MSI's customizable GX640 gaming notebook now shipping

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2706 days, 22 hours, 11 minutes ago

MSI's gaming laptops have looked the same for years, but we aren't going to judge. As Mother always told us, it's what's inside that counts, and the new GX640 -- now stateside after a two month vacation in Europe -- is quite the upgrade. That familiar red-and-black chassis now houses a 2.26GHz Core i5-540M alongside 4GB of DDR3 memory, and the 1680 x 1050 LCD display is driven by a Mobility Radeon HD 5850 for mondo graphical performance. 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, a six-cell battery and a 500GB, 7200RPM HDD r... HD 101: 3D FAQ

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2706 days, 22 hours, 12 minutes ago
Friday, April 23, 2010 7:57:40 PM GMT
While not everyone is sold on 3D at home yet -- or even in the theater -- most still have at least a few questions, and in the past year or so we've heard 'em all. So we figured we might as well share all the questions and the answers in one easy to read 3D FAQ. This is by no means comprehensive, but thanks to the wonders of the internet if we missed something it isn't too late to ask in the comments and watch in wonder as the post magically gets updated. Nikon Coolpix P100 reviewed, found to contain oodles of zoom and superb movie mode

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2707 days, 22 hours, 21 minutes ago
Thursday, April 22, 2010 7:48:15 PM GMT
If there is such a thing as a no-compromise point and shooter, the Coolpix P100 might just be it. It throws a back-illuminated 10 megapixel CMOS sensor in behind a 26x optical zoom lens, and supplements them with the hardware to record 1080p video at 30fps, with stereo mics pulling in sound, or full-resolution photos at a stunning 10fps clip. Throw in the articulating display on the back and you might already be asking where to buy one. Not so fast, though, as the Photography Blog guys have some notes fo... (more)

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2707 days, 22 hours, 23 minutes ago
Thursday, April 22, 2010 7:46:46 PM GMT
We're not quite sure why it's taken Microsoft so long to release it to the general public, but anyone with Windows 7 and a touchscreen will no doubt nonetheless be glad to know that the previously OEM-only Windows 7 Touch Pack is now available as a free download. That includes touch-enabled favorites like Microsoft's Surface Globe and Surface Collage, as well as a handful of games including the Pong-inspired Rebound and the "tranquil" Garden Pond. All set? Then hit up the source link below to find the 23... (more)

European PSN releases for April 22

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2707 days, 22 hours, 28 minutes ago
Thursday, April 22, 2010 7:41:30 PM GMT
There's a whole gang of playable content to get excited about in this week's European PSN update, such as Lead and Gold, After Burner Climax, the Lost Planet 2 multiplayer demo and UNO on the PSP. However, we'd make a strong case that the highlight of this most recent batch of additions isn't playable at all. We're speaking, of course, of the Sonic The Hedgehog comic from Archie Comics. Think we're joking? Look, right there, on the cover: "The World's Most Way Past Cool Comic!" How can you say no to that? (more)

Monsters (Probably) Stole My Princess hits PSN today

If you're a fan of platform jumping, uncertainty, and radical injustices, you might be a fan of the most recent addition to the PSP (and PS3) Minis platform: Monsters (Probably) Stole My Princess. The game puts you in the shoes of the accusatory Duke, who spends his days climbing platforms while beating the crap out of his underlings whom he's positive have absconded with his soul mate. Probably. In all likelihood. Perhaps. (more)

Live-action Alan Wake prequel premieres on Xbox Live April 25

Thursday, April 22, 2010 7:39:47 PM GMT
If Alan Wake's TV show-like presentation isn't, well, enough like a TV show for you, here's some good news: next week, the first episode in a six-part live-action Alan Wake series will be available on Xbox Live. Bright Falls, shot on location in Oregon, acts as a prequel to the events in the game -- which hopefully means that at least some weirdness was taking place in the game's location before the arrival of Mr. Wake. Otherwise, we'll be watching six episodes about a really pleasant town. Allaying the ... (more)

Microsoft confirms Bayonetta/Forza 3 bundle for Japan

Thursday, April 22, 2010 7:38:04 PM GMT
Microsoft is putting on its best marketing face to try and sell some Xbox 360s in Japan, hence a new Xbox 360 Elite bundle -- last week's rumored bundle. The new pack includes a copy of Forza 3 and Bayonetta on top of all the usual trimmings that come with an Xbox 360 Elite -- all for a cool ¥29,800 ($319.48). It's one of the more unique software bundles we've seen, to tell the truth, but a nice way to entice Japanese gamers. Each title comes from an opposite side of the spectrum: Forza 3 is a diehard ra... (more)

The downloadable content brings the survivors from both games together in a match made in zombie killing harmony. New enemies and game modes are also introduced in the new content pack. Microsoft pretends that people are terrified of buttons

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 2707 days, 22 hours, 37 minutes ago
Thursday, April 22, 2010 7:32:21 PM GMT
That's how Microsoft believes you think. At least according Project Natal demagogue Marc Whitten, who believes that buttons are "locking" consumers out enjoying videogames. What a stroke of luck, then, that Project Natal is completely bereft of these confusing and distressing contraptions, eh? "If you counted the number of buttons in your living room, it would send a chill down your spine," said Whitten, with astounding melodrama. "A lot of people can play games amazingly well, but others feel locked out... (more)

And once again, Destructoid was there to bring you on-the-scene coverage. This year, for the first time in the history of the franchise, EA Sports teamed up with Doritos to let the fans choose the cover athlete, and they picked New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees over Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Reggie Wayne and Minnesota Vikings defensive end Jared A... Watch live baseball in HD on your PS3 with MLB.TV app

So, this is pretty damn awesome if you're a PS3-owning die-hard baseball fan. Today, Sony announced an MLB.TV app for the PS3. The application, which is native to the XMB once installed (unlike Netflix), will allow MLB.TV subscribers in the U.S. and Canada to extend their viewing experience from their computers to their couches. It's unprecedented for a game console, but hey -- the PS3 only does everything, right? (more)

Gundam Cafe Opens In Akihabara

There's no place more fitting for an official Gundam Cafe than in Tokyo's Akihabara district. Sadly Japanese maids don't draw hearts in syrup over your pancakes or put "love spells" on you like at Maid Cafes...but there are Gundam biscuits! Akihabara News visited the cafe before its grand opening to the public this Saturday, and has a full collection of photos over on their site. I do not recommend this 29-year old Japanese man look at the site though. It'd bring back too many memories (more)

Speeding Tickets Now Coming From Outer Space

As though cameras on top of every traffic light weren't bad enough already: there's now a trial run of satellites that will catch you speeding, over a several-block range, from hundreds of miles up. Hope for clouds, I guess? The SpeedSpike system is being tested at two locations in London, and works a little differently than your typical trap: cameras on the ground are assisted by satellites that are capable of calculating your average speed between two points. Which to me just means a lot of speeding, ... (more)
