Patent application highlights Apple's continued flirtation with haptic feedback

posted by Pedro CubiasPedro Cubias 1937 days, 5 hours, 52 minutes ago

We could all use a little feedback, right? Even Apple. The company has been toying around with the concept of haptic feedback for a while now, at least so far as patent applications are concerned. Another application filed in November or 2010 has surfaced. Of course, what we told you back in 2009 about the tenuous connection between an application and an actual product is as relevant as ever. Still, Apple's concept for a "tiered haptic system" which "may use one or more arrays of shape change elements to... (more)

Samsung Galaxy S III US sign-up page goes live

So enthused with the Galaxy S III that you want to know exactly when in the summer Americans can buy one? You can follow us, of course, but Samsung has you covered with a sign-up page that will take your vitals with promises that you'll "get the latest on the Next Galaxy." We wouldn't read too much into seeing AT&T, Sprint, Verizon and others in the list of carriers to choose from, though. Samsung has run identical sign-up campaigns in the US before, and it focused the initial Galaxy S II launch on t... (more)

The June issue of Game Informer will officially spill the beans on Bethesda's worst-kept secret - something that we told you about back in March - The Elder Scrolls Online. That's right: the studio's beloved franchise is moving into MMO territory, allowing gamers to wander across the entire land of Tamriel a thousand years before the events of Skyrim with other players. It will be a time of adventure, excitement, and certain doom as the daedric prince Molag Bal tries to pull all of Tamriel into his demon... (more)

When speaking about Major League Gaming, thoughts of "athlete" gamers battling each other for huge cash prizes while playing the likes of StarCraft 2, Halo: Reach, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and other competitive titles come to mind. The MLG professional Electronic sports organization itself adds the "pro" in pro gaming. It was founded by Sundance DiGiovanni and Mike Sepso back in 2002, and broadcasts its competitions across television, ESPN.com and other broadband sites like any other live sports ga... (more)

How Scientists Plan to Stop Nasty Side-Channel Attacks

Shafi Goldwasser at MIT and Guy Rothblum at Microsoft Research are proposing a technique that could alleviate the threat of such attacks, which often rely on an attacker being able to listen to the "noise" of computer processes. Side-channel attacks are frequently timing storage transactions and are measuring the power use of a systems to make conclusions of a system's activity and ultimately open a door to critical data. "It’s unfortunate that you don’t win any awards for most downloaded game," said senior creative director Rasmus Højengaard. "But yeah, obviously it’s something we’d like to address. Certainly people apparently really want to play our games, they just don’t wanna buy them. So we’ll do what we can, but whatever that’s gonna be is hard to say yet." (more)

With summer almost here, I'm sure die-hard football fans are already packing their coolers and mixing their magical sauces in preparation of pre-season football... which starts in late August. But before any real pigskins fly in the NFL, the true kickoff for football season starts with the annual release of Madden NFL, allowing armchair quarterbacks to test their might and wits against their chest-painted brethren as chunks of salsa fly in the midst of the action. Call of Duty: Black Ops II is a true sequel in every way

The worst kept secret in gaming lately is that Treyarch has been working on Call of Duty: Black Ops II. You knew it, I knew it, everyone knew it. That said, they've done a pretty good job of keeping the details of the game under wraps. And now that we've seen it, I'm betting that it's probably quite a bit different from what anyone was expecting. (more)

Since the departure of Tomonobu Itagaki back in 2008, Team Ninja has attempted to shake its reputation as nothing but a stylish, sex-crazed gore factory. It attempted to give Ninja Gaiden's Ryu Hayabusa a softer side, for one. Only two months ago, Team Ninja head Yosuke Hayashi said Dead or Alive 5 will rise beyond "sex and violence," instead pursing "a direction that contains emotional experiences that can move players." Choice in a video game is not a rare occurrence, unless that game happens to be Call of Duty. During the campaign in Black Ops 2, players will have the ability to select from a handful of 'Strike Force' missions anchored to hotspots throughout the globe. When one mission is selected, the others become unavailable, replaced later with fresh 'Strike Force' missions. (more)

Glassbox sets SimCity ablaze in latest trailer

In reality, fire is a mysterious force that takes what it pleases and threatens to devour us whole in our sleep. Within the confines of a video game, however, the flaming beast can be controlled. In EA Maxis' GlassBox engine powering the 2013 reboot of SimCity, it'll act as a danger to all around it – nearby structures will be in danger of catching fire and, without the aid of a local fire response station, eventually the whole town could burn down. If the Queen's Jubilee and 2012 Olympics pride have overcome your sense of subtlety, Microsoft has a special game console for you. The Celebration Pack Xbox 360 is a plain-jane 4GB Kinect bundle underneath, but it slathers the console, the wireless gamepad and the Kinect sensor in a tattered Union Jack to remind everyone you're not from Canada. Gamers also get copies of Kinect Adventures and Kinect Sports to help them train for the 500-meter relay. Showing your patriotism with an Xbox will cost you £250 ... (more)

Apple patents that moment when you text-bomb everyone with your new number

So, you've changed your phone number to escape that stalker (look, we're sorry, we just wanted to sell you a pyramid scheme), but how do you let all 104 of your remaining friends know without manually texting 'em? The answer lies in Apple's newly granted patent, which aims to end the tedium by having your device recognize when your number switches and automatically send an updated contact entry to everyone in your address book. Of course, there's nothing in the claims to say it's discriminatory, so now w... (more)

The term "smart home" seems to turn up in tech circles every so often, only to fade into the background again without much sign of ultra-connected dwellings becoming a reality. Honda's at least putting one foot forward, with a just-unveiled test house in Saitama, Japan featuring a system for controlling and monitoring energy usage. The Honda Smart Home System (HSHS) consists of thin-film solar cell panels, a rechargeable home battery unit, gas and hot water supply systems and the Smart e Mix Manager (more)

Owners of the Galaxy Nexus for Verizon Wireless are now joining the proud ranks of Android 4.0.4 users. As a common practice, it seems the rollout is gradual, and many of the devices receiving the update appear to be the property of corporate stores. Nonetheless, the 39.8MB download carries a build number IMM76K and similarly brings an update to the baseband software -- which is reason to hope that the (resolved) connectivity issues reported by Android 4.0.4 users of the HSPA+ and Sprint variants will be...
