First Kinect in space is like the first dog in space but it has more use

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1760 days, 15 hours, 24 minutes ago

Engineers in Surrey are using Kinect technology in a pair of satellites, hoping to make them dock together, in orbit, using the peripheral's motion-sensing capabilities. Surrey Satellite Technology Limited's STRaND 2 satellites will use components of Kinect tech to scan their immediate surroundings and gather spatial awareness from all directions: They are planned to launch, separate and perform safety checks, and then dock with each other again. In space. (more)

Huawei has filed an EU antitrust complaint against InterDigital to end its "abuse" of the allegedly standards-essential patents it controls. The company has urged the commission to examine its demands, which are considered too hefty to come under the protection of FRAND terms. (more)

Samsung's 'human centric' Galaxy S III launches around the globe, says what delays?

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1760 days, 15 hours, 27 minutes ago
Tuesday, May 29, 2012 8:28:03 AM GMT
Despite carrier and retailer indications of delays for certain editions of Samsung's new Galaxy S III, the company triumphantly announced its launch right on schedule tonight. Of course, here in the US we're sadly on the outside looking in at the launch action going on in 28 countries as a new day dawns for the 29th, but at least there's rumblings that our localized editions aren't far off. In July, its world tour is expected to have swung through 145 countries and 296 carriers. (more)

Microsoft lands an official software outlet in Iraq

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1760 days, 15 hours, 27 minutes ago
Tuesday, May 29, 2012 8:27:37 AM GMT
Believe it or not, there hasn't been an official distributor for Microsoft software in Iraq in the near-decade since it's even been an option; if you wanted Windows or Office in the past several years, your choices were limited and seldom legal. Baghdad's Legend Lands is filling those big shoes through a deal with Microsoft that will see it provide both official copies, support, and other help for Iraqis that want to take the honest path. Stores across the country will take care of everything from large-... (more)

This may be the most awesome Kickstarter project we've ever seen. Engineered by MIT Media Lab students Jay Silver and Eric Rosenbaum, the MaKey Makey is a shockingly simple idea that is capable of turning almost anything into a keypad. According to the project page, any object that can conduct at least a tiny bit of electricity such as bananas, pencil lead, Play-Doh or water can be turned into a keypad. (more)

Considering that The Witcher 2 is available on GOG.com completely DRM-free, you’d think that pirating the on-disc version of The Witcher 2 would be shunned for the DRM-free download. (more)

Leap Peripheral May be the Future for Gesture Controls

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1760 days, 15 hours, 32 minutes ago
Tuesday, May 29, 2012 8:22:42 AM GMT
This is leap, a new motion sensor peripheral that works through gestures. While you may draw comparisons to the Kinect, the Kinect has nothing on Leap’s accuracy. The Kinect is able to detect full-body motion, but isn’t accurate enough to detect hand gestures. Leap, on the other hand, is able to detect gestures accurate down to 1/100ths of a millimeter within a four-foot area. Such sensitivity is required to read users’ most subtle finger gestures to allow daily computing without frustration. (more)

Apparent beta footage of Halo 4 leaked via a VHS tape

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1761 days, 15 hours, 55 minutes ago

NeoGAF has found a video on YouTube this morning from user Skid Kid, which shows him putting a VHS tape into a TV that is sitting on a hay bale while he blasts obnoxious music in the background. You really can't make this stuff up. The strangest part is that the video appears to be playing footage of Halo 4, which is appropriately grainy and hard to see for a VHS tape. At the very least, it's definitely not Halo 3 or Halo: Reach, so there's that. Microsoft had this to say to Kotaku about the video: (more)

As level designer Jonas Mattsson states, CD Projekt's aim in life is to create complex and wonderful RPGs. For them, there are two pillars to ensure this. One - to create a very interesting story. And two - give players choices that will have impactful consequences on every facet of the game in some way or form, whether it be the fate of a particular character no matter how big or small they are in regards to the central plot, the places you are able to visit and what will surround you when you get there... Groupon reportedly experimenting with Square competitor

Square, PayPal, Intuit, Verifone -- the mobile payments field (and we're not talking wallets here) is seriously crowded already. So, the question is then, why on Earth would Groupon want to join the fray? We're not entirely sure, but VentureBeat is reporting the coupon service is preparing to do just that. According to a source within the company, Groupon is testing card-reading dongle and payment platform with surprisingly aggressive pricing. (more)
