Bethesda reports that gamers looking to attend QuakeCon 2012 this year can pre-register for the fragfest starting Wednesday, April 25. While general admission to QuakeCon remains free for all attendees, pre-registration means you'll get a premium package in return. It's a first-come first-serve basis however, so be sure to hover that finger on the mouse just moments before the pre-registration doors open at 7:00pm CST/ 8:00pm EST on http://registration.quakecon.org/. Games are growing up. There is a very real movement to mine greater emotional depth from interactive entertainment, to produce clever narratives and explore engaging themes. We're seeing games that strive for a level of maturity above simple guts and sexual gratuity, and while there's an incredibly long way to go, it's encouraging to see games that do speak to something more meaningful than what we're used to. Last generation, Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy and Second Sight had the ill luck to release at the same time, despite sharing an otherwise unique concept. Games involving psychic powers and telekinesis were few and far between last generation, yet a pair of them came out at once, and it was relatively tragic for both. (more)

The announcement of a Kirby 20th Anniversary collection for the Wii reminded us of one of our favorite little anecdotes from the early days of Nintendo's life in America. See, during the development of the first Kirby game, Hoshi no Kābī for the Game Boy, series creator Masahiro Sakurai and Shigeru Miyamoto had a disagreement. Despite the Game Boy's inability to display color, Sakurai saw Kirby as being pink, whereas Miyamoto envisioned a bright yellow Kirby. (more)
