Sony Aims To Create All-Encompassing Online Service Out Of PSN

posted by Alfonso CubiasAlfonso Cubias 2922 days, 51 minutes ago
Friday, November 20, 2009 6:54:27 AM GMT
Back in May, Sony talked about expanding the PlayStation Network to cover other hardware devices. Today the company further details these plans, leveraging the PSN infrastructure to create an online service for all Sony hardware. The PlayStation Network has been a big hit with PlayStation 3 and PSP owners, and now Sony wants to bring the same experience to other areas of hardware, including televisions, MP3 players, ebook readers, and laptops. According to a Sony presentation delivered this morning, the... (more)

Firefox headed to the PS3? Can life get any better? -- Engadget

posted by Alfonso CubiasAlfonso Cubias 2922 days, 55 minutes ago
Friday, November 20, 2009 6:49:57 AM GMT
Playstation Insider's got a tipster (one that's reportedly "very close" to the company) telling them that Sony is in heavy talks with Mozilla to port Firefox to the PS3. The tipster didn't know if any actual deal had been struck, but it's not terribly surprising considering the PS3's current built-in browser is less than awesome. That said, Firefox has actually crashed twice on us in the last 15 minutes, and no, we're not making that up. (more)

Editorial: Chrome OS is what I want, but not what I need

posted by Alfonso CubiasAlfonso Cubias 2922 days, 56 minutes ago
Friday, November 20, 2009 6:49:30 AM GMT
There's obviously something seriously wrong with me, since the idea of a feature-stripped OS that over-relies on a web browser at the expense of more powerful single-purpose apps has delightful shivers running up my spine. In fact, in a fleeting moment of ill-advised adulation, I was considering buying a netbook with solid state storage so that I'd be all prepped to hack this pre-release version of Chrome OS onto it and web-app to my heart's content. The real issue is that at the end of the day I know I'... (more)

Mac OS X 10.6.2 hacked to allow Atom support

posted by Alfonso CubiasAlfonso Cubias 2922 days, 56 minutes ago
Friday, November 20, 2009 6:48:52 AM GMT
No bonus points for calling this one, but it looks like Atom support has returned to Mac OS X 10.6.2 -- less than two weeks after it was unceremoniously removed to the dismay of hackintoshers. Of course, this new "fix" doesn't come courtesy of Apple, and it does take the art of hackintoshing to some risky new levels. Developed by a member of the InsanelyMac forum, the hack is actually a full-on replacement kernel for OS X, which means it will require a good bit of fine tuning to get installed, and some c... Sony's Blu-ray digital copies tested on PS3, PSP

posted by Alfonso CubiasAlfonso Cubias 2922 days, 57 minutes ago
Friday, November 20, 2009 6:48:13 AM GMT
We've seen digital copies of Blu-ray via separate DVDs before (e.g. Watchmen), and just recently Sony finally cut out of the middle disc and put the transferable video on the high-def disc itself. Joystiq recently showcased how it's done using a copy of Godzilla and a PlayStation 3. For this you'll need a PSN account and the 12-digit code included in the disc case. The standard definition video, here clocking in at 2GB, will copy to the hard drive (not a separate download, thankfully), and then if you wa... (more)

Dark Void film adaptation announced

Preemptively cutting off complaints that it strays too far from the source material, Capcom has announced a film adaptation of a game you haven't played yet: Dark Void, next year's promising third-person shooter from Airtight Games. In line with the agreement reached between Capcom, Reliance BIG Entertainment and Brad Pitt's Plan B Entertainment production company, Dark Void is primed as a "sci-fi action franchise and potential starring vehicle for Pitt."
