La-Mulana devs comment on cancellation, future plans

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1847 days, 19 hours, 34 minutes ago
Monday, May 07, 2012 6:43:11 AM GMT
The recent cancellation of La-Mulana for WiiWare for territories outside of Japan stirred up a bit of brouhaha, and it was a long time coming. First the game's release was put in question. Then the developers at Nigoro let us know that they didn't know what the hold up was. Shortly after that, the game's publishers announced its cancellation, and then the fans got upset. When fans get upset, conspiracy theories, finger pointing, and general grumpiness are sure to follow. (more)

Ragnarok Odyssey journeying to North American Vitas sometime this year

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1847 days, 19 hours, 43 minutes ago

In addition to bringing Orgarhythm stateside sometime before the end of this calendar year, XSEED has also announced equally nebulous plans to localize Ragnarok Odyssey for North American audiences and their Vitas. This follows the game's Japanese release last February, though how closely it'll follow remains to be seen. (more)

The Testament of Sherlock Holmes launch month confirmed, suspiciously

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1847 days, 19 hours, 44 minutes ago
Monday, May 07, 2012 6:33:42 AM GMT
The Testament of Sherlock Holmes is officially dropping in September for console and PC, Focus Home Interactive has announced. We can't be sure, but such a brazen release window announcement seems a little odd to us. Obviously a publisher wants its consumers to know when its game launches, but to just come out and say it like that... we think Focus Home is hiding something. Something sinister. Something only a genius detective could figure out. (more)

This Crysis 3 concept art is pretty, of course

OS X Lion update accidentally outs user passwords in plain text, stumbles over FileVault

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1847 days, 19 hours, 46 minutes ago
Monday, May 07, 2012 6:31:28 AM GMT
Are you an avid user of OS X's FileVault encryption and running a recently updated version of Lion? It may be time to consider changing your passwords. According to security researcher David Emry, users who used FileVault prior to upgrading to 10.7.3 may be able to find their password in a system-wide debug log file, stored in plain text outside of the encrypted area. This puts the password at risk of being read by other users or enterprising cyber criminals, Emry explains, and even opens the door for ne... (more)

FBI reportedly pressing for backdoor access to Facebook, Google

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1847 days, 19 hours, 47 minutes ago

Investigators at the FBI supposedly aren't happy that social networks like Facebook or Google+ don't have the same kind of facility for wiretaps that phones have had for decades. If claimed industry contacts for CNET are right, senior staff at the bureau have floated a proposed amendment to the 1994-era Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act (CALEA) that would require that (more)

Blue Origin dishes more details on its Bezos-backed spacecraft

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1847 days, 19 hours, 48 minutes ago
Monday, May 07, 2012 6:29:53 AM GMT
Blue Origin typically keeps pretty tight-lipped about its projects. The private space-travel firm claims it prefers to talk about what is has done, rather than what it hopes to do. As such, We recently heard about its "Space Vehicle" (that's its actual name,) having completed wind-tunnel testing, and now the firm (partly funded by Amazon's Jeff Bezos) has revealed a little more. The craft in question is a seven-seater, and it took 180 rigorous tests to get to the final design. (more)

Religious Sites Have More Trojans Than Naughty Ones

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1847 days, 19 hours, 51 minutes ago
Monday, May 07, 2012 6:26:48 AM GMT
Symantec reports that religious websites are more likely to infect computers with a virus than sites serving up naughty adult material. Why? Because the latter has likely invested money into securing their sites against hacks and infections. After all, it would be bad for business if a customer looking for adult material contracted a virtual disease before the virtual action even started. (more)

Minecraft Creator Notch Says EA is Destroying Gaming

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1847 days, 19 hours, 52 minutes ago

Mojang is the perfect definition of "indie." The studio came out of nowhere and produced a PC game that's become so popular, that it's help reinvigorate the stagnant platform. Minecraft is not only innovative, but it's extremely "lite" and can be enjoyed by gamers of all ages. Even more, it's a pure independent title, meaning there's no publisher involved to steer the game towards a more lucrative route. (more)

An IP Address Does Not Identify a Person, Rules Judge

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1847 days, 19 hours, 55 minutes ago

Another U.S. judge has ruled that an IP address does not identify copyright infringers, as the person paying for Internet access might not be the individual downloading illegally obtained content. The decision is one of many over the last year that are thwarting the plans of copyright holders who are looking for piracy-related financial gain in the American court system. (more)

Zynga already attempting to actively ruin Draw Something

Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) titles have seen an enormous surge in popularity in recent years, and for good reason, but to date they've been restricted to the PC. These highly skill-based, competitive games offer the joy of killing players and computer-controlled enemies, with that one-more-round addictive quality when it either goes well, or when you demand satisfaction after a loss. Written by Dan Houser and Sam Lake, "After The Fall" explains a bit of Max's childhood and some events that happened during the first two games. It's also beautifully drawn with a really nice use of color. The best part is it's absolutely free to read or download right now! (more)

Report: MLB 2K12 Perfect Game Million Dollar Challenge ends with accusations of cheating

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1849 days, 17 hours, 19 minutes ago

2K Sports' annual million dollar pitching challenge in its MLB 2K series had a bit of a change-up this year. Rather than awarding vast sums of cash to the first person to throw a perfect game in MLB 2K12, this year the competition introduced a new setup: a period of time where everyone could try to pitch a perfect game, and a complex algorithm judging the results and assigning scores. Taking a lower-rated pitcher against a great squad, for example, gives you more points. (more)
