37:44 AM GMT
Inexpensive, compact netbooks were all the rage during the recent economic downturn, and the product segment enjoyed explosive growth over that period. However, that growth rate started falling heavily at the end of 2009; in April 2010, netbook sales only grew a mere 5 percent. Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty says the iPad is to blame for the stalled growth, but it seems more likely that netbooks have merely saturated their niche in the market. (more)

Microsoft Patch Tuesday for May 2010: two bulletins

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2661 days, 17 hours, 27 minutes ago
Friday, May 07, 2010 8:35:34 AM GMT
According to the Microsoft Security Response Center, Microsoft will issue two Security Bulletins addressing two vulnerabilities on Tuesday. It will also host a webcast to address customer questions about the bulletins the following day (May 12 at 11:00 am PST, if you're interested). Both of the vulnerabilities are rated "Critical," and they earned their rating through a remote code execution impact, meaning a hacker could potentially gain control of an infected machine. At least one of the two patches ... (more)

The plan is expected to change the way the FCC defines broadband without adding additional regulations, forcing phone companies, wireless carriers, and cable companies to treat all Internet traffic equally, and not block websites or throttle connections. Opera wades into Flash debate, says it 'makes very little sense' for video

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2661 days, 17 hours, 43 minutes ago

Opera Software already caused quite a stir with the release of the iPhone version of its browser, and it looks like it's now starting to make itself heard in one of the biggest browser-related debates going. Speaking with Tech Radar, Opera's product analyst Phillip Grønvold started out with something of a diplomatic approach by saying that "today's internet content is dependent on Flash" and "if you remove Flash you do not have today's internet," and for that reason Opera needs to support Flash. Microsoft and Verizon might think all the kids want to do with their new Kin phones is pay absurd data rates for a half-baked Twitter experience, but it turns out Generation Upload is still actually just Generation Text Message. That's at least the word according to a Pew Internet Research survey published on April 20th and neatly summed up by a new Flowlogic infographic published today -- only 23 percent of American teenagers with cellphones use social networks with their phones, while 72 percent of all... Seems that April 6th ship date that GameStop posted back in March was a bit off, but hey -- beggars can't be choosers, yeah? SanDisk has just announced that it's now shipping the planet's first licensed Xbox 360 USB flash drive, which just became useful for easily transferring gamertags, game saves, map packs, Arcade downloads, etc. from one console to another. The device is pre-configured for plug-and-play, and SanDisk is even throwing in a one-month subscription to Xbox LIVE Gold for good measure. Natu... (more)

Nintendo's black Wii console arrives early at Best Buy

Typical, isn't it? A full four days before these things are supposed to go on sale to the North American masses, an image of Nintendo's black Wii console has leaked from none other than Best Buy. This here shipment was actually received in the Great White North, but we're more than confident that similar packages are hitting the shipping docks of Best Buy stores everywhere here in the US, too. You'll notice that giant "Do Not Sell Before 05/09/2010" sticker there in the lower-right, but as we've seen in ... (more)

Google Chrome: faster than a flying potato

Google's never been shy to make claims that Chrome is the fastest browser on the planet, but it's truly pulled out all the stops to drive that point home for its latest beta. Rather than rely on some simple benchmarks, Google decided to test Chome against some other things that are fast -- namely, a potato cannon, sound waves, and lightning. We won't spoil all the surprise for you, but you can rest assured that Chrome comes out looking pretty good, and that everything else gets a little messy. Head on pa... (more)

Yeah, I don't have it in me today. You'll get no clever medical tie-in within this write up. I was almost feeling a headline like Scrub In For New Screens from Trauma Team or something like that. I killed that before it happened. Despite my lack of motivation for puns, I have plenty for telling you about upcoming Wii medical game Trauma Team, which we gave an 8.5 (Buy it!) review score late last month. Crysis 2 will be a 'Halo Killer' according to EA

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2663 days, 5 hours, 23 minutes ago
Wednesday, May 05, 2010 8:39:32 PM GMT
Didn't the term "Halo Killer" stop being cool five years ago? Apparently not, with Electronic Arts' Frank Gibeau invoking the perpetually false term while bigging up Crytek's big shooter sequel, Crysis 2. In fact, Gibeau quite frankly states that the team is actively trying to craft one of these so-called killers. "...We were trying to craft a Halo Killer, you know a product that would squarely go after what Bungie built with our partners at Crytek," he explains. "So the Crysis 2 product is spectacular,...
