Interview: Bungie discusses Activision, its 'new universe,' and what happens to Reach

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2672 days, 5 hours, 38 minutes ago
Friday, April 30, 2010 8:04:19 AM GMT
If it seems like all you've read about today is Bungie, well ... that's probably not far from the truth. Whether it's information about the highly anticipated Halo Reach beta – whose early "friends and family" access began today (giveaway here!) – to some unique Halo Reach swag to the news that the now independent developer has partnered with headline hogger Activision, it's Bungie's world today. We spoke with Bungie's Brian Jarrard and Joseph Staten about everything from their choice of Activision, to ... (more)

Bungie: We had to break through Infinity Ward 'noise' for Activision news

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2672 days, 5 hours, 40 minutes ago
Friday, April 30, 2010 8:02:12 AM GMT
Though many have speculated that today's Bungie-Activision partnership announcement was timed to help distract from the ongoing exodus from Activision darling Infinity Ward, the Halo dev insists that wasn't the case. In fact, Bungie's Joseph Staten said the developer was more concerned with the effect the Infinity Ward news could have on Bungie's own announcement. (more)

Friday, April 30, 2010 8:00:57 AM GMT
Japan may be as confused by Square Enix's Nier as we are -- but it would appear that PS3 owners are answering their questions about the action RPG title firsthand, by purchasing it. The PS3 version, Nier Replicant, is the best-selling title for the week of April 19.25, with 60,000 units sold, according to Gpara's early estimate of Media Create sales rankings. (more)

Iwata Asks Treasure about Sin & Punishment: Star Successor

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2672 days, 5 hours, 44 minutes ago
Friday, April 30, 2010 7:58:03 AM GMT
In case you missed Siliconera's translation of the Iwata Asks interview with Treasure about Sin & Punishment: Star Successor, Nintendo of America has posted its own translation. And if you have read it, you'll appreciate Nintendo's updated translation of Iwata's statement that the N64 "was a machine that was hard to create things for and didn't work at all." Now that semi-infamous line -- probably more accurately -- states that "If you didn't do it well, it wouldn't work at all." (more)

Civilization creator Sid Meier has given the thumbs-up to social gaming by describing the genre as an exciting "new frontier." "[But] I don't think it replaces any other forms of gaming. It just is attractive to a different type of gamer...and enriches the world of gaming as opposed to one thing replacing the other," Meier told IndustryGamers. (more)

Jon Stewart Slams Apple over Gizmodo

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2672 days, 5 hours, 57 minutes ago
Friday, April 30, 2010 7:45:05 AM GMT
Wednesday night Jon Stewart planted behind his desk on The Daily Show and blasted Apple over the whole Gizmodo raid. Naturally he takes a comical route throughout the entire report, holding up the iPad to his ear and saying that he likes to tell the kids he's shrinking. He also admitted that he rarely does product endorsement (unlike American Idol), so covering the Apple issue was supposedly his personal address to a company he's admired for decades. (more)

Valve promised that Steam on Mac would arrive in April. As you're no doubt aware, April is nearly over. Does that make Steam... vaporware? Not quite. Put away the Caruso sunglasses for two more weeks, because our friends at Joystiq just received a one-line email reading: "Valve today announced the public release of Steam for the Mac is May 12. Please stay tuned for more information." Oh well -- at least you're not waiting for Steam on Linux, and you can always stock up on Razer peripherals while you endu... (more)

iPhone tethering on AT&T still waiting on better network performance

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2673 days, 7 hours, 21 minutes ago

AT&T's own Ralph de la Vega mentioned as early as November of 2008 that you'd be able to tether your iPhone to your computer and use it as a modem "soon," but here we are some ten months after the initial announcement of official tethering support in the platform and there's no sign of it. Considering that many iPhone carriers around the world deployed it as soon as Apple had it ready -- and many more came online over the months to follow -- it seems that AT&T's silence on the issue has spoken ... Objects in Chinavasion's Video Glasses may be cheaper than they appear

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2673 days, 7 hours, 23 minutes ago

Certainly, if we're going to live in a future where console jockeys and other cyberpunk-types run amok in virtual reality dreamscapes, we're going to have to start seeing more cut-rate video eyewear. For most cowboys, dropping $800 on something by Vuzix is just not an option. Luckily, the gang at Chinavasion have recently sourced some generic, relatively inexpensive "Video Eyeglasses." Priced at $135 (with the cost dropping when you buy at bulk) these bad boys feature a simulated display size of forty i... (more)

8-bit arcade guitar sounds (and looks) like a little piece of nerd heaven

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2673 days, 7 hours, 24 minutes ago

The hand built, 8-bit "arcade guitar" that you see above is the result of a DIY senior project, and it's a pretty cool accomplishment. There's not a ton of detail about how it was constructed, but we know that it's got an FPGA (field-programmable gate array) for logic and function, strings and a joystick for adjusting the pitch, and it also boasts selectable waves and save banks. Most importantly, however, the final product sounds really, really good -- and we'd advise you to check the video below. (more)
