Adobe's Flash Player 'Gala' OS X preview tested: results may vary

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2642 days, 25 minutes ago
Thursday, April 29, 2010 6:13:39 AM GMT
So we just put a few minutes aside to put Adobe's new "Gala" build of Flash 10.1 through its paces on our latest-generation Core i5 and i7 15-inch MacBook Pros here, and the results are a little confusing to say the least. On our i7 equipped with the high-res display and 512MB GeForce GT 330M, processor utilization playing a 1080p sample video on YouTube dropped by a third to a half on average -- not bad -- with Safari 4.0.5 besting Firefox 3.6.4 by a smidge. Our i5 saw strangely different numbers, thoug... (more)

Do Team Fortress 2, only set it in the Wild West. Looks simple on paper, but is it really that easy to copy Valve's successful formula for multiplayer shooters? Lead & Gold: Gangs of the Wild West is a team-based online shooter, where you can play as either the red or blue side, and then take on your opponents in a variety of objective-based levels across a bunch of different of maps. You can choose from different classes, each with different weapons and abilities, and the game has a clean, stylised... (more)

Nice Guys, Stressed Ladies And The Curious Ways They Play Video Games

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2642 days, 33 minutes ago
Thursday, April 29, 2010 6:05:29 AM GMT
A galpal and I are discussing video games over cocktails at a bar. Well, kind of. She's trying to tell me why she plays FarmVille, and in the course of the discussion I find out her life is a mess. This new acquaintance of mine and I have recently bonded over our fondness for farming simulators. I'm trying to explain to her how my personal favorites, the Harvest Moon games – as much life simulators as farm simulators – are and aren't like her FarmVille favorite. (more)

Vanquish gets a bunch of pretty awesome screenshots

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2642 days, 41 minutes ago
Thursday, April 29, 2010 5:57:48 AM GMT
Vanquish may look like Platinum's answer to Gears of War, but if these screenshots indicate one thing, it's that the studio's third-person-shooter isn't going to be your average cover-based clone of Epic's smash hit. The images contained in this gallery seem to show that Vanquish is to shooters what Bayonetta was to action games -- and it's balls-out mental. (more)

Review: 2010 FIFA World Cup

After receiving a quick pass at the top of the box in a qualifying match against Denmark, Albanian striker Hamdi Salihi fired a neat ball across keeper Thomas Sørensen into the bottom corner of the goal. In the midst of his celebrations, I held down the left bumper on my controller and toggled the right stick back and forth, prompting Salihi into a series of -- for lack of a better word -- jump kicks, the last of which hit defender Daniel Agger in the face. Here's the extended version of the live-action Halo: Reach trailer

Yesterday, Microsoft and Bungie premiered a 60-second live-action Halo: Reach clip. After the hyperventilating subsided, our resident Halo fanboy Hamza Aziz posted it for all to see. The nerd even said the trailer didn't do "the fiction some justice" because it didn't show the "Birth of the Spartan" in detail. (more)

Free copy of Prototype with your Singularity purchase

On June 29, Raven Software's Singularity finally hits shelves. Here's the best part -- according to G4, if you buy it on the Xbox 360, you'll get Prototype for free. The deal, a mail-in offer, reminds me a bit of the "Buy Guitar Hero 5, get Guitar Hero Van Halen" for free deal Activision ran late last year. The difference here is that while Van Halen was of questionable quality, Prototype is by most accounts a pretty good game. Hell, our own Jim Sterling even thought it was "blatantly better than inFamo... (more)

Real men can look forward to RayStorm HD next week

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2642 days, 1 hour, 3 minutes ago
Thursday, April 29, 2010 5:35:44 AM GMT
Surprise! Next week, Xbox LIVE Arcade is getting RayStorm HD. It's also releasing on PlayStation Network, but only in Japan, for some wild reason. You clever PlayStation 3 owners surely know how to get around such obstacles by now, don't you? The price has been set at 1200 Microsoft Points ($15), which will probably seem reasonable to anyone who knows what RayStorm actually is. For the average dude scrolling down the list of recent XBLA games, I'm not so sure. (more)

Microsoft wants Natal to invade all aspects of life

In what should not come as much of a surprise, Microsoft has reaffirmed its belief that Natal will be useful in everyday, tech-oriented life, not just for playing videogames. Speaking to executives in Columbia this week (talk about an all-time alibi), CEO Steve Ballmer praised the device for its abilities. "The technology actually is very general purpose, and we'll see come into the rest of our lives pretty soon," Ballmer said, after mentioning how Natal was, in his mind, "the most exciting product" the ...
